Extraordinary solar storm hit Earth by surprise Journal du

Extraordinary solar storm hit Earth by surprise – Journal du geek

She was notable for her remarkable intensity, but also for her amazing discretion; None of the monitoring services tracking these events detected the slightest warning sign before the stream of particles hit Earth’s magnetic field.

Solar storms are events that occur when the interaction of various solar winds causes an upheaval in the magnetic field. Under these conditions, a stream of high-energy particles can be catapulted from the star into a large plasma bubble; then we talk aboutcoronal mass ejection (CME)

Sometimes this radiation goes directly to our planet. It then collides with the Earth’s magnetic field, which acts as a shield against these electrically charged particles. But they don’t just hit back. They interact with gases in the upper atmosphere and this causes what is called geomagnetic storms. For reference, the most spectacular Northern Lights can be seen during these episodes.

Strongest geomagnetic storm in 6 years

It is the intensity of these disturbances that allows these episodes to be classified. This morning’s storm was rated G4. This ranks among the G5 storms that are strongest. That makes more than six years that the earth had never experienced such a powerful geomagnetic storm.

One might therefore expect that the many specialists constantly scanning the Sun would have discovered it very early. But exactly the opposite happened, because the disruption caught everyone unprepared.

© NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center

However, specialists knew that something was brewing. The US National Space Weather Service originally issued a warning on March 22nd. The agency had pointed out that class G2 solar storms, i.e. medium intensity, had to be expected. But nobody expected the violence of the phenomenon, because the warning signs were particularly discreet.

A rogue CME arrived without warning

To anticipate these phenomena, astronomers generally rely on observations of the solar corona. Very specific patterns appear when the magnetic field is disturbed and a solar storm hits. But in some cases, when the origin of the disorder is deeper, this visual signature can be extremely discreet, if not completely absent.

You can then create what is called “Discrete CME” (or Stealth CME in English). As their name suggests, they are very difficult to detect before they reach Earth, a bit like the rogue waves feared by sailors. And that’s exactly what happened this morning.

This is a pretty worrying situation. When specialists are actively observing the sun, it’s not just about advancing abstract work that belongs to basic research. There are also very specific questions, because these particle streams are anything but harmless. This radiation not only creates breathtaking polar lights. If it is strong enough to suppress the magnetic field, it represents a very concrete threat to electronic systems.

The sun’s peak activity is fast approaching

Perhaps the best example to illustrate this danger is the Carrington event, the most intense solar storm ever documented. During this super-powerful solar flare in 1859, the particle stream was so intense that telegraph operators were electrocuted. Power lines also spontaneously caught fire (see our article below).

An X-class solar flare caused a radio blackout on Earth

It is therefore easy to imagine what catastrophic consequences such an incident could have today. A similar storm could instantly bring down the entire global internet infrastructure. It would also include navigation satellites such as GPS and Gallileo systems, cellular networks…

Luckily, the storm this morning didn’t even come close to what happened in Carrington. But it was still powerful enough to wreak havoc. In particular, it generated a brief radio failure, but fierce. According to Space.com, Rocket Lab was forced to do the same postpone the launch of one of its rockets at the last minute. She feared that the on-board electronics had been damaged. SpaceX also went through a similar situation last March (see our article).

© NASA/GSFC

Suffice it to say that we must redouble our vigilance going forward. In fact, the Sun is currently in the ascending phase of its 11-year cycle. As we get closer to the peak of activity expected in 2025, the more frequent and violent the solar storms – and with them the discrete CMEs – will be.

Unfortunately, we currently have no way to protect our technology from a particularly intense CME. Therefore, while waiting for researchers to discover a life-saving trick, it will be necessary be humble in the face of the whims of our starwhile keeping her fingers crossed that she’ll be lenient in the years to come.

Good Plan News We have found the cheapest portable PC to play Diablo 4 in good condition!

Diablo 4 will be released on June 6th and the open beta will end on March 27th. But don’t panic if you missed the beta, here’s the cheap configuration to take full advantage of it without breaking the bank.

Run Diablo 4 on this affordable gaming laptop on Amazon

The Diablo License is a great classic video game and has been around since 1997. We are in its 4th edition and the game takes over from Diablo III. A new threat emanates from Mephisto’s daughter Lilith. It’s up to you to create the best possible build to defeat the threat. But it is above all a game in which you will spend a lot of time. So you can also choose the right gaming laptop.

Amazon is thus reducing the price of the HP Victus with its RTX 3050, which runs Diablo 4 beautifully, bringing it down to 799 euros for an excellent configuration. But many other titles can also be run in Ultra in Full HD.

Buy the HP Victus for €799 from Amazon

Diablo 4 on this gamer laptop configuration is ideal

You don’t always have to spend a lot of money to have the best possible experience. Diablo 4 has the advantage of running on quite a few configurations. This PC for 799 euros is therefore perfect for lovers of the license and all other games.

So we find an RTX 3050 graphics card coupled with an Intel Core i5 12450H processor. A frugal chip that can, however, unfold its full potential in the game, Blizzard’s recommendation with 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB internal SSD, on which Windows 11 is already installed, is always a good thing to mention.

On the screen side, we’re on a 15.6-inch panel in Full HD IPS with 250 nits, enough to be able to play without problems in most conditions. In short, an absolutely perfect configuration to play Diablo in the best conditions.

Tested OnePlus Buds Pro 2 The comfort of sound

Tested: OnePlus Buds Pro 2 | The comfort of sound – La Presse

The OnePlus Buds Pro 2 headphones sound crisp, are among the first to use Spatial Audio for Android and are comfortable. Only the real multiple connectivity of Bluetooth 5.3 is missing.

We love

We were immediately seduced by the sound of the OnePlus Buds Pro 2. We obviously went all out here with many concepts such as “Pure Harmony”, “Melody Boost”, two integrated 11mm and 6mm speakers, all overseen by film music composer Hans Zimmer.

All these technical marketing specifications often don’t say much. But we have to admit that these OnePlus Buds Pro 2 have great sound, all smooth but precise, with enveloping bass and crystal clear high frequencies. There are hardly any better in-ear headphones.

Connection to an Android phone is instant, with the headphones appearing on screen as soon as you take them out of the case. Once paired with a phone, they will automatically show up on other Android devices. You don’t have all of these benefits with an iPhone, but you can pair them manually via Bluetooth.

The OnePlus Buds Pro 2 share a similar design to the AirPods Pro, shaped like the head of a long-legged golf club. They fit in the ear well enough that you don’t have to worry about losing them during physical activity. There is an ambient noise cancellation function, ANC, which can be configured in four variants, from “gentle” to “maximum”. In the middle of the city it does a very satisfying job of drowning out the constant traffic noise but letting through short, high-pitched sounds. In the subway, the rumble is greatly muffled, but you won’t feel comfortable making a phone call.

The configuration on iOS is done in a home application, HeyMelody. On Android, the application is for connection only and settings are made in a sub-menu of the Bluetooth settings. All control of the headphones is done with a short or long pinch of the legs to answer a call, fast forward or rewind a song, activate or deactivate the ANC. One of the headphones can be configured to call a voice assistant to the rescue, the Google Assistant or Siri.

The music stops when you remove the headphones. Funny little gift, we have a mode called Zen Mode Air by pressing for three seconds. You will hear soothing sounds like birdsong or a crackling fire.

The tone can be customized with a feature called Golden Sound. And that famous spatial audio popularized by Apple? Basically, the sound is balanced between the two headphones depending on the head position. If you look straight ahead at a compatible mobile phone, you have the classic stereo effect. By turning your head, the sound moves as if it were coming from your phone, your computer or your TV physically and not via Bluetooth. We admire the ingenuity of the feature while questioning its usefulness.

The autonomy of each headphone is six hours with ANC, nine hours without this function. The case-headphone combo offers a maximum of 39 hours of listening time. The headphones are IP55 sweat and dust proof: they cannot be submerged in water, but they can withstand 1 bar of water pressure for 55 minutes.

We love less

OnePlus dangles “dual connection,” which allows it to “easily switch between two Bluetooth devices.” We’re not really dealing with a double connection. Despite using Bluetooth 5.3, the headphones need to disconnect from one phone to connect to another, whether between Android devices or with iOS. And we had to unpair them and then pair them again with one of our Android phones, a Pixel 7 Pro, which wouldn’t reconnect.

Only at the end of our test phase did we find the HeyMelody app particularly useful for an iPhone. On the OnePlus side, the mention was rather subtle.

You buy?

Well, spatial audio isn’t a very compelling selling point, and these headphones can’t stay connected to two devices at the same time. But most importantly, they produce very good sound with above-average battery life. The only thing missing for the iOS user is the ability to call Siri by voice and the availability of headphones across the Apple ecosystem. Android users now have this last option with Android 13.

The purchase is without a doubt highly recommended.

Wordle Today Heres the Answer Tips for March 26th

Wordle Today: Here’s the Answer, Tips for March 26th – Indigo Buzz

Here are some tips and tricks to help you find the answer to Wordle #645.

Ah, finally Sunday. And what better way to relax than with a brand new Wordle? If you’re having trouble, don’t worry – we’re here with our daily tips and tricks to help you find the solution.

If you’d rather just know the answer, you can scroll to the bottom of this article to reveal the March 26 Wordle solution. But if you’d rather find out for yourself, read on for hints, tips, and strategies to help you.

Where is Wordle from?

Originally created by engineer Josh Wardle as a gift for his partner, Wordle quickly grew into an international phenomenon, played daily by thousands of people around the world. Alternate versions of Word have even sprung up, created by fans, including battle royale Querelle, the music identification game Heardle, and variants like Dordle and Quordle that require you to guess multiple words at once.

Wordle eventually became so popular that the New York Times bought it, and the makers of TikTok even stream live while they play.

Not the day you were looking for? Here is the Wordle answer for March 25th.

What is the best starting word?

The best opening word is the one that brings joy to the heart. But if you enjoy the strategy, we have some ideas to help you choose a word that might help you find the solution faster. One trick is to choose a word that contains at least two different vowels as well as common consonants like S, T, R, or N.

What happened to the Wordle archive?

The entire archive of past Wordle Puzzles used to be available to everyone whenever they felt like it. Unfortunately, it has since been removed as the site’s creator said it was done at the request of the New York Times.

Is Wordle getting harder?

It may feel like Wordle is getting harder, but it’s actually no harder than when it started. However, you can enable Wordle’s hard mode if you’re looking for a bigger challenge.

Why are there two different Wordle answers on certain days?

Although Wordle normally only accepts one correct answer per day, it sometimes rebels against the norm and finds two different answers acceptable. This is due to changes the New York Times made to Wordle after acquiring the puzzle game.

Le Fois has since added his own updated word list, so this should be even less common than before. To avoid confusion, it’s a good idea to refresh your browser before embarking on a new puzzle.

Here’s a subtle hint for today’s Wordle answer:

Don’t get caught in knots.

Does Wordle Today answer have a double letter?

Not today!

Today, Wordle is a 5-letter word starting with…

Today Wordle begins with the letter U.

What is the answer to Wordle today?

We’re finally going to reveal the answer to today’s Wordle question, so guess now!

Are you ready?

The solution to Wordle #645 is…

SOLVE.

Don’t get discouraged if you don’t make it this time. The beauty of Wordle is that there’s always a new one to try the next day, and we’ll be back with more helpful hints and tips.

1679878837 iOS 17 would have new features users have been waiting

iOS 17 would have new features users have been waiting for – iGeneration

iOS 17 could be a much more significant update than expected. Mark Gurman today retracted his January prediction that the next major operating system release will focus on bug fixes and performance improvements. Apple would then do it again for Mac OS X Snow Leopard (2009), which refined the previous version of Mac OS – to the delight of error-weary users.

Honestly, many would have been happy about this substantive work, not necessarily visible of course, but life-saving to tighten the screws of iOS. But the Bloomberg snooper finally announces in his newsletter that Apple has changed its strategy: iOS 17 (codename “Dawn”) should finally integrate major new features that were expected.

Unfortunately, Gurman doesn’t elaborate on these new features, but we do know – or think we know – that iOS 17 will lay the groundwork for the system that will allow applications to be installed outside of the App Store, as required by the European DMA.

According to Bloomberg, Apple allows apps to be installed outside of the App Store

However, you shouldn’t expect anything as spectacular as lock screen customization. “The goal of the software is to tick several boxes on the list of features most requested by users,” Gurman writes. Tell us what you would like to see in iOS 17!

Ubisoft Teases Splinter Cell Troll or Coming Announcement

Ubisoft Teases Splinter Cell: Troll or Coming Announcement? – Xbox Squad

It’s almost become a habit. As the X019 slowly approaches us, Sam Fischer’s shadow hovers over the scene again. And while players were rather quiet for once, it was Ubisoft that ignited the powder.

In a tweet shared today, the developer’s Spanish account refers to Splinter Cell. And for the occasion, it’s not a wink or a far-fetched expression. No, the message is very clear, as is the accompanying image.

Twitter_Splinter_Cell_teaser

You have to understand the darkness to face it… #SamFisher

Less than a week after X019, one such tweet is “couillu” to say the least. The hype is likely to increase around the event, especially since the message does not come from a voice actor or a slightly too drunk manager. This is an official Ubisoft account that is a sweet dream for many: the return of Splinter Cell.

On our side, we’ll be content to consider this a troll. Obviously, such an announcement cannot be ruled out, especially in the words of Xbox Italy, which claims to be making “explosive announcements” for the X019. Despite this, we remain calm and await proper confirmation. Now I can’t even imagine what the notifications from Ubisoft’s Community Manager look like.

Good luck to him reading us 🙂
