A phenomenal scientific discovery met with suspicion Le Devoir

A phenomenal scientific discovery met with suspicion – Le Devoir

This is the story of American physicists who on March 8th published in the most prestigious scientific journal in the world experimental results revealing the existence of an exotic phenomenon, never before observed at room temperature, that of superconductivity, in a material of their invention . Such a discovery would normally evoke a chorus of praise, but this time it prompted a symphony of doubts instead. Just two weeks after this publication, the first results contradict the controversial scientific claim.

To understand where we are going with this story, we must first understand where we are coming from. Discovered in 1911 in mercury cooled to -269 °C, superconductivity is a state of matter that allows electric currents to flow without resistance. The possibilities offered by this wonder of nature immediately had physicists dreaming, who would receive no fewer than five Nobel prizes for advances in this niche in the decades that followed. The main challenge was to find materials that are superconducting at warmer temperatures.

A breakthrough came in the 1980s with the development of “high-temperature” superconducting ceramics whose magic lasts even beyond -196°C. Some superconductors have found their way into special applications where helium or liquid nitrogen is used to keep them cold. They are therefore now at the heart of most magnetic resonance tomographs in hospitals. Magnetic levitation trains also benefit from this, as do some underground cables.

At the same time, research continues. Since 2015, new temperature records have been set with “hydrides”, i.e. compounds with a high proportion of hydrogen. These prove to be superconducting at temperatures as low as -13°C, but at gigantic pressures (150-200 gigapascals), on the order of those found halfway to the center of the Earth. Only a few laboratories in the world manage to achieve such pressures with “diamond anvils”. The temperature problem may have been going away, but a new constraint, that of pressure, replaced it.

Then, on March 7, at the American Physical Society’s annual meeting in Las Vegas, Ranga Dias, a University of Rochester professor, presented to a packed room new findings that were due to be published the following day in Nature magazine. His research group has created a material, a nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride, that is superconducting at temperatures of up to 21 °C and pressures of around 1 gigapascal. This pressure may seem high – it is ten times that of the deepest oceanic chasms – but in the world of advanced materials it is considered close to ambient conditions.

The material in question is obtained by crushing lutetium, one of the rarest rare earths, for several hours and injecting it with nitrogen and hydrogen. The result is a blue crystal that turns pink under moderate pressure while also becoming superconducting, according to the reported results. “Do you know the movie Back to the Future? Mr. Dias asked the audience during the presentation regarding this film work in which a character moves on a flying skateboard. “Things like that could now be possible,” he said, according to the trade press.

Not the first time

To be too good to be true ? ” Very fast [après avoir lu la publication dans Nature], I came to the conclusion that I didn’t believe it at all. Incidentally, most of the experts in the field that I talk to about this are of the same opinion,” replies Louis Taillefer, a professor at the University of Sherbrooke and an internationally renowned experimenter in the field of superconductors. Mr. Taillefer bases his opinion on the analysis of the experimental data, which he believes has serious flaws – a background signal in the resistance curve would be unduly subtracted – but also on the story of Mr. Dias, who does not inspire confidence.

Because this isn’t the first time this researcher has claimed to have found the holy grail of high-temperature superconductivity. In October 2020, he and his collaborators claimed such a feat with a hydrogen, carbon, and sulfur-based material, again in the journal Nature. This paper, which had quickly raised doubts in the scientific community, was then withdrawn by the publisher in September 2022 for an “atypical” treatment of the data that the authors had not explained. Other physicists, after analyzing the raw data, claimed it was downright fabricated. Simultaneously, allegations of plagiarism regarding Mr. Dias’ doctoral thesis have surfaced.

In interviews given this month, Mr Dias firmly denied the allegation of data falsification. He also claimed to have performed new experiments that were verified by other scientists and submitted a new paper to the publisher confirming his 2020 findings. Regarding the accusations about his thesis, he declared that they were “a mistake”. Neither Mr Dias nor his university responded to interview requests from Le Devoir.

see clearer

After initial skepticism, the scientific community is now busy trying to understand or reproduce the latest discovery from the Dias lab. “I think everyone is working on it,” says Lilia Boeri, a professor at Rome’s La Sapienza University and a theorist of high-temperature superconductivity. She is one of the unbelievers who test if they can explain the inexplicable.

Ms. Boeri has just specialized in hydrogen-rich superconductors, such as the lutetium compound that is being talked about so much now. “I’ve studied these systems a lot,” she told Le Devoir. If the results [de M. Dias] are true, then it is very unlikely that it is a superconductor as we have predicted. Until recently, the theory brilliantly explained the laboratory-measured properties of superconducting hydrides. The physicist, who finds it difficult to believe in the new results, nevertheless acknowledges that “it is the essence of great discoveries to find something unexpected”.

In fact, the ball is usually in the camp of the experimenters. Already two groups of Chinese researchers have published results online that have not yet been peer-reviewed and contradict those of the University of Rochester. Before measuring the electrical resistance of a sample of nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride, competing laboratories must synthesize this material, the exact recipe of which remains secret for the time being. They are therefore forced to create their own crystal, which changes from blue to pink. And if they don’t find superconductivity there, critics can still claim they baked the wrong cake.

Here the story takes an incredible new turn: Mr. Dias and Ashkan Salamat, another author of the recent publication, are co-founders of a technology start-up, Unearthly Materials, which intends to “propel the century of superconductivity forward”. They just filed a patent application for their lutetium hydride. In an interview with The New York Times, Mr Dias said he would be happy to share the recipe for the material with independent researchers who could test it or send them samples, but that intellectual property issues had to be considered first decided. The researcher and entrepreneur previously said that Unearthly Materials raised $20 million from Spotify and OpenAI-related investors; One of Mr Dias’ representatives later denied the allegation.

The commercial ramifications of the case therefore risk slowing down the process of uncovering the truth. “One message we must try to get across is that there can be fraud in our field; I don’t think physicists are virtuous by default, but we’re fortunate to have the experience, the comparison with nature that’s the final judgement,” notes Michel Côté, a physics professor at the University of Montreal who researches superconductor modeling. “The truth is discovered when consensus is formed in the community, and not with a single article,” adds the one who also belongs to the “skeptic” camp.

Unreal Editor for Fortnite a tool for creating new worlds

Unreal Editor for Fortnite: a tool for creating new worlds – CCM

Fortnite fans rejoice! Epic Games, its publisher, offers software called Unreal Editor that allows players to create their own levels. Enough to spark interest in this very popular game.

With around 350 million users worldwide, Fortnite is undoubtedly one of the most popular games. And although its principle has evolved without radically changing – it’s still an online game of the Battle Royale type in which 100 players can compete on a “map”, a kind of gigantic virtual arena – it has has undergone some important changes in its latest versions. Thus, a few months ago, Chapter 4 marked Fortnite’s transition to Unreal Engine 5, a next-generation graphics engine that offers better visual representation with more detail and ray tracing – a ray tracing technique – for players to make his world more realistic than ever make.

And so that fans can go even further in their universe, Epic Games, the publisher of Fornite, has just developed its Creative Mode, a tool that will allow the most daring to personalize the game by creating their own levels. This software, called Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), available on Epic’s website since March 22, allows games and experiences to be designed, developed and published directly in Fortnite, according to the publisher.

Unreal Editor: Fortnite personalized by and for players

This editor adds new features to Fortnite’s creative mode. With it, players can create custom content such as building materials – very useful in the game to protect yourself from enemies or to monitor an area from above – but also “textures, animations and audio content” as well as new sets and visual effects. and even collaborate live with other players. We also note the arrival of a new programming language called Verse. In its beta version, it is a “prototype API and framework, but Verse’s capabilities will grow as the language evolves.” Verse will become a fully supported programming language that will be loaded into the Unreal Engine,” to use the words of Epic Games.

With the current Fortnite creative mode, the player can build and modify islands by controlling a character on the game map.With this version 2.0, he will have access to the new tools of the UEFN without having to impersonate one. Each player’s creations are shared with the rest of the global community of 270 million players as soon as they are published on the online gaming platform. Developers accustomed to using the Unreal Engine – which inspired the Unreal Editor – won’t feel out of place, as they’ll find the software’s familiar interface. But be careful, the editor will be limited: of course it will not be possible to use the new creative mode as if we were using the entire Unreal Engine and therefore do anything. The tools will then be further developed to “add more functions […]giving developers control over even more aspects of their Fortnite experiences and expanding the capabilities of the Verse API and framework. The Unreal Editor for Fortnite is now available for download. And, another piece of good news, the publisher is implementing the new Creator Economy 2.0 program, which should use 40% of the net revenue generated by the Fortnite store to reward creators, making it even more creative!

BRP gives back to the community by investing in the next generation of design professionals through this competition

ROVANIEMI, Finland, March 24, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — BRP Inc. (TSX: DOO) (NASDAQ: DOOO) yesterday proudly announced the winners of its fifth international design competition. 42 students from six universities north of the 45th parallel participated in this edition, which took place from September 9th to December 20th, 2022. Participants were invited to design an alternative personal transportation device capable of accommodating an occasional passenger and offering storage space for everyday necessities. The product had to facilitate access to cities in a safe and sustainable way. They also had to take into account the conditions associated with the northern climate, such as snow and ice.

BRP returns

The participants demonstrated creativity, ingenuity and vision in tackling key issues related to sustainable urban mobility. I thank them for their hard work and commitment in developing innovative solutions and concepts. I would also like to express my gratitude to the teachers and mentors, as well as the members of the jury, said Denys Lapointe, Chief Design Officer at BRP. It is an honor for the BRP team to contribute to the professional development of young talents in our field who are challenged to help create a better world, he added.

A rich learning
The competition allowed students to practice their academic, technical and creative skills while benefiting from the advice and mentoring of BRP staff. The latter received the support of the World Design Organization (WDO) for the first time in its history, while participants were invited to consider and incorporate some of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into their concepts.

The winners were announced at the Arctic Design Week Forum in Rovaniemi, Finland. The event, which celebrates its 15th anniversary under the motto Better Future with Arctic Smartness, promotes expertise and business related to Nordic design while inspiring designers, students, scientists and artists from around the world. . The 10 finalists from the competition attended Arctic Design Week along with some of their teachers and members of the BRP team.

And the winners are…

The big winner is Madilynn Cadaret, from College for Creative Studies (Detroit, USA). Madilynna seduced the jury members with her concept of an autonomous vehicle and her bold presentation of a 1+1 personal transport vehicle accessible to three generations and usable by people with reduced mobility. She showed great rigor in her analysis, which made her concept particularly original. She recommended translucent side panels and incorporated an interesting tire concept to ensure excellent performance in the toughest conditions. She went so far as to introduce the inner workings of the device and recommend the use of durable materials.

Madilynn is being offered a six-month paid internship at BRP’s Laurent Beaudoin Design and Innovation Center in Valcourt, Canada.

Arash Dehsaraeisabet, also from the College for Creative Studies, came second and received a cash prize of 2000 euros. Arash presented an innovative two-in-one concept, a scooter that converts into a one-wheeled vehicle to make getting to your destination easier. The members of the jury recognized the thorough research he conducted to meet the challenge of this year’s competition. Arash offered minimalist architecture and clever solutions to cope with northern climate conditions like snow and ice. He presented a product characterized by its circular design, allowing the integration of a fully retractable roof.

Ultimately, Yingqi Wu from the University of Qubec Montreal won third place and was awarded 1000 euros. The jury was impressed by the handling of the overall form of Yingqi’s pure and refined design. His presentation was very detailed, and he also included an attractive two-in-one solution for inner-city and inter-city travel, allowing the main module to be used for long distances and then turning it into a skateboard-like system for the journey .

Investing in the next generation for a better future
The BRP International Design Competition is another example of the motorsport industry leader’s commitment to playing an active role in creating a better future for all. The ChatGPT App Store: a major turning point for AI-based chatbots – Frandroid

ChatGPT, OpenAI’s AI chatbot, is shaking up the world of chatbots by taking an App Store-inspired approach and opening up a universe of possibilities for developers and users.

Not a week goes by that we don’t hear about advances in the field of dialog agents and, more generally, artificial intelligence. A week after the arrival of GPT-4 (in ChatGPT), OpenAI announces new third-party plugins for ChatGPT. What could only be considered a minor novelty is actually a significant and promising development in the field.

These plugins provide access to third-party knowledge sources, tools and databases, including the Internet. OpenAI is available in alpha for ChatGPT waitlisted users and developers and plans to prioritize a small number of ChatGPT Plus developers and subscribers before rolling out broader access.

The most intriguing plugin is undoubtedly OpenAI’s web browser plugin, which allows ChatGPT to pull data from the web to answer various questions put to it.

A ChatGPT limitation overcome thanks to a plugin

Without this plugin, knowledge of ChatGPT is limited to information prior to around September 2021. This plugin pulls content from the web using the Bing Search API and displays the websites it has visited to compose a response, citing its sources in ChatGPT responses. This is comparable to the experience that one can have with Microsoft’s Bing (based on GPT-4) but also with the future Google Bard.

A chatbot with access to the Internet carries risks. This can result in the chatbot using unreliable sources. Meta’s BlenderBot 3.0, which has since been discontinued, also had web access and quickly went astray (it had criticized its creator, Mark Zuckerberg). Among other things, conspiracy theories and offensive content were used.

This is because the live web is less organized than a static data set and therefore less filtered. Search engines like Google and Bing use their own security mechanisms to reduce the likelihood of unreliable content appearing at the top of results, but these results can be tampered with.

On the other hand, search engines have a lot of power over the data that feeds the language models associated with the Internet. Google was caught prioritizing its own services in its searches, for example responding to a travel request with data from Google Places rather than an external source.

It is likely that a specific set of rules will need to be established for plugin developers, imposing certain restrictions and limits on them in order to ensure the security and quality of the plugins offered on the ChatGPT platform.

An approach inspired by the App Store

OpenAI encourages developers to consult its documentation and API to design plugins for ChatGPT. Several partners such as Expedia, Instacart, Kayak, OpenTable and Zapier have already created their own plugins.

By using the Expedia plugin, users can design an itinerary via chat with ChatGPT based on the travel dates provided by Expedia. This includes real-time availability and prices for flights, hotels, vacation rentals, activities and rental cars.

With our new AI plugin, a traveler can start a conversation #ChatGPT to plan their next trip – complete with access to up-to-date information on availability and prices of flights, hotels, vacation rentals, activities and car rentals around the world. https://t.co/cVgLL6qln9 pic.twitter.com/YAIaj9zrEd

This move is reminiscent of Apple’s App Store when it launched on the iPhone, as it changed the way apps were developed and distributed. By allowing third-party developers to create and host their own applications on its platform, Apple has revolutionized the mobile industry by making it easier for users to access a variety of applications.

Similarly, by offering plugins for ChatGPT, OpenAI creates an ecosystem where developers can design and share their own extensions, improving user experience and opening new possibilities for AI-powered chatbots.

Resident Evil 4: The best Resident Evil is back

Considered by many fans to be one, if not the, best Resident Evil, this fourth installment was released in January 2005. After the relaunch of Resident Evil 2 and 3, it’s the logical continuation for Capcom by offering a remake of this much appreciated work.

Resident Evil 4 puts you in the role of US special agent Leon Scott Kennedy, six years after the tragic events of Raccoon City (in Resident Evil 2 & 3). It’s the first part of the main franchise, so it doesn’t take place in the famous Raccoon City. This time you are sent to Spain by the US government to rescue the daughter of the President of the United States. The latter was kidnapped and held hostage by Los Illuminados, a mysterious violent cult worshiping an ancient parasite. Your mission will not be easy.

Resident Evil 4 marks a turning point in the history of the saga and brings with it major changes. With this remake version you are entitled to greatly improved graphics and gameplay, some new features and compatibility with PlayStation VR2 for a special mission.

Resident Evil 4 Remake has been available for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PS4 since March 24, 2023. Great deals are available for PC, PS4 and Xbox Series X from launch day. You can save up to -29% on the purchase of your game. The summary of the offers can be found below:

The Aurora Borealis are growing more sparkling in the Winnipeg

The Aurora Borealis are growing more sparkling in the Winnipeg skies – Radio-Canada.ca

Many Winnipeggers have been sharing photos of the Northern Lights on social media over the past few days. According to astrophysicist Robert Lamontagne, this phenomenon keeps occurring because solar activity creates ideal conditions for these nocturnal lights to form.

According to him, the northern lights are formed when electrically charged particles coming from the sun interact with our earth’s atmosphere 80 km above our heads.

Robert Lamontagne states that these particles are more numerous if the number of solar flares is important.

We are in the growing part of the activity cycle that is expected to peak in late 2024, early 2025. In the next few years, the number of solar flares will increase, explains Robert Lamontagne. He states that the Sun’s activity lasts about 11 years.

“If the particle flux is very important, it is found to excite the upper atmosphere molecules that produce this luminous phenomenon.”

— A quote from Robert Lamontagne, astrophysicist

Boreal Predictions

Aurora predictions are possible 12 to 24 hours in advance thanks to space weather, warns Robert Lamontagne.

The particles require between 12 hours and 3 days [après une éruption solaire] to get into the atmosphere,” he explains.

He adds that the particles are attracted to the Earth’s magnetic poles, which explains why the phenomenon occurs particularly near the north and south poles, although exceptions can occur.

Intense auroras are sometimes seen along the United States-Mexico border, reports Robert Lamontagne.

The expert advises watching the Northern Lights on dark nights with no full moon and no clouds.

Jetpack Compose 1.4 – program!

This version of Jetpack Compose includes new features such as pager and flow layouts, among others. It also improves modifier performance and fixes a number of bugs.

Compose therefore now includes out-of-the-box support for vertical and horizontal paging between different pieces of content. Using VerticalPager or HorizontalPager enables similar functionality as ViewPager in the display system. No more creating adapters or fragments! You can simply embed a composable in the pager:

// show 10 elements
HorizontalPager(pageCount = 10) { Page ->
// Your specific page content as a composable:
Text(
text = “Page: $page”,
edit = Edit.fillMaxWidth()
)
}

FlowRow and FlowColumn, on the other hand, provide a way to arrange items in a container when the size of the items or the container is unknown or dynamic. These containers allow items to be moved to the next row in FlowRow or to the next column in FlowColumn when they run out of storage. These flow layouts also allow for dynamic sizing using weights to distribute items within the container.

Here is an example that implements a list of filters for a real estate application:

@Composable
funFilters() {
val filter = listOf(
“Washer/Dryer”, “Ramp Access”, “Garden”, “Cats OK”, “Dogs OK”, “Smoke Free”
)
FlowLine(
horizontalarray = array.spacedBy(8.dp)
) {
filter.forEach { Title ->
var selected by remember {mutableStateOf(false)}
Val LeadingIcon: @Composable () -> Unit = { Icon(Icons. Default. Check, null) }
FilterChip(
selected,
onClick = { selected = ! selected },
label = { text(title) },
LeadingIcon = if (selected) LeadingIcon otherwise null
)
}
}
}
