With their fifth pick in the MLB draft Sunday night, the Washington Nationals selected outfielder Elijah Green, landing a high-profile high school player for the second year in a row. Then, with the 45th pick in the second round, they added Jake Bennett, a left-handed pitcher from the University of Oklahoma.

Green, an 18-year-old from Florida’s IMG Academy, stands out for his height — 6ft 4, 225 pounds — and plus speed. Two National League scouts, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to do so publicly about opposing teams, predicted Green would remain in midfield due to his reach and strong arm. As a right-hander, Green has shown power in all fields and has expressed slight concerns about his performance against off-speed pitches. But most importantly, he’s still a teenager, which means the pick is both a sign of faith in his promise and a tall order for the Nationals’ player development staff.

This was the Nationals’ highest pick since they first picked Bryce Harper in 2010. In an exclusive interview with Yahoo Sports on Sunday, the 10-time All-Star revealed why he was willing to make financial sacrifices to improve the team, addressed the off-season signings, talked about where he stands physically , and talked about his partnership with Joel Embiid and he introduced the launch of his first own wine collection “J-Harden”.

At the end of the Sixers’ 2021-22 season, depth was identified as a significant, glaring weakness. Harden and Daryl Morey, President of Basketball Operations, soon had discussions about how the team could make the leap into the next season.

“I had conversations with Daryl and it was explained how we could do better and what the market value was for certain players. I told Daryl to improve the roster, sign who we have to sign and give me what’s left,” Harden told Yahoo Sports. “I want to win so badly. I want to compete for a championship. That’s all that matters to me at this stage. I am willing to take less to enable us to achieve this.”

The Sixers signed defensive specialist PJ Tucker on a three-year deal from Miami, $33 million; signed shooter Daniel House for two years, $8.5 million; combo guard De’Anthony Melton picked up on a trade; and signed Trevelin Queen, the 2021-22 G League MVP.

“I think we have a much stronger team,” Harden told Yahoo Sports. “We wanted to address that. If you now look at our team, we are able to go much further. I like how we compare to the other top teams.”

For the Sixers to reach their full potential, Harden must return to his usual dominant self. The 2018 MVP struggled with numerous ailments last season, including a delicate right thigh muscle injury.

He was heavily criticized for his play during the 21 regular season games he played in Philadelphia after being traded from Brooklyn. His stats didn’t match his standard offensive blasts, yet the 32-year-old veteran averaged 21 points, 7.1 rebounds and 10.5 assists with the Sixers.

I wasn’t right last season and I still averaged close to a triple-double,” Harden told Yahoo Sports. “If anyone else had those numbers, we’d be talking about them getting the maximum out. People were used to seeing me averaging 40, 30 points so they saw it as a bad year. I was in Philadelphia for a few months and had to study spontaneously. That’s it. I’m in good shape physically and mentally at the moment and I’m just looking forward to next season.”

Harden and his colleague Embiid are tasked with getting everyone on the same page.

“I speak to Joel frequently and we have meetings about how we’re going to play and what we need to do to help our team win a championship,” Harden told Yahoo Sports. “Having two of the best players in their positions on the same team is a great building block. We will grow together and try to take this team to the top. I believe we can do it together.”

In the first round of the MLB Draft, the Chicago Cubs picked right-handed pitcher Cade Horton from the Oklahoma Sooners with the seventh pick.

After spending the last two weeks telling you that I was 98% confident the Cubs would take a position player, the Cubs took a pitcher who was skyrocketing the draft boards towards the end of college baseball season would have.

Horton was a two-way player in high school who played both third base and pitching. (He also played quarterback for the football team.) He was due to be selected in the second round of high school but was not called up because of a steadfast commitment to play for Oklahoma.

Unfortunately, Horton’s career with the Sooners got a delayed start due to Tommy John’s surgery, causing him to miss the entire 2021 season. He started the season as the Sooners’ third baseman and didn’t take the mound until March 29. He struggled back up the hill for the first few starts but that’s to be expected when he comes back from surgery.

But as the season progressed, Horton improved. His fastball started out hitting 98 mph and was in the 94-95 range. He also has a slider that counts as a plus-plus and was clocked at 90 mph. Horton also worked to develop a cutter that made his four-seam fastball that much better.

All of this came to a head in the College World Series, where he was the ace of the runner-up Sooners team. In his four starts in June, Horton topped 40 batters and walked just four, posting a 2.81 ERA.

Horton has a curve and a change, but he hasn’t had to use it much in college baseball. The Cubs must be confident that they can convert at least one of those two pitches into at least one middle pitch. Otherwise, he becomes vulnerable to left-handers.

The Cubs’ statistical models on Horton have undoubtedly found him to be a spin-rate monster. His fastball has tremendous spin and his slider is just unfair. He’s also a design-eligible sophomore who won’t turn 21 until next month. The statistical models that assess age versus level would certainly be favorable to Horton.

As a two-way player and high school quarterback, you can probably guess that at 6’1 inches tall, 211 pounds, Horton is a great athlete. This is sometimes overlooked with pitchers, but some of the models say it can make a big difference.

The big problem with Horton is his inexperience. If he’s a late bloomer who really made a step forward by the end of the 2022 season, this is a great pick. Horton has shown the pitches and size and athleticism to be a No. 2 pitcher in the majors. This of course depends on him developing a third pitch. He’s got third and fourth pitches, but the Cubs need to think they can make them better.

This is certainly a bet on statistical models and the belief that the pitcher Horton was at the end of the season is the pitcher he will bring forward. It’s also a bet on the Cubs’ pitching coaches’ ability to get the best out of him and the coaches’ ability to keep him healthy.

Is that an overdraft? Maybe. Horton was expected to be somewhere in the 12-15 range, so the Cubs reached a bit. But he wouldn’t have been in the second round, and if the Cubs were really unconcerned about the other players available at seven, then it makes perfect sense to gamble on a high-headed pitcher.

And to be sure, that’s a gamble. Horton has a few question marks with his injury history and inexperience. But these question marks can also be positive factors. If Horton continues to build on his dominating performance in the College World Series, this will be a solid pick.

And I ask you all to welcome Cade Horton to the Cubs family. And hope that it will end up at Wrigley sometime in the near future.
