Any hope that a two-week break and assurances that the team's head coach would remain the head coach would light a fire on the 2023-24 Louisville men's basketball team were quickly dashed Wednesday night.

The Cardinals lost their 22nd straight road game – a streak that now spans two full calendar years – with a lifeless 77-53 loss to Virginia in Charlottesville.

Louisville's only bright spot on Wednesday was freshman reserve Curtis Williams, who came off the bench and scored a team-high 14 points. Mike James was the only other Cardinal to score in double figures, finishing with 11 points. No U of L player shot better than 50.0 percent from the field.

Virginia remained largely untroubled when it had the ball in its hands throughout the night. As a result, the Cavaliers practiced 10 three-pointers as a team and shot 51.7 percent from the floor.

Under the leadership of head coach Kenny Payne, Louisville is now 2-21 in ACC games and 0-20 in games away from the KFC Yum Center.

There are still two and a half months left.

The Canadian achieved this for the first time since the 2018-2019 season

DALLAS | The Canadian, who had lost in his previous three games, was looking to return to Montreal with a record of .500 during those seven away games. Despite the challenge from the Stars, one of the best teams in the Western Association, the Habs accomplished their mission. A first since the 2018-2019 season.

Martin St-Louis' side quickly endured a chaotic start to the game which saw the locals score first in the 11th second and ultimately win 4-3.

But it was time for an end. The visitors saw their rivals, the best team still trailing, score two goals in the final four minutes to move within a point. It smelled burnt.

It was four minutes in which the young Canadian team could learn. And since you learn better from winning than from losing, everyone left the American Airlines Center with a smile on their face.

Slafkovsky is confident

The Habs owe this victory primarily to the commitment of their attackers. As the evening progressed we saw them heavily involved in forechecking and defensive retreats. This efficiency allowed them to cause numerous turnovers at their own blue line and launch a quick attack.

In some of them, Juraj Slafkovsky was the focus. Furthermore, it was his hard work reaching Sam Steel that laid the foundation for Jordan Harris' first goal of the season.

“We should give him voluntary support,” said the defense attorney at the end of the meeting.

If this first game of 2024 is synonymous with what awaits Slafkovsky this year, that's a good omen. In the morning, St-Louis reiterated that the Slovakian was getting more and more involved with the opposing goalkeeper and that he knew how to take advantage of the moments when he was there.

On the Canadian's first goal, Nick Suzuki's, the 19-year-old athlete put in a great performance, using his size to attack the top of the slot and provide his captain with a precise relay.

The big forward is gaining confidence and that can only be good news for his linemates Suzuki and Cole Caufield.

Barely

The performance of the first trio should also be highlighted. Suzuki led the team with a goal and an assist, while Cole Caufield celebrated his 23rd birthday by scoring a goal for the third straight game. This is an indication that he may have found his touch again.

The Canadian players can therefore build positively on the start of 2024. The Habs also managed to stop the second-most offense on the Bettman circuit…for 56 minutes.

Thanks to Samuel Montembeault, who stopped the always dangerous Joe Pavelski twice in the third period.

In short, the Canadian returns to Montreal with seven points out of a possible 14.

“If we end this trip with a win, we will come back with a .500 record. If you had given us that before we left, we would have told ourselves it would be a success,” the Canadian head coach explained after his team’s morning training.

We succeeded, but only just. After collecting five out of six possible points, things got even worse later. However, it has to be said that the quality of the opponents was significantly higher than that of the opponents before Christmas.

Memphis Grizzlies vs. Toronto Raptors: How to watch NBA online, TV channel, live stream info, start time – CBS Sports

Mid-term report

The Raptors are on the road, but they don't look any worse for wear. They have some cushion as they currently lead the Grizzlies 62-48.

If the Raptors keep playing like this, they will increase their record to 14-20 in no time. On the other hand, the Grizzlies will have to settle for an 11-23 record unless they turn things around (and quickly).

What you should know

The Toronto Raptors will face the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. ET at FedExForum. The Raptors have insisted on making their last three games absolutely thrilling games, posting a 1-2 record in this stretch of close contests.

It was close last Monday, but Toronto got the better of Cleveland to secure a 124-121 victory. Kudos to the oddsmakers for accurately predicting both the winner and the narrow margin.

Pascal Siakam was the standout offensive player of the competition with 36 points and five rebounds. He continues to roll the dice and has surpassed his previous score in each of the last four games he has played.

Meanwhile, the Grizzlies were on a three-game losing streak, but that streak continues. On Tuesday they won against San Antonio by a score of 106-98. The win was exactly what the Grizzlies needed after a 123-92 loss in their previous game.

The Grizzlies' victory was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable points came from Ja Morant, who posted a double-double with 26 points and ten assists.

Toronto's win increased its record to 13:20. As for Memphis, their win increased their record to 11-22.

In this contest, the number of possessions will likely be an important factor: the Raptors haven't given up the ball easily this season, averaging just 12.9 turnovers per game. It's not like the Grizzlies are struggling in that regard, however, as they average just 13.8 turnovers per game. Given these competing strengths, it will be interesting to see how their clash unfolds.

The Raptors will be hoping to beat the odds on Wednesday as experts believe they are headed for a loss. Those looking to play the spread should keep Toronto's opponents in mind: They have a solid 6-3 record against the spread against Memphis in their last nine meetings.

According to the latest NBA odds, Memphis is a slight 1-point favorite against Toronto.

The oddsmakers were exactly in line with the betting syndicate in this case, as the game started with a 1-point spread and stayed right there.

Jacques Martin believes the senators need to change

Jacques Martin believes the senators need to change

It's only been two weeks since Jacques Martin took over as manager of the Ottawa Senators, but the Franco-Ontarian's frustration is already starting to set in, especially given performances like those on Tuesday night.

At the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, the “Sens” allowed five goals in the first period and lost 3:6. The damage was quickly done and the late comeback was of no use.

• Also read: Already 900 points for Connor McDavid

• Also read: William Nylander and the Maple Leafs would be closer to a spectacular agreement

It's a scenario repeating itself for the Ottawa team, which has also missed comfortable leads since Martin took over on Dec. 18. The interim coach tries to limit the damage with a 3-4-0 record, but he's slowly having enough.

“It's a lesson we've learned about the level of competitiveness we need to have. We just have to do things faster. […] “We win a game and then we are the team we were before,” he explained at a press conference.

“At a certain point in the season or in your career you can no longer make excuses,” the 71-year-old continued about his team. They have to decide what they want to be. It's not like there are a lot of first years on this team. They've been through this before, so I think they need to make a change. Above all, they must change their state of mind.

Constancy

The frustration is at least shared by the other team members. In Martin's opinion, it's not one or two players who need to give more, but most of them.

Quebecer Thomas Chabot is not to blame, he is perhaps the best of his team since returning to play on December 31st. The defender picked up three points and maintained a +3 lead in two games.

“You’re not going to win a game in the National Hockey League if you allow five goals in the first period,” he said. It's clear and simple. Especially not against a team like Vancouver, which has had a lot of success this year.”

“It's really frustrating at the moment, but I believe in this group,” Claude Giroux continued. We have the potential to win ten times in a row if we work throughout the game, if we are consistent and if everyone participates. I fully believe in it.”

Against the Canucks, Anton Forsberg allowed four goals on nine shots before giving way to Joonas Korpisalo with four minutes left in the first period. The Finn gave in a minute later.
