Phillies Sign Craig Kimbrel, According to Reports – NBC Sports

Just when it seemed like the Phillies’ heavy lifting for the offseason was done, they struck one more big deal just before Christmas.

They inked a one-year, $10 million deal with free-agent Relief Craig Kimbrel ESPN. The deal was first reported by The Athletic. It’s the same contract the Phillies signed Corey Knebel for last offseason.

Kimbrel was the top arm left in a thinning class of free-agent removers. He’s coming off an up-and-down season with the Dodgers in which he saved 22 games with a 3.75 ERA but lost his job late in the year and has fewer at-bats with a lower strikeout rate than ever in his big league missed career.

Kimbrel has alternated dominant seasons with underperforming seasons every year since 2018. The common thread through his bad years was a lack of control. His four worst years — 2016, 2019, 2020 and 2022 — were the four seasons he struggled with the most restrictive walks.

But when he’s on, he’s proven to be one of baseball’s finest and most overwhelming assists. He is a potential future Hall of Famer with 394 career saves, a 2.31 ERA, .99 WHIP and 410 more strikeouts than innings. He’s also appeared in 23 playoff games with four different teams – the Braves, Red Sox, Cubs and White Sox. He won a ring with the Red Sox in 2018 and saved six games during their playoff run.

This is the second time Dave Dombrowski has landed Kimbrel. He was the Red Sox’s president of baseball operations when they traded four prospects, including Manuel Margot, to San Diego for Kimbrel in November 2015, just three months after he was hired. Dombrowski, of course, was in charge as Boston won it all in 2018 before being sacked the following September.

The Phillies needed another high-leverage bullpen arm and got one with Kimbrel. Now they hope they get the good Kimbrel. He joins Seranthony Dominguez and Jose Alvarado on the back end of the bullpen. Matt Strahm, Connor Brogdon and Andrew Bellatti are also in line for high profile work.

Other bullpen candidates for opening day include Sam Coonrod, Nick Nelson and prospects Andrew Baker and Francisco Morales. The Phillies could also have Bailey Falter and/or Cristopher Sanchez swingman.

The big question will be who will close for the Phillies. Dominguez has done well in the role in 2022, but Kimbrel could end up getting the first chance because he’s spent 11½ of the last 12 seasons as a closer and the half season he’s spent as a setup with the White Sox, went very badly. There’s a lot to sort out in the months before Rob Thomson has to make his first late bullpen decisions in a regular-season game.

The Phils signed left-hander Strahm to a two-year, $15 million contract earlier this offseason. They signed Trea Turner to play shortstop, Taijuan Walker as a mid-rotation starter, and Strahm and Kimbrel to make key outs late in the games. There’s no more glaring hole in this roster, but teams could always use more pitching depth, and we could see the Phils make some minor moves in the new year.

From a luxury tax perspective, the Kimbrel deal will take the Phillies to about $251 million, the largest payroll in team history. The first luxury tax threshold in 2023 is $233 million, and the Phils would pay a 30% tax on every dollar spent over $233 million, though teams’ tax penalties aren’t calculated until the end of the season.

Only the Mets ($392 million) and Yankees ($291 million) have higher estimated payrolls than the Phillies during the vacation.

Gang’s All Here Podcast: The Jets’ playoff hopes look dashed, and Zach Wilson feat. Gary Vee

Zach Wilson Nypost Jet's Podcast

The Zach Wilson era is over.

Point blank, point. There’s no way you can send him back to the QB in a Jets uniform. He’s never looked close to an NFL QB. He needs a reset and it has to be with another team. It’s unfortunate it had to end like this in just two short seasons, but this Jets team has too much talent for one project. The quarterback position is the most important in the sport, and the Jets need someone competent to take the reins and help lead this team to the playoffs next season.

This season’s playoffs are now looking like a dream after Thursday night’s 19-3 loss to the Jaguars. What a pathetic effort across the board. In response to the loss and brutal turn of what was once Season 7-4, we bring you a new episode of the Gang’s All Here podcast starring Brian Costello and me. Rabid Jets fan and entrepreneur Gary Vee (who hopes to one day own the Jets) joined me on the show.

Gang’s All Here Podcast with Jake Brown & Brian Costello:

ZACH WILSON ERA OVER: Thursday night was the last straw. Nothing was good. The offensive line was in ruins. The defense didn’t do enough. Outside of forced fumbling by Quinnen Williams, they haven’t made any turnovers. The coaching wasn’t good. But we can’t continue to apologize for Wilson not having played NFL football. He needs a reset with another team. The Jets have shiny plays but a huge hole at QB and need to address it this offseason.

SALEH’S TRAINING: Brutal job not moving to Chris Streveler or even Joe Flacco at halftime at QB. It was too little, too late, to give Wilson two more drives in the third quarter. The offense was lifeless and that’s a bad job by Saleh. He was also protective of Zach after the game, claiming he’s gotten better since coming back from his bench, which is nowhere near the truth. He was terrible.

PLAYOFF HOPES: From planning a playoff game to 7-8 and a pipe dream. They have to hope that Mike White is ready for the Jets game in Seattle and that he leads them to wins there and in Miami. Then they need the Dolphins to lose to either the Packers or the Patriots. If they beat the Packers and then lose to the Patriots, the Patriots would have to lose to the Bengals and Bills. They also need the Jaguars to lose one of their last two games. my brain hurts

Gary Vee Interview:
Rabid Jets fan, entrepreneur

  • Rough twist: Strange feeling knowing the Jets probably won’t make the playoffs and those last two games probably won’t matter. The hope for this team was that at least every game counted.
  • ZACH’S FUTURE: Odd preference that he hopes Zach will at least come back as a backup. You won’t get much of anything for him in one trade right now. Would race with Mike White next season but needs to see contracts.
  • FUTURE OWNER: The goal is to one day own the Jets. The first step, if it were today, would be for Robert Saleh and Joe Douglas to do long-term deals. Would like to at least move the Jets to their own stadium and NY would be great. Hates the bills and giants. Jets must be in their own seat.
  • JETS FUTURE: There are many bright pieces in this team. It’s hard to talk about today, but this team has had a lot of key injuries to contend with. Douglas blew it out of the park with these rookies in the draft. With the right QB, the Jets could be very good next season and move forward.

What are the next steps for Luke Fickell and the Badgers? – Bucky’s 5th quarter

The early day of the signing is over, and new head coach Luke Fickell hasn’t failed to impress in his first effort with the Wisconsin Badgers.

Overall, Wisconsin added 20 total players in the current cycle: 14 via scholarships, four walk-ons and two transfers.

Fickell and his staff were able to maintain several stipends from the previous regime while adding several key figures in key positions, including four-star defenders Amare Snowden and Braedyn Moore, and full-back Trech Kekuhana, who tipped over in the 11th hour from Arizona after a virtual meeting with Fickell.

What are the next steps for Fickell and the Badgers after day one of signing is over?

offensive line

In his Wednesday press conference on the day of the national signing, Luke Fickell admitted he wanted to add additional bodies in offensive line space, having only signed one grantee, James Durand, so far.

As for why Fickell wasn’t drawn to adding more pieces, the head coach emphasized the importance of not rushing the process and instead conducting a thorough assessment to find the best seats for Wisconsin.

A potential name to keep an eye on? OL Joe Crocker who was recently released from the state of Mississippi.

Crocker was a target of the previous staff, who initially suspended a verbal commitment from offensive lineman Christopher Terek, but had no choice after the latter rescinded his commitment following the coaching change.

Crocker has visited Wisconsin on numerous occasions before, and Fickell has stressed the importance of getting players used to the program and commended the efforts the previous regime made in finding these recruits.

wide receiver

A secondary offensive position that Fickell could target? wide receiver.

Despite recovering Markus Allen after entering the transfer portal and flipping Trech Kekuhana, Fickell was still able to add bodies to the position group.

Currently, the Badgers are one of the teams in the mix with Chicago wide receiver Malik Elzy planning to make his decision at the All-American Bowl in January.

It will be interesting to see if Fickell sticks with his current set of receivers or wants to add another player as Wisconsin’s top three wideouts all return in 2023.

line of defense

The defensive line was one of the weaker areas of Wisconsin’s recruit class, as the Badgers failed to land a single grantee in the early signing phase.

Wisconsin originally had signings of Roderick Pierce and Jamel Howard among previous staffers, but both were released after the coaching change and the former has already signed for Michigan.

The Badgers are still in the mix for Howard, who is expected to make his decision on day two of the signing, but Fickell said the team will look to add players in the position in the next recruitment cycle.

Fickell also argued why there were no signers for the offensive line: The coaching staff did not want to rush decisions and sign players who were not necessarily the best for the program.

However, Wisconsin landed defensive end Manny Mullens, brother of Badgers defensive end Isaiah Mullens, and two walk-on defensive ends, adding some depth to the program.

While Fickell has remained adamant in his advocacy of building through high school recruits as opposed to the transfer portal, don’t rule out the latter option in the short term.

For each of the above positions, Fickell said the team could add a younger body via the transfer portal and acknowledged the need for a proper fit with the program.

Given the excitement built in the early weeks of the Fickell era, it will be fascinating to see the new Wisconsin head coach round out the roster and his coaching staff in the coming weeks.

CHRISTMAS 2027

CHRISTMAS 2027

Undoubtedly, to have a successful team that is strategically well constructed and fascinating to watch first requires two great allies: the leaders of the club and the supporters behind those leaders, united in what we should call a plan. In other words, a minimum plan for five years.

It’s the first time in my life, and it’s been a long time, that I’ve seen Canadians leave from such a distance, out of such a trough, towards a clearly stated reconstruction, and it’s a first, indeed well received by his followers, his disciples. Now there is one more crucial ingredient to add to the recipe called “patience”.

A five-year run means this high-profile team won’t be released until 2027 at the earliest, until then, the main thing is to avoid the trap Montreal has so often fallen into, becoming the graveyard of the players it’s meant to be. to finish her career in blue.-White Red. Linden, Gilmour, Brière, Bonk, Samsonov, Gomez, Smolinski, Lang and even Gionta or Audette were illusions. They had done their best elsewhere. Don’t do it again.

REJOICE ANYWAY

Before you sign a contract with a big-name player, you must first determine how old he will be in 2027 and where his career will go. Then, when that athlete reaches his demise, all he has to do is act as bait for an attractive draft pick in a potential trade. Otherwise it’s not worth it. We build with new wood.

Evolve and most importantly, be far-sighted, adapt quickly, and anticipate what hockey will be like in the years to come of the NHL. Rejoice when they win, but rejoice even more in the next two or three seasons when they finish last and move in first. The youngsters who are already on the team go to school and learn to stick together, never give up, be respected and ultimately win. Whoever comes into the team, into this new culture, will have to let themselves be carried away by this current that one sees in Colorado, in Tampa, in Boston.

It will be necessary to cleverly and tactically get rid of overpaid passengers and replace them with soldiers, real warriors with fresh meat. It is good to see that those who buy tickets or pay sponsorships are forgiving about the construction time and the development of the kids. After just 6 months, Canadians have gone further than I thought. The testament is installed, showing it both on the ice and on the upper floors. Now you have to play the right cards and if some of them were from here, that would be wonderful.

Are you looking forward to 2027?

From the enclave

  • The mayor of Saint-Michel-des-Saints, rejean gouin, is proud of its statutes adopted in 2018. Did you know that ATV and snowmobile traffic is allowed on the streets of its very touristy community?
  • The treatment reserved for Mario Cecchini by the owners of the Alouettes is unacceptable. The title that Marc de Foy used yesterday in this file sums it all up in two words: “What a mess! »
  • The defender Matthew Samuelsson of the Sabers is the son of Kjell, who played in the NHL for fifteen years. Father was 6′ and 6 while son is 6′ and 3.
  • To the fishermen on the ice. Note that you must have your driver’s license and also a photo card proving the veracity of your identity. And beware, beware, beware… It’s still very early and very thin in the season.
  • Dany Dube (98.5) was once the MP’s instructor for Marquette, Enrico Ciccone, 1990 with the Draveurs de Trois-Rivières.
  • I haven’t checked, but the Canadian would have won the Stanley Cup more times on the Boston Bruins’ ice than the Bruins themselves.
  • congratulations to Patrice Forcer who will be the new General Manager of the magnificent Pinegrove Golf Club in Saint-Luc. Brilliant purchase.
  • Kaiden Guhle has a brother, Brendan. He was drafted in the second round by Buffalo in 2015. He only played three games with the Sabers and has just announced his retirement at the age of just 25.

  • Brody Sutter is the son of Duane and nephew of the other five Sutters. He wanted to be a referee in the NHL, but it didn’t work out. He was drafted by Carolina in 2011.

  • It was funny hearing the voice Michael Lacroix last Saturday at the TD Garden in Boston. Recorded in Montreal, presents Michel Lacroix Patrice Bergeron in French then celebrated for his 1000 points. The governor of Massachusetts charlie baker, has also declared December 17 as Patrice Bergeron Day in his state.
  • When Gary Bettman became commissioner of the NHL? That same year, Canadians won their last Stanley Cup…in 1993.
  • On January 14th, the Center Francine Gadbois (Boucherville) hosts the VIP evening of the Hunting-Peach Film Tour. Over $8,000 in prize money this season opener in 2023.
  • Valleyfield mourns the death of Michele Choiniere (Canadian Tire), such a wonderful and generous philanthropist who has helped and supported the sports world in his area. Damn cancer!
  • It still is Wayne Gretzky who dominates for the number of goals scored in an empty net with 85. They are followed by Crosby (68), Blake Wheeler (67), Ovechkin (66) and Hossa (60).
  • The highest paid coach in the NHL would be Todd McLellan (Los Angeles) at 5 million per year. Martin St-Louis would be at 3 million.
  • Pascal Dupus is not only an assistant coach of the Shawinigan Cataractes, but also one of the shareholders of the team in which he played himself.

“Albiceleste” on the march to Qatar 2022

Albiceleste on the march to Qatar 2022

Being crowned the best squad in the world in Qatar 2022 has side benefits for the Argentina team. The treasury of AFA, which will raise $52 million, plus prizes from FIFA and Conmebol, as well as the clubs for which the 26 champions play. The most visible and surprising case is that of Enzo Fernandez as the maximum exponent after a growth of 1,000 percent.

The specialized side transfer market compiled the data on how much the prices of “Albiceleste” players have increased, without taking into account the clauses that the clubs have imposed on them. The award assigned relates to aspects such as their performance, age and projection, purely sporting aspects.

There, the first information that comes to light is the enormous growth of Enzo Fernández. The winner of the World Cup Young Player award started out as a substitute but quickly became the king and queen of Argentina’s midfield. River will be rubbing his hands after the Enzo World Cup. Sold in mid-2022 for 10 million euros plus another eight in variables (the conditions of an additional two million have already been met), Núñez’s men kept 25% of the passport. Today he would collect 30 million euros for his passport share. Yes, almost triple what it received when it was sold in 2022.

Alexis MacAllisterThe substitute who came on during the World Cup also increased his price from 10 million euros to 32 million (220 percent). Lisandro Martinez, for his part, went from 25 to 50 million (100 percent), while Julián Álvarez went from 20 to 50 million (150 percent). The latter belongs to Manchester City and his coach, Spain’s Pep Guardiola, has already said he’s priceless: he considers him a diamond in the rough that he’s been honing game after game since joining from River less than half a year ago.

Lionel Messi scored 2 goals in the final of the World Cup in Qatar 2022. Photo: composition LR/AFP

¿Y Lionel Messi?

The pass of a 35-year-old player like the ‘For money” is worth much less than, for example, that of Kylian Mbappé. The 11-year difference (the Frenchman has just turned 24) means the French forward has a much higher resale value than the Argentine despite being considered the best player in the world.

His deal at the Parisian club has just a few months left as the deal signed in 2021 expires at the end of June next year. Technically, from the first day of 2023, the man from Rosario can sit down and negotiate with anyone who wants him. That is, until his current club doesn’t agree with him using the optional year included in the deal signed last year.

For now, according to Transfermarkt, Messi’s market value is around €50m under these conditions. The Argentina captain quotes less than his teammates Lautaro Martinez (75 million) and Cristian Romero (55 million) and Lisandro Martínez. Beyond what the market is saying or projecting, one thing is clear: for the Argentine public (and even for Barcelona or PSG), the Rosario player is priceless.

To this great group of players we must add their technical command. Before and during the qualifier nobody trusted Lionel Scaloni, today they want him for life in the ‘Albiceleste‘.

How much is the best goalkeeper of the World Cup worth?

That Dibu Martinez began to be closely followed by several giants of the European continent. And the truth is that the chances of him changing sides are high as he intends to see action as part of the UEFA Champions League.

Martínez, 30 years old, has a market value of 25 million euros. Has an ongoing contract with AstonVilla until 2027.

The payment

$10 million is Di María’s current price.

The t-shirt will go on sale on December 26th Argentina with 3 stars.

The ‘Albiceleste’ is number 2 in the FIFA rankings.

How many World Cups would Peru have played in with

In 2018 the Peruvian team ended a long 36-year streak without qualifying for a World Cup after finishing fifth in the Conmebol qualifiers and winning the playoffs for the World Cup in Russia. Although the Bicolor could not repeat the success in the process towards Qatar 2022, it could benefit for the 2026 edition and the following ones, since FIFA has increased the number of quotas managed by the South American Confederation.

This increase in places for all continental member federations (Conmebol, UEFA, Concacaf, CAF, AFC and OFC) is a consequence of the overall increase in the number of teams participating (from 32 to 48) in the group stage of the World Cup, which within four years of Mexico , the United States and Canada.

In order to meet this quota, the new distribution (including playoffs) was determined as follows: Europe (16 places), Africa (9.5 places), Asia (8.5 places), Central and North America (6.5 places) , Oceania (1 place) and South America (6.5 places).

With a 6.5 slot format, Peru would have qualified directly for Qatar 2022 and would not have had to play the playoffs. Photo: EFE

This last zone will benefit the most since each country that integrates it has a 60% chance of getting a direct ticket (if it bottom six finishes top of the table) and another 10% chance of at least entering the repechage (if it is in seventh place).

How many World Cups would Peru have qualified for?

Until the mid-1990s, the South American qualifiers were played in groups of three, four, or five teams (depending on the number of participants). This changed after the trial towards France in 1998, when the all-against-all system began.

Since then, the Peruvian team has ranked as follows: France 1998 (5th), Korea-Japan 2002 (8th), Germany 2006 (9th), South Africa 2010 (10th), Brazil 2014 (7th), Russia 2018 (5th). ) and Qatar 2022 (5th). Only three times could the Blanquirroja land over box seven and once did he reach that position.

In other words, if the round-robin qualifiers had been played with 6.5 spots available from the start, Peru could have achieved two more World Cups for a total of seven appearances in the tournament, in addition to an additional playoff appearance.
