Rutgers shocks Indiana (and everyone else) with Ron Harper’s late 3-pointer to keep NCAA tournament hopes alive

BLOOMINGTON – Stop me if you’ve heard this before: Rutgers was in a battle of life or death, his season hanging by a thread in a tense game, on the road, with a riotous Senior Night mob mocking them and shaking the assembly hall at its base. We’re not sure, but we think we saw Ron Harper Jr. yawn.

Because somehow the Scarlet Knights, whose plug of their life support system hung from the socket several times, shocked the college basketball world once again.

This time they made key free throws on the site – imagine that! – Survived in the last seconds of throwing out the guard Paul Mulcahy and won another three-point dagger from Harper with 2.1 seconds left – a stunning Indiana, 66-63, to keep his NCAA hopes alive with a remaining regular-season game.

You say it was a wild game? Let’s just say it was another Wednesday night for the Rutgers.

The Scarlet Knights again used defense and toughness to bring out an unlikely victory. After falling behind by seven in the half, Rutgers used the swarming and collapsing zone 2-3 to suffocate the Hoosiers in the second half, then returned to man to man to confuse them even more in the final seconds.

Rutgers (17-12) overtook Indiana 21-11 in the last nine minutes to create perhaps the most important adult day in the history of the program on Sunday, when the Scarlet Knights hosted Penn State in the opportunity to punch tickets from March Madness.

If you don’t have tickets yet, expect to get a second mortgage to buy them on the secondary market.

The victory is the fifth in a row for the Scarlet Knights over the Hoosiers (18-11). This improves their road record to 4-9, their record in games from quadrant 1 to 6-5 and keeps them in the race for a place in the top four in the Big Ten, which would win their first double farewell in the Big Ten tournament in the history of the program.

An already tense and energetic match rose to almost a brawl with 19.2 seconds left when Mulkahi, who controlled the ball, and Indiana guard Xavier Johnson became entangled in the corner. Johnson pushed Mulkahi off the Rutgers bench for a foul, but Mulkahi – disappointed with the Hussars and his 2-for-8 shot – responded with a forearm in the temple and was thrown out. Both teams made their two free throws, giving the Rutgers a 63-60 lead.

The hysteria for a fraction of a second was almost expensive. If he had just committed the foul and gone to the line, the game was probably over. Instead, Indiana retained possession after the free throws and defended Parker Stewart’s 3rd from the corner in 12 seconds until the end of the game, 63-63.

But after Rutgers refused to call a time-out, Harper asked for the ball at the entrance and calmly dribbled along the court before scoring a three-pointer from the left wing. He motioned to the audience the size of his “bow” and then bowed as the referees stopped the game to make sure it was a 3-pointer.

Harper then deflected a pass to the desperate entrances from under the Hoosiers’ basket to secure victory.

Harper led Rutgers with 19 points, senior guard Geo Baker added 13, and Omorui – overcoming a bad start in defense – added 13 points, 12 rebounds, four blocks, numerous modified shots and four big free throws in the last minute of the match. Rutgers returned to the game with Baker giving up to Harper for a pair of 3-hit points at the end of the second half.

The Scarlet Knights managed to slow down All-Big Ten striker Jackson-Davis, who scored 11 points in the first eight minutes, but only eight points in the last 32 minutes of the game, thanks to the suffocation zone.

Rutgers made his last nine free-throw attempts in the game, including six in the last two minutes to maintain his lead.

Tom Brady’s latest comments on his future continue to fuel speculation that he may retire

Technically, Tom Brady is retired. However, no one with a pulse actually believes him (and this may even include Brady himself). Almost as soon as the seven-time Super Bowl champion announced that he was finishing his book on his future career in the Hall of Fame, rumors were circulating that Brady might decide to return in the near future. Even Brady acknowledged the possibility just days after announcing that he was telling Jim Gray in his “Let’s Go!” a podcast that “never say never”.

They have not given up on potential murmurs of return since then, as Buccaneers CEO Jason Licht said on Tuesday that Tampa Bay would continue to “leave the light on” for Brady if he decided to return.

Now Brady is adding more fuel to this speculation. The quarterback appeared with Fred Couples on SiriusXM radio, and Couples asked him, “Maybe you can tell us where you’re going?”

Brady gave a labyrinthine answer to this, which seems to leave the door open.

“I’m telling you, I would like to have a clear vision of what the future holds,” Brady said via Rick Stroud from Tampa Bay Times. “I think there are a lot of great things for me and a lot of great opportunities that I know I said right after the football season. I was looking forward to spending time with my family. And I’ve been doing it for the last five weeks. And I know there will be many more than that.

“You know, I like to be busy, that’s for sure. I played a little golf and will actually see my parents tonight, which will be a real highlight for me on their field. I will sleep in the same bed I slept in when I was a child. I don’t think my mother still knows I’m coming home. So it’s just between my father and me, it’s a bit of a surprise. So I’m looking forward to looking forward to some golf over the next few days and some more family time, and then we’ll figure out where to go. ”

The last sentence does not sound exactly like a person who “slammed” the door for a possible return, as described by Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians on Tuesday. However, this could mean that Brady has finished playing for the Buccaneers and wants to play elsewhere if he retires. Earlier this week, Pro Football Talk reported that the Miami Dolphins had planned to fight Brady as a quarterback and possibly as a partial owner. The San Francisco 49ers – Brady’s boys’ team – is also a popular landing site for the peanut gallery.

If Brady decides to return to play for a new team, the Buccaneers will have to volunteer because they have his rights. Regarding Brady’s possible change to a new team, Arians said the Bucs would be reluctant to do so, saying it would be “bad business”.

North Carolina’s Sam Howell was asked to play a unique Eagles game at the NFL Scout Factory

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell is one of the best players in his position in the upcoming NFL 2022 draft, but during a recent interview at the Scout Factory, Howell had an interesting request from the Philadelphia Eagles that had nothing to do with football.

Howell was reportedly asked to shoot a basketball in a mini hoop. On Wednesday, he jokingly said he was probably off board the Eagles after making just two of five strikes. It is known that the Eagles set potential prospects through unique games, including last year, when they set the prospects through a game of stone, paper, scissors to assess their competitiveness.

Howell did not provide any details on the size of the basketball or hoop.

Howell, who could potentially enter the first round of the draft, threw 92 touchdowns and 23 interceptions in three seasons in North Carolina. The Pittsburgh Steelers may be interested in Howell’s services, especially after longtime QB Ben Rothlisberger retired after the 2021 NFL season.

Matt Coral of Ole Miss, Kenny Pickett of Pittsburgh and Malik Willis of Liberty are the other quarterbacks who can go to the first round of the draft. None of the QBs stand out as a potential player changing the franchise, but if they get into the right situation, there is certainly potential.

The Eagles have a choice of 19, but are unlikely to take Howell or any of the other defenders because they are committed to former Oklahoma product Jalen Herts, whom they consider a quarterback franchise.

Alexander Usik’s next standby match as heavyweight champion manages “unique, personal, emotional situation” in Ukraine

Alexander Usik was preparing for a rematch against Anthony Joshua, but with his country at war with Russia, Ukraine’s heavyweight boxing champion is focused on far more important issues.

So for now, the long-awaited match is postponed.

“We don’t want the rematch obligation to be dropped,” Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing, who is promoting Usik’s last four fights and will promote the rematch with Joshua, told ESPN. “So we will wait as long as Alexander Usik needs at this difficult time for him.

The 35-year-old returned to the Ukrainian capital Kyiv last week and later joined a territorial defense battalion. Usik dominated Joshua by unanimous decision in September to win the combined heavyweight championship and now owes the Englishman a rematch.

Joshua, an Olympic gold medalist, has exercised his rematch clause, which guarantees the 32-year-old a new match against Usik on agreed financial terms. Usik-Joshua 2 was planned for May or June, but as Ukraine is defending itself from Russian invasion, it is unclear when the battle will take place.

“I really don’t know when I’m going to step out of the ring,” Usik (19-0, 13 KO) told CNN on Wednesday in comments translated into English. “My country and my honor are more important to me than the championship belt.”

Usik, who has three children, is obviously worried about what lies ahead, but he is also clearly committed.

“I don’t want to shoot,” he said. “I do not want to kill anyone, but if they kill me, I will have no choice.

Hearn also told ESPN that he could book an intermediate match for Joshua if there is an extended delay.

“It’s a very unique, personal, emotional situation, and I don’t think we can really understand what’s going on there and what’s going through the minds of the people involved,” said Hearn, who rewrote Joshua (24-2, 22 KOs) to multi-year deal in september. “So for us, of course, great respect for Alexander Usik.

“We do not want the obligation for revenge to be dropped, so we will wait as long as Alexander Usik needs at this difficult time for him.

Usik’s longtime friend, another Olympic gold medalist, Vasily Lomachenko, has also joined a defensive battalion, calling into question a potential match on June 5 in Australia with lightweight champion George Cambosos. Hall of Fame boxer Vitali Klitschko, who is mayor of Kyiv, also took up arms, as did his brother, former heavyweight champion Vladimir Klitschko.

Usik said that “the bombing around is crazy”, but “there is no fear … just bewilderment. How can this be in the 21st century?”

“When there is an air strike alarm, we hide,” he added. “[Boxing] it helped me to be calm and mentally prepared. And it helps me help others who are panicked and nervous. “

Tiger Woods trolls Phil Mickelson after winning the PGA Tour PIP

Orlando, Florida – Tiger Woods raised the phrase “moving the needle” to a different level on Wednesday when the PGA Tour unveiled the winners of the Player Impact Program (PIP), which the tour first introduced in 2021.

Although he has not played in an official Masters 2020 tournament, Woods has been declared the winner of the PIP and will receive $ 8 million for it. Phil Mickelson, who recently took to Twitter to declare himself the winner of the PIPactually finished second and collected $ 6 million.

In December, Mickelson announced that he had won a PIP, tweeting, “I’d like to thank all the crazy (and real supporters) for helping me win a PIP!”

After the results were revealed on Wednesday, Woods took to Twitter, re-tweeting Mickelson with the words: “Oops.”

The admission program, which awarded $ 40 million to the top 10 graduates, was measured from January 1 to December 31, 2021, and the end result was calculated based on year-end data.

The winners used five criteria to determine the winner – Nielsen ratings, Google searches, MVP index, Meltwater Mentions and Q-Rating, based on the attractiveness and popularity of the player on social media.

The top 10 players received bonuses from the $ 40 million fund, which grows to $ 50 million in 2022. Woods and Mickelson were followed by Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spy, Bryson DeChambo and Justin Thomas, each receiving $ 3.5 million and then and Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, world number one John Ram and Buba Watson, each of whom won $ 3 million.

“Look at the 10 boys who are there, and these are the 10 boys who have been at the top of the game or have been at the top of the game for a long time,” McIlroy said Wednesday. “It’s certainly not something I check every week to see where I am, but I think it went the way most of us expected.

Patrick Cantlay, who is No. 3 in the world and not in the field of Arnold Palmer’s invitation this week, recently condemned the PIP program, saying it should give more weight to players’ results.

“I think I’m from the old school in terms of wanting the money to be allocated to the game, and I don’t think the PIP is doing that,” Cantlay told Genesis Invitational two weeks ago. “This may be the first deviation the tour has from rewarding a good game to rewarding a social media presence or popularity, so I don’t like this departure.”

Victor Howland, who does not have a Twitter account, said on Wednesday: “Obviously it would be nice to do a PIP, but at the same time I will not try to try to do that. I spend too much time on my phone, just answering messages. I see him more as a distraction than what he does to help me. My main focus is just to play better golf and that takes care of most things. ”

Blocking notes: TV contracts, Miller, Scherzer, scholarships

The Major League Baseball lockout is entering its fourth month, and the first two series of the regular season of the 2022 schedule have already been lost. Most fans are tired of rolling back and forth, pointing fingers and calling a name, instead they just want to know when they can expect MLB to be part of their daily routine again. The unpleasant reality is that there is no definite answer to this question, as we cannot know for sure when an agreement will be reached – or even when negotiations will resume.

As Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic points out, local television contracts do not require concessions from teams until approximately 25 games have been lost. Jeff Passan of ESPN adds some details, writing that avoiding discounts requires broadcasting between 138 and 150 games (with slight variations between teams). This affects the owners’ ability to endure, as well as the general fact that their wealth is significantly ahead of that of the players. In states with cold weather, April is a relatively sparsely attended month – at least after the early pressures of the opening series.

On the part of the players in the equation, a member of the MLBPA Executive Subcommittee Andrew Miller told reporters last night that union solidarity is stronger than it has ever seen (a link through Derrick Gould of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch).

“We’re ready,” Miller said. “It simply came to our notice then. This is a pity. This is not new to us. This is not shocking. Our communication, our desire to see the other’s point of view and find solutions and fight for what is right, is not what I have seen before. I can tell you that. “

Both Miller and a fellow member of the subcommittee Max Scherzer radiating strength and desire to improve conditions for future generations. Scherzer frankly said he was more than willing to “sacrifice part of [his] career “, noting that he would not have been able to sign the contract he signed without previous generations of players sacrificing parts of his career for him. At the very least, the MLBPA is setting a strong front.

It’s easier for players like Scherzer, who have made hundreds of millions in career profits, to lose their jobs than for players with little or no MLB experience. However, as noted here in the MLBTR this week, the union has been preparing for this worst-case scenario for some time, separating its licensing revenue from a separate company that allows them to take stakes in third countries.

The MLBPA has offered $ 5,000 scholarships to its members for both February and March, and according to Rosenthal and colleague Evan Drelic, it will begin offering $ 15,000 monthly scholarships on April 1. Most veterans will not apply for these checks, but for those who play closer to the minimum league – or in particular those who are expected to collect salaries from the lower leagues – this is a reasonably significant amount. The union has the means to make ends meet throughout the season by paying these scholarships, although the obvious hope is that the decision will come much sooner.

Now it all depends on how quickly the two parties return to the table and whether one or both will blink at historical levels of tension and public pressure. Clark’s assumption that property is more about “destroying the union” than bringing players back to the field speaks volumes about the gap that remains, and now, on top of that, they will be arguing about potentially distributed wages and service time. .

Dana White: Islam Mahachev “rejected” the battle with Rafael dos Anjos, now he has to face Beneil Dariusz next

When Rafael Fiziev was forced to leave UFC 272 after being infected with COVID-19, it turned out for a moment that the long-awaited showdown between Islam Mahachev and Rafael dos Agnos could indeed happen.

As it turned out, less than 24 hours later Renato Moikano came in as Fiziev’s deputy.

UFC President Dana White revealed on Wednesday that she believes a deal has been made for Mahachev to take the fight – until he receives word that the Dagestani in the lightweight category has turned down the opportunity.

“Pretty close – I thought we did,” White told Makhachev’s Barstool Sports against Dos Agnos. “When I went to bed one night, I thought it was over. I woke up the next morning and realized that they had refused him. Islam [turned it down]. No idea [why]”

According to White, as soon as Fiziev was forced to pull out the card, UFC matchmakers began looking for potential replacements as many volunteers tried to land the battle.

Mahachev was among the first people to drop his name as a possible opponent after being tied with dos Agnos in two separate cases in 2020 and 2021. He was just days away from the UFC Vegas 49 victory over Bobby Green, which was a duel , who came together with a quick save after Beneil Dariush had to leave the fray.

Mahachev even went back and forth with dos Agnos on social media for the proposed match. However, White said something must have changed because he did not accept the battle in the end.

“The best battle we could do would be him and Islam. “The RDA and Islam,” White said. “Islam rejects battle. What is the best battle you can do? [Renato] Moikano. ”

Moicano accepted the battle, knowing he would have to fly nearly 20 hours from his home in Brazil back to the United States, while reducing his weight to 160 pounds in five rounds of fighting in the best category. He actually arrived in Las Vegas on Wednesday afternoon and will now face Dos Agnos in the UFC 272 co-main event.

As for Makhachev, although he competed less than a week ago, White still expected him to take the battle with dos Anjos, although apparently this did not happen.

While all signs previously pointed to Makhachev getting a title shot against the winner of the upcoming lightweight champion Charles Oliveira and Justin Gage in UFC 274, it looks like there will be more work now before he becomes the next No. 1 contender for the division. .

“He’s obviously doing very well,” White told Makhachev. “I love the battle with Dariusz.

“Since he rejected this battle, we will remake the battle with Dariusz. We will continue this battle. I’m dying to see this battle. It goes through Dariusz, very interesting. ”

On Wednesday afternoon, Mahachev appeared to respond to White’s comments about his place in the division.
