Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, November 7 (Prensa Latina) Egyptian Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad today reiterated that the climate summit (COP27) taking place in this city must become a radical turning point in efforts to combat climate change, the scourge. Adaptation and financing to deal with the problem are among the most important and pressing issues for developing countries, the official said in an interview with the official MENA news agency.
As hosts, we hope that the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) will allow us to move from the declaration of commitments to the implementation phase to achieve peoples’ aspirations, he stressed.
In this regard, he urged rich nations to honor their $100 billion a year funding pledges.
Fouad called for accelerating the pace of global climate action to reduce emissions of polluting gases into the atmosphere, step up adaptation efforts and improve financial flows for less resourced countries, particularly in Africa.
The Minister highlighted the presence at COP27 of thousands of representatives from different sectors of the world, including youth, women, indigenous leaders, businessmen, artists, academics and NGOs.
The goal is that they also contribute their ideas on the climate problems of mankind and offer innovative and effective solutions, he emphasized.
In this regard, he stressed the need to raise awareness of this issue in society in general.
The fight against this scourge will not be effective if we do not put people at the center of environmental work, whether in terms of integrating their needs or their involvement in the implementation of projects, he said.
Fouad insisted on the need to reach consensus at the conference to advance the proposed goals.
More than 40,000 delegates are attending the COP27, which will hold high-level sessions today and tomorrow with the support of around 110 heads of state and government.
