Valérie Grenier wins again in Kranjska Gora!

Valérie Grenier enjoys Kranjska Gora! Almost exactly a year to the day after her first world success in the Slovenian ski resort, the Canadian did it again on Saturday by winning the giant slalom of this Alpine Ski World Cup.

On January 7, 2023, Grenier made skiing history by becoming the first Canadian in almost 50 years to win a huge World Cup on the slopes of Kranjska Gora.

A year after that first victory, the 27-year-old skier from Ottawa was once again the best in Slovenia on Saturday. Despite a big mistake, she was fourth at the end of the first round, flew through the second round followed by her coach and won ahead of the Swiss Lara Gut-Behrami, who was second with 37 hundredths, and the Italian Federica Brignone, who was down more than half one second.

The Canadian, still in the top 10 in the giant race this winter, took her second World Cup victory and her third podium.

“I'm at a loss for words again,” Grenier reacted after the race. I’m so happy and so proud, especially after that first round, which really annoyed me.”

Skiers continue tomorrow with a slalom in Kranjska Gora and travel to Austria next week for three speed competitions at Altermarkt.

3 keys to Cincinnati's upset of No. 12 BYU in both teams' first Big 12 game – Deseret News

Visiting Cincinnati pulled off an upset in its first Big 12 game, stunning No. 12 BYU 71-60 at the Marriott Center on Saturday night.

BYU led by as many as 10 points in both halves, but the Bearcats (1-0, 12-2) went on a 10-0 run midway through the second half to take a 57-51 lead, leaving the Cougars (0 -1). 1, 12-2) their first loss since December 16th.

Cincinnati overcame BYU's 13 3-pointers – on 46 attempts – by going 19 of 24 from the free throw line. The Cougars, who shoot fewer free throws than any team in the country, were just 5 of 10 from the charity stripe.

The announced attendance for BYU's Big 12 opener was 16,879.

Here are 3 keys to Cincinnati's away win:

• BYU's Trevin Knell made nine 3-pointers, second-most in school history, but everyone in blue and white went cold in the second half as the Bearcats heated up after a miserable first half.

After Richie Saunders made a layup and was fouled, the Cougars had nine consecutive empty possessions and Cincinnati went on a 10-0 run to take control.

In a battle of the two best rebounding teams in the country, Cincinnati grabbed 44 caroms compared to 37 for BYU.

• BYU had no one to stop the bleeding down the stretch and was unable to regain the lead after leading by as many as 10 points early in the second half. Jaxson Robinson, BYU's leading scorer, had five points on 2 of 7 shooting.

Of BYU's 30 shot attempts in the first half, 22 came from 3-point range and only eight came from inside. BYU had no interior presence while former Utah Valley star Aziz Bandaogo and Co. dominated Cincinnati's team.

• The Cougars came away with flying colors, leading by as many as 10 points in the first half as Cincinnati (28%) was even colder and more turnover-prone (13 in the first half).

The Bearcats had a losing streak of nearly seven and five minutes in the first half before improving a bit and only trailing 31-24 at halftime.

Conclusion: When the Cougars had a chance to put some distance between themselves and the visitors in the first half and early in the second half, they couldn't do it.

Viktor Lakhin led the Bearcats with 17 points.

A return to twelve attackers for CH: Five elements to consider against the Rangers

Emil Heineman will wear the Canadian uniform for the third time, but for the first time at the Bell Centre. When the New York Rangers visit, Martin St-Louis will return to a more traditional formation of twelve forwards and six defensemen.

• Also read: “It was a bit vintage Carey Price” – Devon Levi

The Journal offers five things to keep an eye on in this clash with the best team in the Eastern Association.

1 – Kovacevic in the stands

Johnathan Kovacevic will follow a third game this season via the press channel. Kovacevic had played the last three games in a formation with seven defenders. He only played 8:26 in the 6-1 loss to the Buffalo Sabres.

Once again, Jayden Struble maintained his spot in the top six on the blue line.

2 – Montembeault in front of the net

Jake Allen against the Sabres, Samuel Montembeault against the Rangers. In 2024, the rotation will continue as in 2023 with the Habs goaltenders.

Jonathan Quick will be the starting goalie in Rangers camp. In his first season with the Blue Shirts, Quick found the fountain of youth with a 9-2-1 record, a 2.41 GAA and a .917 save percentage.

3 – Harvey-Pinard in training

Martin St-Louis entrusted his players to optional training on Saturday morning. Rafaël Harvey-Pinard was among the players present. As a sign of his return to the game in the coming days, he wore a red sweater of the same color as several of his teammates.

Harvey-Pinard has not played since November 14th due to a lower body injury.

4 – The Panarin Threat

There is nothing new with Artemi Panarin. He still remains one of the most dangerous wingers in the NHL. Panarin leads the Rangers with 53 points (24 goals, 29 assists) in 37 games. Mika Zibanejad follows him in this category, but remains quite far behind with 38 points.

5 – The Trouba Train

St. Louis has described the Rangers as one of the NHL's best teams due to their dominance on special teams. They rank 2nd in numerical superiority (30.4%) and 7th in numerical penalty (84.1%). But that's not the only thing that makes the Rangers an impressive team.

In terms of toughness, they have one of the most physical defenders in Jacob Trouba. The New York captain has already distributed 87 hits.

“When you play like a player like him, you have to say something about it,” St-Louis said. The same applies when facing Gudas (Radko). »

January 6, 2024, 11:33 p.m. ET

INDIANAPOLIS – Two teams that combined for seven wins last season proved how far ahead of schedule their rebuilds are by playing for a playoff spot on Saturday night, and the Houston Texans didn't have to settle for a moral victory to be satisfied.

A fourth down with 1:03 remaining secured a 23-19 victory over the Indianapolis Colts as Houston advances to the playoffs. The Texans will become AFC South champions if the Jacksonville Jaguars lose at the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

It capped a great regular season for rookie quarterback CJ Stroud and first-year head coach DeMeco Ryans, but it also showed that the Colts are on the right track under first-year head coach Shane Steichen.

CJ Stroud Texans can beat Colts and clinch playoff spot

Houston Texans

In training camp, the Texans said they would shock the world, and qualifying for the playoffs in Ryans' first year as coach confirmed that prediction.

Stroud's demeanor belied his inexperience as he played his first prime-time NFL game in a win-or-go-home situation.

The rookie engineered a 12-play, 73-yard scoring drive in the fourth quarter to give the Texans the lead for good. He was 7 of 7 for 82 yards on the drive

This means the Texans will reach the playoffs for the first time since 2019. This was Stroud and Ryans' first season together and they claimed ten wins in the regular season, following three last season.

QB collapse: Stroud showed why he is the favorite to win Offensive Rookie of the Year. The first play of Houston's first drive was Stroud's 59-yard pass to Nico Collins for a 75-yard touchdown, and Stroud continued the day's effective throw for 264 yards and two touchdowns. He surpassed 4,000 yards passing, becoming the fifth rookie in NFL history to reach the milestone.

Describe the Texans game in two words: Nico Collins. The Texans were without their Nos. 2, 3 and 4 receivers and needed Collins to lead the passing game. He finished the game with nine catches for 195 yards (Houston had 264 total) and a touchdown. Collins finished the game with the highest percentage of receiving yards (74%) in a game in Texans history (with at least 200 passing yards).

Key game: The Colts faced a fourth-and-1 from the Texans' 15 with 1:06 to play. Instead of running back Jonathan Taylor, who was out early in the game with heel and ankle problems, Gardner Minshew threw to running back Tyler Goodson, but Goodson dropped him, sealing the result. — DJ Bien Aime

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts came out of this game knowing they were ahead of schedule in their restart last season and were on track to take another step in 2024.

That they played a meaningful game in Week 18 says a lot about how far they are from a four-win season. However, on Saturday evening it became clear that there is still more work ahead of them. The lack of depth in the secondary has been exposed. The wide receivers and tight ends had minimal impact and the tackling was poor.

But the Colts and Steichen should be a team to be reckoned with even after a disappointing loss.

Biggest gap in the game plan: Defensively, the Colts made some potential misjudgments. They arguably waited too long to mix things up, like the timely blitz defensive coordinator Gus Bradley called on safety/linebacker Ronnie Harrison Jr. in the fourth quarter, leading to a sack by Stroud. When Stroud is comfortable in the pocket, problems tend to arise for defenses.

Decisive game: Stroud hit Collins for a 75-yard touchdown on the Texans' first play from scrimmage, a play that exposed the Colts' major problems in the secondary. Injury-related personnel changes have eroded depth, and the lack of safety help (there were two safeties deep on the play) for rookie cornerback JuJu Brents on the deep ball suggested someone blew a coverage.

Stunning next-gen stats: The Colts managed 167 of their 227 rushing yards before contact, an average of 4.5 yards before contact on each rush. That performance came against a Houston defense that allowed an average of 1.6 yards before contact per rush this season, the best mark in the NFL. Taylor delivered the second-best performance of his career with 188 rushing yards. –Stephen Holder
