The news of Mayer’s death caused an outpouring of emotions on social media.

In a statement Tuesday to Stanford students, faculty and staff, Vice Vice President of Student Affairs Susie Brubaker-Cole said a student had died at a campus residence. It appears to have occurred at Crothers Hall, where police and an ambulance were spotted around 11 a.m.

The Stanford Daily reported that a police officer had identified the death as emergency medical care. Brubaker-Cole quoted police as saying there was no constant threat to the safety of those on campus. The school did not identify the student at the time, nor the cause of death, in order to respect the family’s privacy.
