World Juniors: Here are the eight times Canada missed the medal round

For the first time in five years, Canada has no chance of winning a medal at the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. This result is heartbreaking and the maple leaf has not gotten used to it over the years.

On Tuesday, it was the Czech Republic that ended the adventure of Macklin Celebrini, Jordan Dumais, Mathis Rousseau and their teammates by equalizing with just 11 seconds left in the quarterfinal match.

Here are the other eight editions where Junior Team Canada did not compete in the medal round.

2019 – Suzuki returns empty-handed

Like this year, Canada endured a few scares in the preliminary round before losing in the quarterfinals. A narrow 3-2 win over Switzerland and a 1-2 defeat against Russia set the stage for a clash with the unpredictable Finns.

The latter gave everything at the right moment and won the tournament despite six points in the group stage. Canada was their first victim as Toni Utunen scored a 2-1 win in overtime. It was Alexis Lafrenière's first appearance at the World Juniors and Nick Suzuki's only.

2016 – Montembeault warms up the bench

Head coach Dave Lowry may have regretted not trusting goaltender Samuel Montembeault in 2016. Canada ended up in a tough group with the United States and Sweden, and it was Mason McDonald and MacKenzie Blackwood who were sent between the posts, not the Quebecer.

It was Finland once again that won this Junior World Championship, defeating Canada in the quarterfinals with a 6-5 victory.

It wasn't until seven years later that Montembeault finally had a real chance with Canada, contributing to his team's gold medal at the 2023 World Cup.

1998 – Invisible Hopes

After five consecutive gold medals, Canada failed completely in 1998. This eighth place is the worst result the team has ever achieved. Some of the best prospects in the following draft wore the Maple Leaf, but Alex Tanguay (3 points), Vincent Lecavalier (2 points) and Manny Malhotra (0 points) were unable to live up to their talent.

Russia defeated them in the quarterfinals before losing to Finland in the final. In short, when the Finns are in good shape, it is never good news for Canada.

1992 – The defeats pile up

World Juniors: Here are the eight times Canada missed the medal round

PERRY MAH/EDMONTON SUN QMI AGENCY

The format of the Junior Championship was very different in 1992, with the eight participating teams only forming one group. Each club competed against the other once and the awarding of medals was decided.

After two wins against Switzerland and Germany, Canada's Eric Lindros, Scott Niedermayer and Paul Kariya have not won anything. It drew against Sweden and Finland, then was beaten by the United States, Czechoslovakia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) to finish in sixth place.

As a little history lesson: the latter won the tournament. At the beginning of the event, this team was that of the Soviet Union, but since the country's official dissolution was announced during the week, it was renamed CIS on January 1, 1992.

1987 – Disqualification

Those who have been following the World Junior Championships for a long time will remember the general battle of 1987 between Canada and the Soviet Union. Theoren Fleury and Mike Keane were among the main warring parties in a brawl unprecedented in the history of international hockey. Everyone fought for 20 minutes even though the lights were off in the arena in Piestany, Slovakia. The officials had no choice but to cancel the game and disqualify both teams.

Canada was assured of at least a bronze medal and could go for gold if it beat the Soviets by five goals. The Maple Leaf led 4-2 in the second period before the incident.

1979 to 1981 – The catastrophic sequence

Before the Canadians dominated the tournament, they had to eat their black bread at the turn of the 1980s: the bearers of the maple leaf only won one of their three duels in the preliminary round in three editions of the tournament so far.

However, future great National League players such as John Ogrodnick, Brian Propp, Brad McCrimmon, Dino Ciccarelli, Larry Murphy, Dale Hawerchuk and Doug Gilmour wore Canada's colors during these years, but the magic never happened. The Canadians finally won gold in 1982.

Rory McIlroy admits he was 'too biased' when criticizing LIV players – The Guardian

Rory McIlroy

  • He became the de facto mouthpiece of the opposition to the project
  • “I have accepted the fact that this is now part of our sport”

PA Media

Rory McIlroy has admitted he was “too biased” in his criticism of those who joined the breakaway LIV Golf Tour. McIlroy took a forceful stance against big business, which was tempting a host of top names with lavish salaries and upsetting the established order of the PGA and European Tours.

He has become the de facto voice of opposition to the project that continues to divide the sport, saying last year at the Ryder Cup in Rome that Sergio García, Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter would miss being part of the European team more than they did themselves are missed.

PGA Tour confirms talks with LIV and DP World Tour extended through 2024

As negotiations over a merger between the rival parties continue, McIlroy has taken a cautious step toward rapprochement. “Maybe I judged the guys who went to LIV Golf a little bit in the beginning,” he said. “It was a small mistake on my part because I realize now that not everyone is in my position or in Tiger Woods' position.

“I can’t judge people for making this decision. So if I have any regrets, it's probably that I was too biased in the beginning. I wouldn't say I lost the fight against LIV, but I just accepted the fact that this is now part of our sport. We’re professional golfers and we play for a living and to make money, so I understand that.”

McIlroy remains unhappy with those who criticized the established tours after the exit, but accepted that the Saudi intervention had shone a light on issues that had been overlooked for too long. “I don’t blame anyone for going and taking the money and doing something else, but don’t try and burn the place down on the way out,” he added, speaking to Sky Bet’s Stick to Football podcast .

“When people have played this for 15 or 20 years and then jump to LIV and start talking crap about where they come from, that bothers me because otherwise they wouldn't be in this position to have the career that they've had so far. What LIV did…it exposed some of the flaws in the system and hopefully golf will look at it more.

“If we ask these people [sponsors] For that much money, we have to be able to guarantee them what they will get. Part of the things we've been trying to do over the last two years is trying to figure out how we can try to bring golf back together and learn from some of the things that have happened.

“I would like LIV to be almost like the Indian Premier League of golf. In IPL cricket, they're two months in the calendar – you've got four weeks in May and four weeks in November – and you do that teamwork. It's a little different and it's a different format. If they did something like that, I think it would be fun. At least they work within the ecosystem.”

Jon Rahm became LIV's latest high-profile acquisition in a matter of weeks after helping Europe win the Ryder Cup triumph, a move McIlroy described as a calculated move given negotiations between rivals Tours. “It was a smart business move by Jon – it’s opportunistic,” he said. “[He] doesn't have the same heat as the first guys.

“Jon is a smart guy and I think he sees things coming together at some point, so he's thinking he'll take the upfront money, which is his prerogative, and if things come together he'll play LIV for a year and then come back to play on the tour.”

1704343347 Victory for Montreal and for women39s hockey

Victory for Montreal and… for women's hockey

OTTAWA – There was a festive atmosphere, pride and hope in the stands full of 8,318 spectators. On the ice, hockey players look forward to being part of history.

“This is a great moment for women's hockey, there's no lying about it,” said goalkeeper Ann-Renée Desbiens after her team's 3-2 overtime win. With more than 8,300 people at the game, it was loud and the atmosphere was great.”

When Quebec's Marie-Philip Poulin, the world's most famous ice hockey player, took a penalty for the Montreal team in the second period, the tension was palpable. However, Ottawa goalkeeper Emerance Maschmeyer managed to stop the play.

“It represents the past, the present, but also the future,” Poulin said of her first game in the Professional Women's Hockey League (LPHF) on Tuesday night in Ottawa. It’s been years of work and we’re finally here.”

Bettez scores in extra time

Poulin and her teammates won in overtime thanks to a goal from Ann-Sophie Bettez, but the most significant victory probably remains the sight of young hockey players in the stands holding placards to show their support and envisioning one day becoming professionals.

“It's definitely one of the highlights of my career,” Bettez agreed of his winning goal, immediately crediting Desbiens for keeping Montreal in the game, especially in the first half.

The goalie blocked 26 of the 28 pucks aimed at her during the game.

“It was phenomenal to be a part of and we joked that our players were booed during our team presentation,” noted Kori Cheverie, head coach of the Montreal team. For many it was the first time.”

Standing ovations

Jade Sauvé and Makenzie Sample, who play for the Russell Coyotes women's hockey team in Ontario, were among those who encouraged Montreal and their favorite player, Poulin. However, several teammates from that 11-and-under team lined up behind Ottawa.

“It's really fun and it's a good game,” Jade remarked as the score was tied 1-1 at the end of the second period.

Claire Dalton scored the first goal for the Montreal team in the second period on an assist from Jillian Dempsey. Ottawa had scored first earlier in the game through Hayley Scamurra on the power play.

Ottawa's first goal, which was eventually disallowed, was greeted with a standing ovation. However, the puck went under the net and landed in the cage defended by Desbiens. The crowd rose to its feet again when Scamurra and Czech Katerina Mrazova scored at the start of the third period. Laura Stacey scored the other Montreal goal to force overtime.

“The story that is being written”

Poulin quickly made sure her name appeared in the game recap, earning the first penalty of the game just over three minutes into the first period.

“We’ve been talking about this for so many years,” Beauceronne also argued. When draft day happened [NDLR: le 18 septembre]That's when we realized it was really happening. And the fact that we are playing this first game is historic.”

“It's history being made,” confirmed Erin Ambrose, who plays on the blue line for the Montreal team. It’s not just about playing games, that’s the whole point of this league.”

A long wait

Also visible in the stands was Andréanne Desforges, proudly wearing her Canadian team jersey with the number 29 bearing the name Poulin, while her friend Marie-Claude Daigneault wore that of Cole Caufield of the Montreal Canadiens. The two girls, who came from Outaouais, had driven an hour to attend the meeting.

“I have been following this league project for a long time and it was important for me to be present at this historic game and to encourage them,” said Andréanne.

IN THE NOTEBOOK

  • The Montreal team has two more away games, the first on Saturday in Minnesota and on Wednesday, January 10th in New York, before hosting their first home game on Saturday, January 13th at the Auditorium de Verdun.
  • Former Montreal Canadiens head coach Claude Julien was in attendance at the TD Place arena and served as an advisor to the Ottawa team during training camp.
  • Quebecer Elizabeth Mantha was one of the referees at Tuesday's meeting in Ottawa.
  • The Professional Women's Hockey League brings together six teams (Boston, Minnesota, Montreal, New York, Ottawa, Toronto). Each club will play 24 regular season games before the playoffs.
  • Ontario's Ella Shelton scored the first goal in LPHF history as New York beat Toronto 4-0 on Monday.
  • Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu native Jade Downie-Landry became the first Quebecer to earn a point in the LPHF after picking up an assist on Jill Saulnier's goal in New York's win on Monday.

The night Waterman played in Matute, he sparked a heated fight because he got in the way of Christian Cueva

Cecilio Waterman is Alianza Lima's eighth signing for 2024. The Panamanian will have his first experience in our country, but it will not be his first time in Matute. As you read, the 32-year-old striker set foot in La Victoria in 2015 during the night of the Blue and White Oath.

Cecilio Waterman was in the Alianza Lima vs. Phoenix game

Let's go back 9 years. Alianza Lima was preparing to present the team it had assembled for the 2015 season. The Blue and White Night took place and the guest of this game was Club Atlético Fénix.

YOU CAN SEE: Why should Alianza Lima sign Paolo Guerrero? The 4 reasons for this step

As journalist Marcello Merizalde also remembers, the Uruguayan team was also one of them Cecilio Waterman, who started as a starter and was substituted after the game. Now there was a small argument between the new signing of the Blue-Whites and Christian Cueva, who had scored the goal in Alianza's 1-0 win.

As you can see in the pictures, “Aladino” was fouled by one of the Fénix players. As he lay on the ground, Waterman approached with the clear intention of stepping on him. The video then shows a big fight that led to the expulsion of some footballers.

What was Alianza's lineup against Fénix in 2015?

The first thing to mention is that the blue and white team was led by Uruguayan Guillermo Sanguinetti. That evening in Matute, Alianza lined up as follows:

  • George Forsyth (Portero)
  • Roberto Guizasola (right-back)
  • Miguel Araujo (central defense)
  • Marcos Miers (central defense)
  • Luis Trujillo (left defender)
  • Pablo Míguez (containment midfielder)
  • Pablo Albarracín (containment midfielder)
  • Gabriel Costa (midfielder)
  • Willyan Mimbela (volante)
  • Víctor Cedrón (Flyer)
  • Mauro Guevgeozián (striker).

Leao Butron, Koichi Aparicio, Christian Cueva, Osnar Noronha, Carlos Preciado, Julio Landauri and Jorge Molina were the substitutes.

As mentioned above, “Aladino” scored the only goal of the game in the 63rd minute. Finally, the red cards distributed in this game went to two players from Club Atlético Fénix: Lucas Cavallini and Angelo Gabrielli.

QB Purdy is among nine 49ers selected to the Pro Bowl – ESPN

Brock Purdy and Tua Tagovailoa were selected to their first Pro Bowl on Wednesday as the starting quarterbacks for their respective conferences.

Purdy is the first 49ers quarterback to be named to the Pro Bowl since Jeff Garcia in 2002.

Tagovailoa is the first Dolphins quarterback to be named to the Pro Bowl since Dan Marino in 1995, ending the NFL's longest active drought, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

It is the first time the two starting quarterbacks will be selected for the first time since the 1999 season, when Pro Football Hall of Famers Peyton Manning and Kurt Warner were selected.

Purdy was one of nine players selected by the San Francisco 49ers (12-4) to secure the NFC's No. 1 seed. He was joined by edge rusher Nick Bosa, defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, fullback Kyle Juszczyk, tight end George Kittle, running back Christian McCaffrey, cornerback Charvarius Ward, linebacker Fred Warner and tackle Trent Williams.

The 49ers (13-3) had the most players selected. Baltimore (13-3) and Dallas (11-5) each have seven Pro Bowl players.

Quarterback Lamar Jackson, safety Kyle Hamilton, center Tyler Linderbaum, defensive tackle Justin Madubuike, linebackers Patrick Queen and Roquan Smith and kicker Justin Tucker were selected by the Ravens, who secured the No. 1 pick in the AFC.

Quarterback Dak Prescott, punter Bryan Anger, kicker Brandon Aubrey, cornerback DaRon Bland, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, guard Zack Martin and edge rusher Micah Parsons were selected by the Cowboys, who can clinch the NFC East title with a win on Sunday.

In addition to Purdy, other first-year NFC selections include Rams rookie receiver Puka Nacua, Lions rookie tight end Sam LaPorta, Eagles running back D'Andre Swift, Rams running back Kyren Williams, Lions edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, Bears edge Montez Sweat and Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson, Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon, Falcons safety Jessie Bates III, Seahawks safety Julian Love, Ward, Bland, Aubrey, Saints return specialist Rashid Shaheed and Lions special teamer Jalen Reeves -Maybin.

In addition to Tagovailoa, other first-year AFC selections include Browns tight end David Njoku, Dolphins running back Raheem Mostert, Bills running back James Cook, Dolphins fullback Alec Ingold, Ravens center Tyler Linderbaum, Madubuike, Queen, Hamilton and Broncos return specialist Marvin Mims Jr., Steelers special teams player Miles Killebrew and Jaguars long snapper Ross Matiscik.

Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald was selected 10th time. Martin, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner are nine-time Pro Bowl picks. Juszczyk and Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill are making their eighth appearance.

28 teams had at least one player selected and 21 clubs had multiple players selected.

Player selection was done through consensus voting by fans, players and coaches, with each group's votes counting as one-third in deciding the final rosters. The NFL is the only sports league to combine fan, coach and player voting to determine its All-Star teams.

The Pro Bowl takes place on February 4th and returns to Orlando, Florida for the first time in three years. This is the second year for the Pro Bowl Games with a multi-day AFC vs. NFC competition that includes skills competitions and culminates in a flag football game. Peyton and Eli Manning will serve as coaches again.

Pacioretty's big return to TVA Sports

The New Jersey Devils played spoilsport for Max Pacioretty's debut with the Washington Capitals, winning 6-3 on Wednesday night at Capital One Arena.

The former Montreal Canadiens captain was limited to five short games with the Carolina Hurricanes last season due to a second Achilles tendon tear on Jan. 19.

In his first appearances since the injury with his new club, the 35-year-old winger was limited to 11 minutes and 47 seconds of playing time as he played alongside Dylan Strome and Matthew Phillips on his team's third line. Pacioretty finished his night of work with a -1 differential.

Despite everything, the striker was relieved to be back in action. However, he is aware that he still has a long way to go before he is back in top shape.

“I've played five games in almost two years, so yeah, a lot of emotions, but at the end of the day it probably couldn't be worse for me than tonight. So we have to improve,” he said after the meeting, his comments reported by The Hockey News.

“It's a tough situation right now, I think I've had some practice with a line,” Pacioretty continued. It's the time of year when we don't train much. I don’t want to use it as an excuse, but I definitely felt like I practiced a line once.”

Thanks to two goals from captain Nico Hischier, the Devils quickly took a 2-0 lead after 9:50 minutes. John Carlson brought the two teams back to a tie (3-3) at the end of the second period thanks to a cannonball on the power play.

The final stand of the game went in favor of the visitors, who had the red light flicker twice in the second half of the game through Dawson Mercer and Michael McLeod without any response.

Connor McMichael and Evgeny Kuznetsov are the other players from the American capital team who responded.

The Argentine team and the radical decision it will make

The Argentine team and the radical decision it will make with the “10” after the retirement of Lionel Messi

For some, Lionel Messi is the best footballer in the world. In Argentina, fans adore the “Pulga” after he led them to win the Qatar 2022 World Cup and the 2021 Copa América Argentine Football Association (AFA) will make a radical decision if the Inter Miami football player decides to retire from football. What is it about?

During an interview, the president said AFA, Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia, stated that the number “10” will be permanently retired from the Argentina national team if Lionel Messi decides to no longer play for the Albiceleste.

“If Messi leaves the national team, we will not allow anyone to wear the number '10' after him. This number '10' will be retired for life in his honor. “It’s the least we can do for him,” he told the newspaper Sport about the head of Argentine football.

Number “10” tried to be removed by Diego Maradona

This is not the first time that the AFA has attempted to retire the Argentina national team's number 10. When Julio Grondona was president he tried to withdraw it because Diego Armando Maradona would no longer wear the Albiceleste. However, this decision could not be fulfilled due to a FIFA regulation. This company stated that teams in the maximum national team tournament used numbers with sequential numbers from 1 to 23.

Since when has Lionel Messi worn the “10” in the Albiceleste?

Lionel Messi wore an Argentina national team jersey with the number “10” for the first time on March 29, 2009. On this occasion, the Albiceleste met Venezuela on matchday 12 of the 2010 World Cup qualifiers in South Africa. The victory went to “Pulga” 4-0.
