Quick thoughts on a 71-65 win over Ohio State:

How it happened

Indiana built a 7-point lead in the first six minutes against Ohio State on Saturday night. Four different Hoosiers scored in IU's early 15-point spurt, and it looked like the momentum was on the home team's side. But Ohio State's Jamison Battle started connecting from the perimeter, which helped the Buckeyes turn things around quickly. At the 5:58 mark, Ohio State led 30-23 on a 3-pointer from Scotty Middleton, its largest lead of the half. The Hoosiers responded with a 14-8 run to end the half and get within one point at the break. Both teams were offensively efficient in the first 20 minutes, with Ohio State scoring 1.13 points per possession and Indiana 1.10. Indiana won the battle 24-10 in the first half and also scored 13 points off seven Ohio State turnovers.

After Ohio State scored the first eight points of the second half and forced Mike Woodson to call a timeout, Indiana responded with six consecutive points to get within three points at 46-43 with 16:14 left. The Hoosiers tied the game at 48 at 12:07 on a 3-pointer from Malik Reneau. Indiana regained the lead on a 3-pointer from Xavier Johnson with 9:50 to play, and a jumper from CJ Gunn made it 55-52, prompting an Ohio State timeout. The lead grew to five at 57-52 after a basket by Reneau with 7:46 left. A 3-pointer from Gunn extended the Hoosier lead to six, and a basket from Johnson gave Indiana an eight-point lead at 4:42.

After Indiana extended the lead to 10, Ohio State scored the next five points to make it 66-61. After Johnson shared two free throws, a layup from Felix Okpara made it 67:63. Okpara was fouled but missed the free throw and Ohio State got the rebound and a basket from Roddy Gayle Jr. to make it 67-65. Reneau answered with 1:15 to make it 69-65 Indiana. Gayle Jr. missed a layup on Ohio State's ensuing possession and IU called a timeout with 36.2 seconds left. With just over 23 seconds left, Mackenzie Mgbako turned the ball over, but Battle turned it over with 15.8 seconds left on Ohio State's next possession. Bruce Thornton fouled Johnson, who made the first free throw and missed the second but got the rebound. Johnson made one of two free throws in 11.8 seconds to seal the victory, Indiana's third in conference play.

Outstanding artist

Reneau led the way for Indiana, scoring 23 points on 10-for-16 shooting in 37 minutes. Johnson added 18 points in 34 minutes. He didn't commit a turnover. Gunn was outstanding off the bench, scoring 10 points in 24 minutes.

Statistics that stand out

Indiana turned 14 Ohio State turnovers into 22 points and outscored the Buckeyes 40-24 in the game. Ohio State dominated on the glass, grabbing 22 offensive rebounds and scoring 24 second-chance points.

The U with a rival for Cream Night

After being crowned Liga 1 2023 champions, Universitario de Deportes are sweating out the preseason to win the two-time national championship and have a great season in the Copa Libertadores.

“U” fans are looking forward to Noche Crema 2024, where Ate’s team will introduce its renewed squad led by Fabián Bustos. Although the club has not made an official statement, it has already defined the rival that the top team will face next Saturday, January 20, at the Monumental Stadium.

Universitario will face Coquimbo Unidos at the official 100th anniversary presentation of the student team. The Pirates just finished fifth in the Chilean league and will therefore compete in the Copa Sudamericana.

The Ate team will use this event to allow fans to enjoy the new arrivals in the recent transfer market. In recent weeks, the elite institution announced the arrival of Uruguayan goalkeeper Sebastián Britos, Argentine center forward Diego Dorregaray and national team striker Christopher Olivares.

The Ate colossus will have a full house and that is no wonder after the performance in November 2023, when the “U” was reunited with the national championship after 10 long years.

Likewise, it will be the first season for Fabián Bustos as coach of the current sovereign of Peruvian football, after Jorge Fossati took over the technical management of the Peruvian team.

“The 'U' already has a great history. It is the team with the most titles in Peruvian football and the largest participation in international tournaments. A team that was never relegated, I think. The only way to be part of history is to be a champion. We must not relax because we were champions, we must be hungrier and work with humility,” Bustos said.

After receiving its 27th star after defeating Alianza Lima in the final, Universitario de Deportes will fight to complete its 100th anniversary with the Liga 1 title in 2024. Likewise, the student team aims to qualify for the knockout round of the Copa Libertadores, in which they will play the group stage as Peru 1.

At the moment, the “U” is training tirelessly in Campo Mar to prepare physically and meet all the technical command requirements throughout the season. The top team has less than two weeks left to reunite with their fans.

The NFC team has reportedly ruled out a possible Bill Belichick candidacy – NESN

Will David Tepper hand someone a blank check?

by Gayle Troiani | 10 hours ago | 2 min reading

For most of the season, there has been speculation as to whether or not Bill Belichick will continue to coach the New England Patriots after the club's season finale against the New York Jets on Sunday.

The Carolina Panthers are reportedly out of the running for a future Hall of Fame coach, according to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.

Panthers owner David Tepper said he was looking for his next coach who would stay for 20 or 30 years after firing head coach Frank Reich in November. According to Breer, the unpredictable owner has set his sights on Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson for Carolina's vacancy.

Breer wrote that sources within the Panthers organization believe Tepper will give Johnson a blank check if he can get the OC out of Detroit. There appears to be some inconsistency, however, as Tepper is said to be looking to “check ten boxes” instead of just one in his next hire, according to Breer.

Johnson was pursued by the Panthers last season before ultimately turning them down to stay with Detroit. Considering how often Tepper fires his coaches, Johnson may want to pursue other opportunities even if he's offered a blank check.

Will the Pan American Games return to Lima? Last Wednesday, the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO), better known as Panama Sports, announced its decision to withdraw Barranquilla as the venue for the twentieth edition of the multi-sport event. With the Colombian city's departure from the organization, the position of hosting the competition became vacant in 2027, before Lima could be ready to host the Games again after its successful experience in 2019.

What does Lima need to host the 2027 Pan American Games?

The first step to consider the Peruvian capital is to officially present the candidacy. The Republic was able to learn that the Peruvian Olympic Committee (COP) was one of the Olympic committees to which Odepa sent a letter announcing the request to detach Barranquilla.

The deadline for Lima to present himself as a candidate is up to 48 hours after the start of the call for applications. This requires the support of the President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte, and the Mayor Rafael López Aliaga.

However, Peru would not be the only country interested in taking over the management of the Pan American Games. Mexico would also like to host the competition again. In addition, the Bolivian city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, which lost the election to Barranquilla, could also be considered.

Why was Barranquilla left without the Pan American Games?

In an official statement published through social networks, Panam Sports explained that the Colombian authorities had not complied with the payment of the corresponding payment for the rights of the Pan American Games organization within the established deadline. For this reason, it “adamantly” decided to withdraw the headquarters from Barranquilla.

“Barranquilla has requested an extension of the deadlines in order to be able to comply with the contract. In view of the zero response, the Executive Committee of Panam Sports has taken the unwavering decision to withdraw the contract after the new deadline of January 3, 2024. Right to be the host city of the continental event in 2027,” the statement said.
