‘ronin’
UK-USA, 1998 (113 minutes). Directed by John Frankenheimer. Cast: Robert de Niro, Jean Reno, Jonathan Pryce.
Ronin is already over 20 years old but remains a benchmark of the modern thriller. His manager is the now-forgotten author of masterpieces like The Train and Seven Days of May. John Frankenheimer draws inspiration from the character of stray samurai who act as mercenaries, and focuses the plot on an exemplary macguffin, a briefcase used only as a pretext is to unfold a network of betrayal. And it features impeccable action sequences, shot the old-fashioned way with stuntmen without a touch of digital.

‘The Mercenaries’
United States, 2010 (103 minutes). Director: Sylvester Stallone. Cast: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, Bruce Willis, Dolph Lundgren.
There is nothing to bring together Stallone, Statham, Jet Li and Dolph Lundgren! And briefly mention Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis. The Mercenaries is a film that must be taken as a gigantic joke and intended as a homage to the action films of the 80’s (low congratulations). Here are all its stars, some preserved in formalin, others revived with botox, accompanied by a camera with the dance of San Vito. She can be funny just because of her cheek.

“Eight Basque Surnames”
Spain, 2014 (90 minutes). Directed by Emilio Martínez-Lázaro. Cast: Clara Lago, Dani Rovira, Karra Elejalde.
Emilio Martínez-Lázaro had already experienced a box office hit with The Other Side of the Bed. However, it pales in comparison to the overwhelming success of the eight Basque surnames. It’s true that Martínez-Lázaro more than deserves it, after such notable films as I Love Your Rich Bed, The Worst Years of Our Lives or Back Streets. This comedy plays skillfully with Andalusian and Basque stereotypes, aspires to play with a bully spirit and grows thanks to the overwhelming work of its actors.

“corrupt lieutenant”
The bad lieutenant. United States, 2009 (120 minutes). Director: Werner Herzog. Cast: Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes, Brad Dourif.
Prolific Werner Herzog rewrites Abel Ferrara’s 1992 film Corrupt Lieutenant. The German filmmaker delivers a dry and cutting staging, transforming the intentions of the original work, which centered on its protagonist’s demons, to expand it into a social X-ray, a portrait of a rotten community with no possible redemption.

‘At home’
Dans la Maison. France, 2011 (105 minutes). Directed by Francois Ozon. Cast: Fabrice Luchini, Ernst Umhauer, Emmanuelle Seigner.
François Ozon’s penchant for shady stories and ambivalent characters is reaffirmed in this pinnacle of his cinema, which freely adapts a play by Juan Mayorga. A tale dealing with human misery, the power of seduction and the allure of voyeurism, from the hand of a teacher who has grown weary of his students and discovers that one of them displays keen observation when writing. Blending drama and comedy, In the House is offered as a work that is as wacky as it is dark.

“A History of Violence”
A history of violence. United States, 2005 (96 minutes). Directed by David Cronenberg. Int.: Viggo Mortensen, Maria Bello, Ed Harris, William Hurt.
The great David Cronenberg proposes a dense and oppressive film, a morbid and suffocating story that delves into the depths of contemporary society, a society that is naturally sick and deranged. Thus the character of the exemplary Viggo Mortensen, a man who cannot escape his past, becomes a symbol, a mirror of everyday violence that emerges as unexpected as it is explosive; that surrounds us every day and that we cannot possibly turn our backs on.

“The Golden Chimera”
The Gold Rush. USA, 1925 (75 minutes). Director: Charlie Chaplin. Cast: Charlie Chaplin, Georgia Hale.
The hungriest gold digger in film history. So much so that he is willing to eat one of his boots with great glee, turn his shoelaces into spaghetti and his sole into a generous fillet. Chaplin creates an intoxicating marvel that contains some of his film’s most tender moments, such as dancing with the buns on forks, the culmination of his facial expressions. It also travels through the murky years of the Gold Rush, delivering a ruthless social satire that ridicules ambition and careerism.
