Michigan offers Coastal Carolina transfer portal edge to Josaiah Stewart

As announced on his Twitter account Tuesday night, the Michigan Wolverines sent an offer to Josaiah Stewart, a former Coastal Carolina Edge, who entered the transfer portal the same day Michigan offered him.

The 6-foot-2, 230-pounder hails from New York but played high school football in Massachusetts at Everett High School, Mike Sainristil’s former high school. The Wolverines offered Stewart back when he was a three-star recruit graduating from high school in the class of 2021. Don Brown was hot on his heels at the time, but Michigan eventually cooled him off for other prospects.

A true freshman last season, Stewart played in all 13 games for the Chanticleers. In those 13 games, he accumulated 43 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks (a Coastal Carolina school record) and three forced fumbles. One of his best efforts came against a Power 5 school – Kansas – where he had eight tackles, 3.5 tackles for losses and 3.5 sacks.

Thanks to his efforts as a freshman, he was named a True Freshman All-American by the FWAA, The Athletic, ESPN and 247Sports. He was also named to the All Sun Belt First Team and the All True Freshman Team by PFF.

In 12 games last season, Stewart compiled 36 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, a pass deflection and a forced fumble.

Stewart is listed on his profile on Coastal Carolina’s website as a “bandit,” who is essentially a hybrid linebacker who mostly rushes the passer. Think Josh Uche or David Ojabo for Stewart’s potential defense in Michigan.

This is a solid offering from Mike Elston, Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines. Mike Morris could potentially move to the NFL after this season, and while guys like Taylor Upshaw and Julius Welschof technically have a year left to play due to COVID, there’s no guarantee they’ll return.

So far, Michigan is the only school offering Stewart. It probably won’t be the last offer he gets. Stay tuned for more news on this setting and many more on the portal.

The three pillars of snowmobiling in Quebec

The three pillars of snowmobiling in Quebec

“The entire Québec snowmobile industry, or more specifically the structured snowmobiling run by the clubs and the Fédération des Clubs de Motoneigistes du Québec, is based on three pillars,” explained Michel Garneau, the federation’s chief communications officer.

“The first is that of the user/payer. Snowmobilers pay to build and maintain trails. This is quite a unique group in the world of recreational tourism. The second pillar is the generosity of landowners. More than 50% of the hiking trails are on private property. Landowner participation is a crucial element for the industry. Finally, the third pillar is the contribution of volunteers. The true managers of the trail network are the volunteers. They negotiate rights of way, cut branches, renew bridge decks, install signs, take care of the maintenance of machines and paths. They are the key element because without them there would be no snowmobile industry in Quebec as we know it today. »

TRAILS USEFUL FOR MANY

Some people openly criticize people who drive snowmobiles. What they don’t know is that hiking trails are also used for other types of activities.

“The snowmobile community often acts as a project manager for infrastructure that is used for other recreational activities,” explains the expert. In 2010, the National Coalition on Trails, a pan-Canadian organization, conducted a study that concluded that 42.1% of all recreational trails in Quebec benefit from snowmobile community management. In Canada, that number rises to 66.4%. »

Photo provided by Dominique Gobeil

It is well known that trails and bridges that are used for snowmobiling in winter are also used for other activities in summer and fall such as hiking, biking, horseback riding and more.

“Often when you browse, you find that these projects were initiated or funded by the snowmobile community. We must therefore remember that while we are motorsport enthusiasts, we are trail developers first and foremost. We can be proud that we are creating pathways and that other groups are benefiting from our momentum and investments,” adds Mr. Garneau.

For this specialist, a simple check would prove what he says.

“If people went out and did a little inventory in their part of the country, they would quickly see many of the investments and projects being pushed by the snowmobile community. They could then understand that we contribute to their quality of life because they now have access to many outdoor activities through the hiking trails. »

FINANCING

When snowmobilers buy their license plates each season, a portion of the amount goes back to them to fund the activities.

“The government is raising funds from registration fees through the SAAQ. These amounts are reallocated to operational and infrastructure costs. There is $35 that goes to the association and is allocated to very specific programs for the clubs. There is an amount of $4 that is used to fund the infrastructure. »

Michel Garneau gives the example of the new pedestrian bridge over the Péribonka river in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean.

“Some of the funding is being provided by snowmobilers and quad bikers. Finally, $1 is used for investment projects related to fauna and flora, a program managed by the Fondation de la faune du Québec. So the whole $40 goes into government hands, but it comes from the snowmobilers. »

Another important source of funding for clubs is the sale of access rights.

“Some snowmobilers believe that what they pay goes back into the association’s pockets. I invite you to consult the Amount Distribution table where you will see that only $16 goes to the Federation as working capital. Most of the price paid for the right of access is reallocated to the development and maintenance of the trails. »

Before ending his interview, Mr. Garneau highlighted a fact that illustrates very well the commitment of volunteers, such as the Pionniers des Laurentides Club, which has just celebrated its 60th anniversary.

“It’s a great example of volunteer work. We’re talking about a volunteer-run NPO that has managed to survive through the centuries to continue to promote snowmobiling among its members and community today. It’s quite an achievement. »

New Mexico State’s Mike Peake has been suspended after fatal shooting as new details emerged

New Mexico State players and assistant coaches were helping teammate Mike Peake after a deadly shooting last month at the University of New Mexico, according to new reports from the Albuquerque Journal and KOAT-TV.

Peake was “lured” to the New Mexico campus by four Lobos students in Albuquerque the night before the two teams were due to play last month. The students, police say, wanted to “attack” Peake at a dorm, part of a revenge plot that stemmed from an altercation at a soccer game between the two schools in October.

According to the Journal, Peake arrived at a dormitory around 3 a.m. on November 19 and was confronted by three men. One of them, 19-year-old Brandon Travis, allegedly shot Peake in the leg. Peake then reportedly fired back with his own gun and punched Travis four times, killing him.

A 17-year-old girl was arrested for her role in the incident. Another man, 19-year-old Jonathan Smith, was also charged.

The basketball game was then canceled.

After the shooting, Peake reportedly met with three of his teammates on the New Mexico campus and placed his gun and a tablet in the trunk of their car. The teammates then drove off, according to the report, and called both assistant coach Dominique Taylor and head coach Greg Heiar.

The basketball team then left town, but Taylor stayed behind at the hotel where the team was staying. At around 3:45 p.m., more than 12 hours after the reported shooting, Taylor turned the gun over to police.

The team bus left the hotel at around 11:30 am after the game was called off. An officer chased the bus down the interstate and stopped it in an apparent attempt to locate the items Peake had reportedly placed in the trunk of his teammates’ car. The police obtained his tablet in a backpack.

The three teammates, Issa Muhammad, Marchelus Avery and Anthony Roy, all played in Monday night’s New Mexico State game. Roy did not travel with the team to California Tuesday ahead of their game in Santa Clara on Wednesday due to “personal reasons.”

The story goes on

None of those players, coaches or Peake have been charged in the incident. Peake was described as a victim in the initial report.

The university has since planned to hire an independent investigator to review the incident.

“We will be incredibly transparent during this process,” New Mexico State Chancellor Dan Arvizu said in a statement. “We owe that to our community and everyone associated with our university. The selected firm is encouraged to review public documents relating to this case and has full authority to speak to any NMSU employee, student or other person as necessary to ensure that we fully understand the facts.

“If we should have done something differently, this report will let us know. In the last day we received a number of new questions about this case. Unfortunately, some of the information reported in the media has not been made available to NMSU. In order to do justice to everyone involved, it is important to have a more accurate understanding of what happened.”

Peake was suspended indefinitely by the team on Monday. The 21-year-old joined the program before last season. Sports director Mario Moccia could not comment on his status as a student at the school.

“Mike is suspended from our basketball team pending the completion of the university investigation and the investigation of the relevant authorities,” Moccia said via The Associated Press. “When these investigations will be completed I cannot say… If there are any criticisms of this decision, I am in a position to take them on myself.

“I’ve known this player for years and I know what kind of person he is. I didn’t feel the need to jump to conclusions. I wanted to give the investigation time before making any decisions.”

Bounou the calm presence behind Moroccos World Cup success

Bounou the calm presence behind Morocco’s World Cup success

EDUCATION CITY, Qatar – Yassine Bounou was the last to exit the Moroccan dressing room, visibly exhausted but with a big smile on her face. And because Bounou (or Bono) is one of the nicest guys in football, his evening wasn’t over yet. Two hours after his side’s historic victory over Spain, he was still giving interviews to pretty much anyone who asked. For radio, television, press, in English, in Spanish, in Arabic, in French. Each time he recalled his incredible exploits during the penalty shootout.

“It was incredible,” he told ESPN. “It’s a historic moment. I didn’t even prepare that well for the penalty shootout. There was so much pressure in the game so I just tried to enjoy it.”

“Penalties are about instinct, a bit of luck and that’s it, that’s all.”

– World Cup 2022: news and features | bracket | Schedule | squads

And every time he speaks, his soft voice and broad grin underscore what this historic FIFA World Cup result means to him, his team-mates and their people.

“We’re so happy for the fans, for our people, for our families,” he said. “We are beginning to understand what this victory means for Morocco, but also for the whole world. We felt the incredible support of our fans and we used it today.”

Whether or not Morocco beats Portugal in the quarter-finals, Bounou will forever be a hero. The Atlas Lions have reached the last eight of a World Cup for the first time, and that’s largely thanks to him. He stopped Carlos Soler and Sergio Busquets’ penalties and if Pablo Sarabia’s free-kick hadn’t hit the post Bounou would have dived in the right direction anyway and saved if it fell on target.

The Moroccan is a very good penalty taker. He once saved two penalties in the same game: against FC Salzburg in the UEFA Champions League in September 2021. In calendar year 2021 he saved five out of 13 penalties he was exposed to. Before the penalty shoot-out against Spain, he had saved 13 of the last 50 goals scored against him. Not a bad relationship at all. And perhaps because Walid Regragui trusted his keeper so much, or maybe because he didn’t want to tempt fate, the Moroccan boss didn’t ask his players to practice penalties the day before the game. He let her play with her flair and guts, and it worked so well.

Romain Saiss, the Moroccan captain, was full of praise for his team-mate.

“It’s amazing for him,” Saiss told ESPN. “He showed heroic play today, not just on penalties. He just wanted to show why he was named LaLiga’s best goalkeeper last season. He’s a great goalkeeper, he proved that against Spain. We owe him a lot today owe.”

2 relatives

Saiss and Bounou have been playing together for years. The keeper is different than his captain: he is more introverted, calmer, more reserved, but so efficient. The only goal he has conceded at this World Cup is that of teammate Nayef Aguerd against Canada. Along with Achraf Hakimi, Aguerd and Noussair Mazraoui, Saiss forms the best defense in the competition. And Bounou handles his back four so well; He has natural leadership qualities even if he doesn’t talk too much.

“We trust him,” Azzedine Ounahi, Morocco’s brilliant midfielder, told ESPN. “We know he’s an excellent goalkeeper. We knew that if we went to penalties he would do the work for us. And he did. Spain didn’t even get a single penalty.”

“He’s one of the best goalkeepers in the world and he proved that today.”

The belief and trust of Regragui and the Bounou squad is clearly one of the keys to Morocco’s success in Qatar. At 31, this is the stage Bounou has dreamed of since growing up in Montreal, Canada. He has achieved great things with Sevilla, joining from Girona in the summer of 2019, winning big trophies like the UEFA Europa League and causing big upsets.

Now he wants to make it with Morocco and will be confident he and his team-mates can repeat their efforts when they face Portugal on Saturday. The celebrations will continue for a while, but Bounou, despite being 191 cm (6ft 3) tall, will not be noticed or pushed to the front. But as soon as the ball kicks against Portugal, he’ll feel like he’s on a mission again.

Anthony Davis leaves Lakers Cavs game with flu like symptoms wont return

Anthony Davis left Tuesday night’s game in Cleveland late in the first quarter with flu-like symptoms and did not return.

CLEVELAND (AP) — The flu paralyzed Anthony Davis. It’s the only thing that’s been stopping him lately.

Davis was forced to leave Los Angeles’ game against the Cleveland Cavaliers after Tuesday night’s first quarter, and the Lakers struggled without their all-star center in a 116-102 loss.

Davis had 99 points in his previous two games and was in tears for the past 10 years as the Lakers went 8-2 to erase most of a terrible start this season. He scored just one point in eight minutes before being forced to leave.

Davis didn’t attempt a shot while adding three rebounds and two assists before being forced to call it a night.

Lakers coach Darvin Ham said Davis’ symptoms gradually worsened throughout the day.

“His temperature was 101 and some change,” Ham said. “AD wanted to try to play but he felt too weak. He’s drained and dehydrated. It’s obviously a big loss considering how he’s been playing lately.”

Ham said Davis likely won’t play in Toronto on Wednesday. He also stressed Davis did not test positive for COVID-19.

“Because of COVID, people forget there’s a common cold and a common flu out there,” Ham said. “That’s what we’re dealing with here.”

The eight-time All-Star, who has played just 76 games over the past two seasons through injury, was named NBA Western Conference Player of the Week Monday after averaging 37.8 points, 13.0 rebounds, 3, 0 assists and 3.3 blocks.

In his last 10 games, the 29-year-old averaged 34.2 points and 15.4 rebounds. He also shot 63% from the ground and 86% from the free throw line.

Davis scored 55 points and added 17 rebounds and three blocked shots in Sunday night’s win in Washington. He lost 44 points in the previous game against Milwaukee.

Without him, the Lakers lacked a central defensive presence and Cavs center Jarrett Allen had 24 points, 22 in the first half on 10-of-11 shooting.

Trying to close the gap, LeBron James grabbed 17 rebounds — his most in a road game to date. Reserve Thomas Bryant replaced Davis and had a season-high 19 points in 28 minutes, but Los Angeles couldn’t make up for Davis’ loss.

“It’s a tall order,” James said. “Literally and figuratively.”

1670403971 Andrew Luck discusses Colts retirement his biggest regret

Andrew Luck discusses Colt’s retirement, his biggest regret

Andrew Luck finally spoke about what led to his abrupt retirement from the NFL and the regret he felt afterwards.

The ex-Colts quarterback spoke to ESPN’s Seth Wickersham for a thoughtful play that begins with the 2012 No. 1 overall pick in Indianapolis, where Luck has lived even after hanging up his shoes. It also expands and narrates moments before, during and after his last snap.

The story tells how Luck attended Summit High School in Colorado in August, where a kid asked him what his biggest NFL regret was. Luck abruptly retired in 2019 at the age of 29 after a Colts preseason game and wished he could do it again.

“I regret the timing of my retirement,” he said.

Luck went on to say that he felt he was letting people down, a fear that followed his career. He quit after a productive 2018 season in which he threw 39 touchdown passes, led the Colts to the playoffs, and was named NL Comeback Player of the Year. Still, he was in pain.

Midway through the season, his foot and ankle became an injury problem. Instead of retiring right after the 2018 playoffs, Luck waited until August to make the call. The burly quarterback felt the timing of his retirement wasn’t right, insisting previous injuries and other problems were adding up.

foalAndrew Luck, Getty Images

After labrum surgery cost him all of 2017, Luck still felt like his shoulder was weak. Rehab didn’t strengthen him at first, and after the Colts quarterback took a trip to the Netherlands with coach Willem Kramer, he felt more disconnected from his career and marriage than ever.

“There were some things I didn’t like about myself when I looked in the mirror,” Luck told ESPN. “I was self-absorbed, withdrawn, in pain and feeling pressure.”

His injuries and desire to have a constant presence for wife Nicole and daughter Lucy ultimately played into Luck’s decision to leave the griddle — and choose to be a father and husband over an NFL QB. The pressure that comes with being a No. 1 pick increased over time, but was evident even before the Stanford product arrived in the NFL.

foalAndrew Luck runs off the field.AP

He said the media attention leading up to the draft “caused him to break free from a story that felt like it was written.” While no one knows how Luck’s full story will end, we now know that there came a time when his personal life grew larger than football.

“To play quarterback, you don’t have to worry about anything other than the task at hand,” Luck said. “And that seeps into other areas of life. It’s not the healthiest way to live.”

The four-time Pro Bowler retired with 171 touchdowns, 2,3671 passing yards, a 60.8 career completion percentage and a 53-33 regular season record.

1670402942 Who is Goncalo Ramos the man who replaced Cristiano

Who is Goncalo Ramos – the man who replaced Cristiano Ronaldo in Portugal’s World Cup line-up?

Portugal head coach Fernando Santos made the bold decision to drop Cristiano Ronaldo for his side’s round of 16 tie against Switzerland at the 2022 World Cup on Tuesday.

Instead, he turned to 21-year-old Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos.

And Ramos rewarded his vote of confidence quite emphatically.

The youngster fired an impressive shot from a tight angle just 17 minutes into the Portugal game to put his side ahead.

Moments after half-time, Ramos then doubled his tally and completed a low cross from Diogo Dalot at the near post.

And shortly afterwards he missed Yann Sommer with a shot for his third and Portugal’s fifth goal. He became the first player at the World Cup in Qatar to score a hat-trick.

His hat-trick means Ramos has scored more goals (3) for Portugal after 17 minutes in the knockout stages of the World Cup than Ronaldo in 514 minutes in the knockout stages of the competition (0), according to Opta. .

And overall he has already scored four goals in just four international matches.

But who is Ramos? And why are so many scouts impressed by the Benfica man? Here’s what you need to know.

go deeper

GO DEEPER

The Radar – The Athletic’s 2022 World Cup scouting guide

Who is he?

After Darwin Nunez was sold to Liverpool for €80m in the summer, Benfica found his replacement internally.

Ramos joined the club’s Seixal academy when he was 13. The son of a former Farense player, Marco Ramos, said: “Although I never got to see him play, I got the football fever from him.”

Top scorer at the 2019 European Under-19 Championship, a tournament where Portugal finished runners-up, it was only a matter of time before Ramos would be promoted to the first team. In July 2020, he came on as a substitute in the 85th minute against Desportivo Aves and wasted no time. The Olhao boy struck twice to become the first Benfica player to score twice on his debut since former Wales international Mark Pembridge in 1998.

The imposing Ramos, who is compared to Thomas Muller for his positional intelligence, said: “I score goals but what I have to work on is my repertoire. I haven’t always played as a striker.” Ramos scored for four different Benfica teams (the juniors, under-23s, senior team and first team) in one season, but the parallels with Muller come from his past, when he played against played a center forward.

His first call-up to the Portugal senior team came in the last round of Nations League games in September. Another Benfica academy graduate, teenage centre-back Antonio Silva, is in the same boat after Fernando Santos chose him over Jose Fonte at the last minute.

Santos couldn’t ignore her any longer. After 25 games, Benfica went into the World Cup break unbeaten. They qualified top of a Champions League group with Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus, with Ramos and Silva playing key roles in Roger Schmidt’s side.

Ramos has already scored 14 goals in all competitions this season and is the top scorer in the Portuguese Primeira Liga. He more than justified his inclusion in the squad at the expense of Goncalo Guedes.

What does the data say?

Who is Goncalo Ramos the man who replaced Cristiano

After a breakthrough in 2021-22, Ramos has moved up another level this season – scoring nine Primeira Liga goals for Benfica from 11 starts and currently leading the scorer chart in Portugal.

While he’s capable of interfering in his squad’s build-up (joining game volume, 75 out of 99), Ramos is a finisher – a man who comes to life in the box (receptions in the opposition’s box, 99 out of 99). ) and is dangerous at picking up dangerous areas to get the ball (xG from Ball Progress, 81 of 99).

His moves are smart and often find himself with a clear view of goal to quickly complete per attack touch (Shot Volume, 98 out of 99). In fact, among players with 10 or more shots in Primeira Liga this season, only teammate Antonio Silva has an average shot distance (7.7 yards) that’s shorter than Ramos’ 8.5 yards in front of goal.

What does the future hold for him?

Ramo’s record for Portugal U21s had already caught the attention of sides across Europe and frankly it would have come as no surprise if he had made the move last summer.

The Seixal Academy is a guarantee of quality. Players like Joao Cancelo and Bernardo Silva have been torn from it without establishing themselves in the first team.

In the end, Ramos stayed, his way cleared by the sale of Nunez. He is under contract until 2025, and the small print has an exit clause worth 120 million euros. However, Ramos’ value is closer to €40m.

Lisbon newspaper Record linked Brighton with a player change last weekend before the World Cup.
