Howie Roseman gives ammunition to both sides in the Eagles quarterback debate

Howie Roseman will address NFL Combine 2022 reporters later today around 1:15 p.m.

But we don’t really have to wait until we hear the Philadelphia Eagles’ general manager. Roseman recently sat down with Dave Spadaro for one interview for the official website of the team.

By the nature of his employment, we know that Spuds will not put pressure on Roseman in the way that Phil’s media contingent is expected. Still, Roseman offered consistent answers that stood out.

DAVE SPADARO: I guess what I wanted to find was talking to the young talent on the list. Do you feel good with the young talent on the list?

HOWIE ROSEMAN: Yes, I do. I have the feeling that we have some good, young players. But I don’t want you to feel like we’re happy with what we have. There are areas where we have been able to do better in the last few years. And we spent time looking at how we could do these things better.

I think the most important thing for all of us is not to be happy. It continues to evolve. Continuing to look at areas where we may be able to improve. Let’s keep talking and communicating with each other and find out what’s going on in the league. What are the trends, how can we stay ahead of the trends.

Because … it’s really hard to win a Super Bowl. right? You see all these great players who might have one Super Bowl win and you look at these guys and you say to yourself, “Man, how come these guys only have one Super Bowl win? These are great, great players. ‘

Well, it’s hard. It’s hard to be the last team on the line. You need so many things to go right. So if you just do things that are in the middle, the way the league somehow sets that up, yes, you can win 10 games, you can get to the playoffs. But it’s hard to be a world champion. It’s hard for confetti to fall on your head when you do things like that.

So, you have to be ready to at least go out of the box, to expose yourself there. And if you do, yes, there is some risk involved, but there is a huge benefit.

I wondered how Roseman deviated from the original question here. I also couldn’t help but think of his answer, as it has to do with the Eagles quarterback situation.

There is a common belief that the Eagles should NOT make a big move as a quarterback this offseason. That they have to be patient, stick to Jalen Hurts and try to build a list around him. That the Eagles are “too far away” to take the risk of spending significant assets to acquire a proven veteran such as Russell Wilson, Deshon Watson or Aaron Rodgers.

But the idea that there is no risk in inaction is wrong. Satisfied with less of the most important position in all sports, the Eagles may miss their window to upgrade such a critical place. Playing “safe” is not a guaranteed path to high-level success.

Perhaps Roseman did not mean the quarterback’s position as much as he agreed. Let’s look at his next answer.

DAVE SPADARO: Howie, a trick that fans always have. $ 208.2 million now. How would you describe where the eagles sit in this hat?

HOWIE ROSEMAN: I think when you ask me where we are, we have the flexibility to make moves. But this flexibility is not infinite. So, for us, we just want to make sure that every move we make is in line with our plan not only in 2022, but also in 2023. And, as you said, I’m not looking at 2025. That’s it. hard. And I’m not saying that, as if I don’t care about the Philadelphia Eagles in 2025, because I’m doing it, and it’s our job to make sure it’s in the right place in the future. But I think it’s too hard, there are too many moving parts to think that far.

So, we don’t want to be in a situation where we’re doing something so short-term right now that it’s really making it difficult for us to move forward. Especially, as you said, when some of these young players show up. Some of these young players we don’t want to leave here, we want them to have a chance to end their careers here. We need to make sure that we balance these two things.

Many would argue that Eagles’ exchange for a quarterback veteran qualifies as “something so short-lived” that it really “embarrasses” the team to move forward. Such a maneuver would make a dent in Eagles’ hat space and hamper the ability to add more talented youngsters to the list.

So, Roseman needs to be made to provide ammunition to those on both sides of the Eagles quarterback debate. It is “My wife and mother-in-law”A situation in which you will see what you want to see.

Transparency is not the name of the game when it comes to a general manager speaking in a public environment. Roseman you should not to “distribute the answers to the test”, as he often likes to express it. This is very worth remembering, as we hear from him again later on Wednesday.

“This is a story I don’t want to participate in.”

Speculation that Sean Peyton will one day coach the Dallas Cowboys has been a popular topic since the Super Bowl winner resigned from the New Orleans Saints.

The current Cowboys coach, Mike McCarthy, does not want to participate in this discussion.

“This is a story I don’t want to participate in,” McCarthy told the NFL Scouting Combine on Tuesday, according to the team’s official website. “I don’t think anyone wants to be a part of it – on either side of the fence. Honestly, Sean is being asked questions. Nothing good comes of it.”

After the Cowboys lost in the playoffs to the San Francisco 49ers, owner Jerry Jones rejected discussions about the future of McCarthy and his team. When Peyton left the Saints, speculation that the former Dallas assistant, who Jones had repeatedly tried to run his club, was mounting.

“But I think you have to understand that I spend a lot of time with Jerry, both as an owner and as a GM,” McCarthy said. “In our conversations, you talk about the partnership between the head coach and GM, these are the conversations I have. The power of partnership, what lies ahead. We have big decisions to make for the list. He turned to him. We laughed at that and moved on. This really is the place. It’s something that outsiders can talk about, but I don’t see it as a topic or something that hinders victory. “

The only way McCarthy can really put an end to talks about his job status and the opportunity for Peyton to eventually take over is for the Cowboys to win big in 2022. Anything but a trip to the Super Bowl will lead to a new round of speculation next off-season.

Liberty’s WNBA fines $ 500,000 for charter flights for players: report

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

New York Liberty are among the original teams left in the WNBA, and the franchise reportedly came under the microscope last season because it treats its players with the simplest things.

Liberty team owners Joe and Clara Tsai have chartered charter flights for players in the 2021 season, Sports Illustrated reported on Tuesday. Charter flights are against the collective bargaining of the league to maintain a competitive balance between franchises.

New York paid for charter flights for five games in the second half of the season, as well as for travel to the Napa Valley, California, according to SI.

Liberty also reportedly proposed that charter flights be the standard for all teams and offset costs for three years, but the plan did not receive enough support from other WNBA owners.

The WNBA denied making a solid offer.

“At no time has there been a proposal from the New York Liberty WNBA Board of Directors to consider offering three-year charter flights to WNBA teams,” the league told the magazine. “It was agreed that Liberty would explore the possibility of charter flights and present it on board. To date, this has not happened.

The charter flight problem reportedly angered the WNBA. The league has threatened to fine Liberty $ 1 million, take away all his drafts and even consider ending the franchise, Sports Illustrated reported.

However, it was decided that Liberty paid only $ 500,000 in fines.

Joe Tsai promised to solve the travel problem that plagued the league in July and October.

WNBA travel issues have been a hot topic as the league’s popularity has grown.

Former Indiana Fever striker Natalie Achonva talks about her team’s travel problems in 2019.

Washington Mystics star Natasha Cloud told NBC Sports Washington in 2019 that the travel situation is “garbage.”

“Where do you see this in the NBA?” I know they play a lot of matches, but we do the same thing in a short period of time for three and a half, four months. So that will make the biggest difference for us, “she said.

Carson Wentz’s days with Colts are numbered, so upgrade search is on

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Frank Reich did his best on Tuesday afternoon to keep alive the opportunity for Carson Wentz to return to the Indianapolis Colts as their starting quarterback in 2022.

The coach, whose approval of Wentz helped convince his team to trade with the Philadelphia Eagles for Wentz and his big off-season contract, would not lie that Wentz will definitely return to India in Year 2.

But he would not throw his husband under the proverbial bus either.

“I know I believe in Carson,” Reich said. “I believe in him. I laid out my neck for him. I was a big part of that decision to bring him here. I believe that he will continue to have many successes as a quarterback. This may be here, this may not be here. That decision has yet to be determined. “

Yes, he left.

It’s March and the Colts had almost two months to evaluate the quarterback they had all last season, but would you like to believe that their evaluation continues?

“I thought that this year, compared to 2020, we somehow got back on track – we defended the ball well, we made some good plays,” Reich told Wentz. “On the positive side, we emphasize the relationship between touchdown and interception and it was where you want it to be. It was a good step, it was a good step from 2020.

“So we will continue to evaluate. The process is underway. We know everyone in this business and everything is valued every year. The second part of this process is that the head coach and the quarterback are under the most attention. So we’re in the middle of the process. “

Folks, this is the process: Wentz rode an amusement park during the season and ended badly, securing his worst outing in the season finale against a terrible team with the playoffs on the line.

And on March 19, this inconsistent quarterback, who is owed $ 22 million, should also receive a bonus from the list of $ 6.294 million. But the trade will clear all $ 28.294 million of them from Indianapolis books.

So if Wentz doesn’t play really well in all the games scheduled for now and March 19 (none), the Colts are moving in a different direction – either by cutting him off or preferably swapping him.

This raises another issue because the Colts will not be involved in an attack on Wildcat or Wing T next year, so they need a new person to play quarterback.

(Mark LeBrick-USA TODAY Sports)

And they need one that is preferably an upgrade.

“I think there are a lot of things in the evaluation process, how he played, it’s dynamic,” said Reich. “It’s complicated, I have to say, it’s complicated. No one is an island unto themselves, that’s the whole picture.”

So the photo should include a replacement for Wentz. And the thing is that the deputy will almost certainly be a veteran.

We know this because the decision to move from Wentz must be made before the draft. And since Reich admitted on Tuesday that he has done very little work in studying the group of quarterbacks that will come out in this year’s draft. And because Indy doesn’t even have a choice in the first round anyway.

This means that the new Colts quarterback, a team ready to win now, will be a veteran.

So we know how the Colts will replace Wentz. But how will they upgrade?

Will they exchange Indianapolis for Jimmy Garopolo? It is not certain that the 49ers will move completely from Garopolo.

The return of Philip Rivers? He had a good season for the Colts in 2020, but is now 40 years old and has been suspended from his last game for a year.

Nick Falls? Reich was his quarterback coach in Philadelphia when the Eagles won the Super Bowl. Foles played well as a backup quarterback for Philadelphia. But Foles was a disaster every time the team signed him up to be their starting quarterback.

Mitchell Trumpets? This seems a more likely direction.

Buffalo Bills quarterback Mitchell Trubiski passes through the first half of an NFL preseason game against the Chicago Bears on Saturday, August 21, 2021, in Chicago.

Trubyski never lived up to expectations after being ranked No. 2 overall by the Chicago Bears in 2017. But he had a winning record as a Bears quarterback each of his last three years on the team.

And he seems to have restored his trust and reputation in the league, serving as a backup in Buffalo in 2021.

So this seems like a move the Colts are willing to make – to sign an experienced reserve as a free agent.

This will give the Colts their fifth starting quarterback in five seasons.

“Whatever happens in the end, whether it’s five in five years or if Carson comes back, but that decision is played out in the end, you play the hand they give you,” Reich said. “And just try to play a winning hand …”

In London, a sister remembers her brother killed on the Ukrainian front. In Glasgow, a truck driver receives a call from his wife in Lviv: the war has arrived in their homeland. And in Connecticut, a university professor is thinking about unraveling Putin.

For the Ukrainian diaspora, Putin’s war has a deep echo. We asked Ukrainians, immigrants and political experts from around the world to judge. The views expressed in this commentary are their own.

Olesya Khromeychuk is a historian, writer and director of the Ukrainian Institute in London. She told CNN that her older brother Vladimir was killed by shrapnel in 2017 during the conflict in Luhansk, eastern Ukraine.

“I am a historian. I realize that we are experiencing a moment that will be in every curriculum of European history. Now is the time to decide what place each of us wants to take in this story. Stand with Ukraine, “Khromeychuk said.

Ukrainian truck driver and father of two Alexander the Great, told CNN as he crossed the Polish border with Ukraine. His words are slightly edited for clarity.

“On Thursday I woke up in Glasgow (Scotland) at 6.00 in the morning, my wife called me and told me that the Russians were bombing our capital and our country. And that’s it. I drove my truck to London, took my car and started driving in Poland – I arrived there on Saturday.

“My family lives in Lviv. I have two children there. I am a truck driver, I work everywhere.”

“Ukraine is my homeland and if Ukrainians will not fight for our homeland, who will fight? We do not want to live with the Russian lifestyle, we want to live with our lifestyle,” the 39-year-old told CNN.

“He is no longer the master of chess, the shrewd great strategist. He is no longer a rational actor, even in the coldest and most cynical sense. He looked bad and restless,” she told Putin’s speech last Monday.

It no longer looked like a high-stakes chess player, it now felt like a Macbeth scene. My intuition was that an aging man, facing his own death, had decided to destroy the whole world. Ukraine is probably fighting for all of us. “

Sixers dared to dream big. Now they are the nightmare of the match.

When Daryl Morrie finally found her man and the 76ers finally moved on from the long-hated era of Ben Simmons, the brake pumps among us cautiously noted what the 76ers would look like after the trade.

Joel Embiid has never played with a ball-dominant guard like James Hardenwe said. And Harden has never played with a more demanding big man like Embiid. It may take them a while to figure out how to play together.

So, in this regard:

It’s hard to imagine that the Sixers are creating a scenario for a better start to the new partnership between their two superstars. Embiid and Harden played two games together; they won both, beating Minnesota and New York by an incredible 46 points in the 53 minutes they shared on the court. Philadelphia squads, including the former MVP and this year’s favorite, completely burned the Wolves and Knicks to 134.5 points per 100 possessions.

That number will fall, if only because it is about 16 points 100 higher than the most effective offense in NBA history. However, if you are going to buy a ticket for Small Sample Size Theater, it’s pretty cool when you can watch Sixers rebuild Godzilla.

In a face that certainly makes Brooklyn fans grumble (and Houston fans do their best by guiding Rick Dalton), Harden hit the ground in his new trench, averaging 28 points, nine rebounds and 14 assists. per match in his first two outings. He was relentlessly effective as a scorer: 7-for-12 inside the arc, 8-for-14 beyond it, 18-for-19 from the free throw line. And after … let’s say … up and down The half-season with the Nets, the deadly leap back that Harden helped launch a long-distance revolution, seems to be online again in Philly:

It’s the same with Harden’s elite table arrangement: the new Sixer has opened an account in the City of Brotherly Love with a brilliant 28 to 5 assist assists. A handful of those pennies have come into transition, an area where the tough Sixers haven’t had much juice this season. Harden’s first few games suggested that he could give a boost to this department.

Given his penchant for rock and his preference for isolation, you may not think of Harden as an accelerator. His Rockets teams I did ranked in the top 10 at a pace in six of its eight full seasons in Houston, thanks in part to its ability to grab the ball from the edge – of 185 guards who have played at least 5,000 minutes in the last decade, Harden ranks 10th. on the frequency of rebounds in defense – and either tries to take him to the trunk alone, or throws passes to alternating teammates.

Prior to Harden’s arrival, the Sixers averaged 12.3 quick break points in 48 minutes; in the last two games they are up to 20 with Harden on the court. It doesn’t look exactly like it did when Simmons was going to be in full swing until the end, but the performance of an elite pass ready to pick up the pace in the ecosystem seems to have stimulated the Sixers to run a little harder:

Whatever low-hanging Harden fruit can help the Sixers break away during the break, however, is mostly a bonus. He was brought to Philadelphia to turn what was the top 10 half-time offense into one of the best in the league, and to ensure that the team does not roll over every time his center-claiming MVP rests. So far, so good: Philly scored a scorching 118.5 points per 100 on the half-court in Harden’s first two games, according to Cleaning the Glass. the two Embid-Harden didn’t need time to establish themselves as one of the scariest couples in the league.

Embiid has found over the past few seasons that he’d rather jump to the perimeter after placing a screen than dive hard to the edge, but he seemed very inclined to mix more rollers with Harden. Doc Rivers also added a little variety to the tandem by making his new defender curl around the screen outside the ball in a dribble with Embid, making both of Philly’s playmakers move and putting heel protection at the start of the action.

The combination of shooting, finishing, playmaking touch and vision on the court is enough to cause insomnia to the head coaches of the opponent:

If you want to change the pick-and-roll, you’d better get a pair of Bams or Giannises, because otherwise you’ll end up watching Harden cook your big one, or Embiid smashing your little ones. Play on a clean drip and give Harden space to enter dial 3. Play closer to the screen level and try to stay connected and you have to deal with Harden down one by one; overshadow the big man above his path and risk leaving the lobby open to Embiid.

Increase the pressure and try to catch Harden from above and you will allow a skilled driver who is one of the best passes in the league and the most dangerous middle class shooters to collide in fours of three around the free throw line, usually only with a smaller auxiliary protector between it and the rim. Sell to keep Harden from turning, and you give Embiid, shooting with a tic below 36 percent when threes grab and shoot, a wide-open view of threes from the top of the key.

And if you confuse any part of your coverage, chances are the ranked players aren’t. 4 and no. 8 in the frequency of free throws in the last six seasons (minimum 5000 minutes played) will make contact and reach the line. Embiid and Harden made 36 personal fouls and shot 59 free throws in their two games together; Sixers have spent nearly 46 percent of the last two bonus games, according to PBPstats.com. This may not be the most exciting watch in the history of sports and entertainment, but it certainly makes it difficult to stop a violation that seems terribly difficult even without whistles.

“It’s … I have no words for it,” Sixers guard Tyris Maxi told reporters. “[Opposing teams] I can not do anything. If they don’t go bankrupt, they will score. “

As was the case when Harden first landed in Brooklyn, giving pennies and paving the way for Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving to drive the truck, his arrival did not affect Embid’s violation at all. The big man scored 57 points in 53 minutes together and his already stratospheric utilization rate is actually up with Harden on the floor. That there ishowever, make the process of generating this violation look like a lot, a lot easier.

Without a facilitating partner capable of consistently bending converges, attracting protective attention and feeding it, Embiid has become a machine for creating strokes of necessity. Between 45 and 52 percent of his buckets have been without help in each of the last four seasons. Enter Harden: 14 of Embiid’s 17 goals (82.4 percent) in the last two games have been assisted, with the former MVP scoring the assistant in 11 of them.

“I’ve really never been so open in my life, seriously,” Embid told reporters after the victory over the Wolves. “The passes, I didn’t even expect it, and they just came. I’m not used to getting such passes … but he does. “

Embid is the greatest beneficiary of Harden’s skills, but he is not the only one; The focus that Harden requires on every possession has already made a significant difference in the class of looks that the other Sixers receive. Prior to trading, according to PBPstats.com, Sixers ranked 22nd in strike quality; what they managed in two games with Harden would lead the league for the whole season. All eyes are on Harden, and Embiid means Matisse Thybulle can roam the baseline and cut with impunity; guys like Tobias Harris, Danny Green, Georges Niang and Furkan Korkmaz will join some of the cleanest shots of their careers.

So will Maxi, who is like mine Bell colleague Kevin O’Connor said on Monday that he seemed extremely comfortable moving away from the ball to make room for Harden, scoring 38 points in a 15-on-21 shot in 21 minutes with his new back-up partner.

Instead of retiring to meet Harden’s arrival, Maxi maintained the same aggression he showed by establishing himself as a major playmaker before the All Star break. He sprints across the floor in transition and stands on tiptoe away from the action, moving along the arc to put himself in a position to take advantage of the attention Harden attracts by shooting or catching after the off-balance is over:

Harden also wears the tools to bring the lineups to the bench when Embiid takes his place – which, with the brief exception of Jimmy Butler’s experience, has been a serious struggle for the Sixers throughout Embiid’s career.

Long disgraced for his unwillingness to stun his best players, Rivers has so far kept one of Embid or Harden on the court for all but seven minutes – all of whom came in the second half to strike the Wolves. Harden’s early return to the bench was positive: a plus-8 in 22 minutes, still scoring a great video, with Harden dramatically increasing his use and striving.

It is unclear whether the other newcomer Paul Milsap will bring enough playmaker juice or energy in defense to earn minutes for something like a more spring presence of lobe threat / blockade – current G League MVP Paul Reed, rookie Charles Bassie, The 10-day Willie Collie-Stein contract, perhaps not so much the spring DeAndre Jordan, with whom Harden has often succeeded in the past. Who is 5 for these short stays, however, may not be so important; give Harden the ball and some shooters to pass to, and the second unit has a pretty good chance of staying afloat. And if the starters play so well, “staying afloat” in those minutes without Embiid will be all Philly needs.

Spoiler warning: They will not continue to play this good. They will not continue firing 65.5 percent on 2s in minutes Embid-Harden. From now on, Maxey won’t just give 25 a night at 76.1 true shooting. Damn, there may even be nights when Harden and Embid do not Combine for 30 free throws.

They will face opponents who are better prepared to improve on the game of two of the Knicks and Wolves, who are ranked 20th and 21st in terms of points allowed for possession from mid-January. For example: this weekend one back to back against the Cavs led by Jarrett Allen – and – Evan Mobley – and the kicking ass leading the East Heat. They will face high-octane disturbances with many goal scorers – and Tibul can keep only one of them. (Probably.)

Maybe Embiid will get a little tired of all the rolling; maybe Harden’s hamstring will start barking (again); perhaps Harris, who missed 13 of 18 shots since Harden’s arrival, will not feel comfortable as a fourth option. The honeymoon invariably ends; there will be moments of truth, if not in the next six weeks, then after the regular season gives way to the playoffs, where Embiid will still advance after the second round, and in Harden’s summary there are more valleys than peaks.

Even so: this Must work. A version of Embiid that should not be published 95 times per game Must they have more energy to spend to dominate defense. A version of Harden that can spend most of the game setting up a big man for all time and spraying the ball all over the court Must there is more gas in the tank in the fourth quarter. Maxi and Harris Must thrive, attacking smaller perimeter defenders in more space. Role-playing players who struggle to create shots for themselves Must play now that you have someone to create for them. These are just two games, but it’s proof of concept and a reason to dream big; sometimes, when the honeymoon is over, what follows is “happy for the rest of your life.”

“Not at all,” Gutekunst said Tuesday. “Not at all. Not a single person.”

If this is true, it would be surprising, although it is possible for teams to wait until Rodgers publicly announces his intentions for the 2022 season. Rodgers has not said whether he wants to return to the Packers, play for another team or retire. .

But if Rodgers, the league’s two-time MVP, indicated he would like to play elsewhere, there would be a lot of interest in his services and Gutekunst would review offers for a number of selected players. It is also possible that Gutekunst will refuse to exchange Rodgers, even if this is what Rodgers wants, although adopting such a firm line may prompt Rodgers to retire, to leave until the Packers get nothing back for him.

Gutekunst said he hopes Rodgers will announce his intentions before the league’s new year begins on March 16.

“I hope so,” Gutekunst said. “This is obviously the beginning of a new year in the league. There are many decisions that need to be made beforehand, so this would be helpful. I think we’ll know something before that. “

All of Packers ‘other decisions out of season are currently in the background ahead of Rodgers’ decision.

“Once we understand the situation with Aaron, everything will follow,” Gutekunst said.

This situation should be understood within the next few weeks.
