Israel’s military says air defenses intercepted all but one of the missiles that landed in a field

The Israeli military said Palestinian militants fired six rockets from the Gaza Strip toward southern Israel hours after an Israeli army raid in the occupied West Bank that killed 11 people.

The rocket attacks just before dawn on Thursday morning were not immediately claimed by Palestinian militant groups but appeared to have been triggered by the Nablus raid in which 11 Palestinians were killed.

Israel’s air defenses intercepted five of the missiles fired at the cities of Ashkelon and Sderot, the military said, and one missile landed in an open field. There were no reports of damage or casualties. Warning sirens went off in both cities not far from the Gaza Strip around 4 a.m. local time (0200 GMT), the Israeli army said.

Israeli forces kill 11 in raid on West Bank

Witnesses on the Palestinian side told Agence France-Presse they saw at least eight rockets fired.

A teenager was among the dead in Wednesday morning’s operation in the West Bank that targeted three militants who were staying near the center of Nablus’s old city. All three men wanted were killed along with seven others, including a 72-year-old man. Palestinian officials said at least 103 people were injured, many with gunshot wounds.

The raid was one of the largest in the past year, which has seen the situation in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem steadily deteriorate. A similar raid in January was followed by a Palestinian militant attack near a synagogue in east Jerusalem that killed seven Israelis.

Ziad al-Nakhala, leader of the Gaza Strip-based Islamic Jihad militant group, called the raid a “grave crime” to which “the resistance must respond.”

On Wednesday, US State Department spokesman Ned Price told a regular news conference that Washington acknowledged Israel’s security concerns but was deeply concerned by the large number of casualties and civilian losses.

The violence comes at a critical juncture in Israel-Palestinian relations, with the new Israeli government dominated by ultra-nationalists who have vowed a hard line against militants while pushing for settlement expansion in the West Bank.

First Mover Asia Bitcoin Rocks Above 241K After Mixed FOMC

First Mover Asia: Bitcoin Rocks Above $24.1K After Mixed FOMC Minutes – CoinDesk

Bitcoin declines as it surges above $24.1k after FOMC minutes

Agitated but not shaken, crypto markets fell a little, rose a little but stayed in the red on Thursday after the Federal Reserve’s Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) released unencouraging minutes.

Bitcoin recently traded at $24,164, down 1% in the last 24 hours. The largest cryptocurrency by market cap fell nearly $23,600 immediately after the FOMC report, which found slowing growth – a boon for investors hoping for more dovish monetary policy from the Federal Reserve – but also data suggesting inflation and the prospects of a hard recession remain real, cheering money hawks.

“Everyone is wary of what’s to come later this year,” Jake Boyle, chief commercial officer at crypto brokerage Caleb and Brown, told CoinDesk TV. “As of this writing it looks like the stance has become more conservative as 25 basis points has less impact than 50 but it is important for us all to remember that they are still rising which means the solution clearly not there.”

Boyle added, “Coupled with the regulatory uncertainty that the crypto space seems to be experiencing these days, it would be fair for us to assume that there will be further volatility and unexpected announcements later this year.”

Ether recently changed hands at $1,641, down 1.1% from the same time on Tuesday. However, CoinDesk analyst Glenn Williams noted that BTC and ETH diverged on another front, with investors sending Bitcoin to exchanges and removing Ether from them. The moves have signaled bearish sentiment for Bitcoin and bullish action for Ether, a departure from their usual correlation. Separately, on Tuesday, Layer 2 scaling system Arbitrum outperformed Ethereum in daily transactions, reinforcing Arbitrum’s dominance as the leading Layer 2 rollup.

Other major cryptos have been mixed, with some ticking up a bit but others slightly in the green, although APT, the token of Layer 1 platform Aptos, is up more than 6% recently.

Stocks fell amid the same inflation and recession fears that have plagued markets for the past few days, as did the S&P 500, which has a tech-heavy component and fell 0.2% for its fourth straight daily decline, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq and Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) is also slightly down.

Crypto news ranged from upbeat to reminders of crypto’s nearly 15-month storm and stress. Investment banking giant JPMorgan said in a research note that crypto exchange Coinbase is well-positioned to post a notable year-over-year improvement in EBITDA, citing lender Voyager Digital and its executives over cryptocurrency fraudulent marketing.

In an email to CoinDesk, Anthony Georgiades, co-founder of Pastel Network, a decentralized blockchain for non-fungible tokens, cryptocurrencies and Web3 technology, wrote optimistically that “the slightly better-than-predicted earnings reported by Coinbase could indicate that we are entering the final innings of a crypto winter are”.

“Interest in the digital asset market has clearly increased over the past few months, as evidenced by a rally that surprised many observers. Part of this has to do with market psychology – everyone has been so incredibly bearish that the obvious counter trade should be bullish. Coinbase was also able to increase its overall market share due to the aftermath of major crypto marketplaces like FTX.”

Georgiades was particularly optimistic about the prospects for cryptos in Asia: “There is a lot of speculation that buyers in Asia will start to increasingly resort to crypto in the foreseeable future. Even if the Fed remains hawkish in the coming months, what’s happening in other parts of the world on monetary easing could be enough to offset what’s happening in the United States.”

But he cautiously added that “there could still be deep pullbacks in bitcoin and crypto,” even as “the fodder for a sustained rally appears to be there.”

Hundreds of Fake ChatGPT Tokens Lure Crypto Investors; Majority issued on BNB chain

This story first appeared on CoinDesk on February 21.

Nefarious market participants are attempting to capitalize on the ongoing ChatGPT craze in tech circles by issuing fake tokens branded after the artificial intelligence chatbot, despite having no official affiliation with the tool.

Hundreds of such tokens have been issued over the past few weeks. Of these, 132 different tokens were issued on BNB Chain, 25 tokens on Ethereum and 10 separate tokens on other blockchains such as Solana, Arbitrum, OKChain and Cronos.

These fake issues follow software giant Microsoft’s move to integrate OpenAI’s chatbots for search services into Microsoft’s web browsers.

While OpenAI is the creator of ChatGPT, Microsoft’s own chatbot is a custom tool and is meant to be an improvement over the publicly available ChatGPT.

However, scammers don’t waste a chance to monetize the hype. Several BingChatGPTs have been issued, fueled with liquidity and seeing thousands of dollars in trading volume – despite warning signs.

“PeckShield has discovered dozens of newly created #BingChatGPT tokens, 3 of which appear to be #Honeypots and 2 have a high sales tax,” blockchain security firm PeckShield said in a tweet on Monday.

“2 of them are already down over -99%. Deployer 0xb583 has already created dozens of tokens using a pump and dump scheme,” PeckShield added, referring to the wallet address of the nefarious issuer of those tokens.

In cryptocurrency, honeypots are smart contracts that purport to give their funds to any user provided the user sends additional funds to them.

On the other hand, sales tax refers to the intentional amount of money collected by an illegal smart contract when an associated token is sold – usually it amounts to more than 50%, which means that a user who owns a $100 worth of tokens sold, only $50 received The remaining “taxed” amount goes to the developer of this smart contact.

As of Tuesday’s writing, over 170 ChatGPT-branded tokens have been issued on decentralized exchanges like Uniswap and PancakeSwap, data from DEXTools shows.

The most popular has a market cap of over $250 million, 300+ individual holders, $600,000 in liquidity and is issued on Ethereum. A separate BNB chain version has a liquidity of $246,000 and a market cap of $24 million.

The trading volume of such fake tokens — and in some cases, scams — is a glimpse that the dream of crypto punting is alive and well.

Coinbase reported Q4 results after Tuesday’s bell, beating expectations, but usage continues to decline. Pastel co-founder Anthony Georgiades shared his analysis of the crypto markets. Also, Bill Hughes, Director of Global Regulatory Matters at ConsenSys, shared his outlook on the future of US crypto regulation. And Marcello Mari, CEO of SingularityDAO, explores the realms where Web3 and artificial intelligence collide for CoinDesk’s “BUIDL Week”.

NHL Trade Grades Senators Pay Blackhawks To Take Nikita Zaitsev

NHL Trade Grades: Senators Pay Blackhawks To Take Nikita Zaitsev Off Their Hands

The trade

Blackhawks get: Defenseman Nikita Zaitsev, 2023 second-round pick, 2026 fourth-round pick.

Getting Senators: Future Considerations

Sean Gentille: The price Ottawa paid to lose a year and the change in Nikita Zaitsev’s $4.5 million AAV probably doesn’t bode well for the rest of the league — the exchange rate (second- and fourth-round picks) is high and teams that might be interested in negotiating your way out of Hell should be a little afraid of it.

However, the Senators can get away with it despite already stripping their 2022 first-round pick in the Alex DeBrincat deal. Its core is young, talented, and in most cases — Tim Stützle, Brady Tkachuk, Josh Norris, Drake Batherson, Jake Sanderson — are either locked in long-term or early in their contracts. Ottawa’s potential pipeline isn’t spectacular (24th in Scott Wheeler’s ranking), but it’s as solid as it needs to be, with projected contributions at the top. It’s easy to use a few tips to make bad money go away when you find yourself in such a situation.

Above all, the space created is really worth more than the picks to Ottawa. Next season, the last that Zaitsev would be on the books, Stützle’s overtime occurs and DeBrincat, an upcoming RFA, will likely be back on the books. The Sens need money to accommodate this, build the rest of the roster and maybe have some room to work in the next 10 days.

The Blackhawks could use Zaitsev’s help to reach the cap floor next season. Whether that’s the case or not, his goal won’t matter. They bought a pair of pickaxes for $5 million. Neat deal.

senator class: B
Blackhawks class:A

Shayne Goldman: Zaitsev has been a drag on the Senators backend, an area they need to improve on, so this is an addition through subtraction. While he did have a positive impact on the team’s expected goal suppression in 2020-21, he has hurt the team defensively for the past few seasons. As it stands, Ottawa allows the 10th-highest shooting average at five-for-five and sits in the bottom half of the league in terms of expected goals. This year, in his 28 games played, he’s increased shot rate against roughly five tries per 60 (second-worst on the team) and expected goals conceded by .23 (third-worst).

So it all clicks that the Senators have to pay to postpone his contract and it makes even more sense that the Blackhawks would be willing to absorb him. They already have one of the worst blue lines in the league, and that’s on top of that. Anything to sink her to Connor Bedard and bring her closer to the Cap bottom next year. Since Chicago literally doesn’t care about the bottom line this year or next, the on-ice aspect of this move doesn’t matter, the addition of draft picks does. It’s even more important now that they lost a trade chip in Jonathan Toews and who knows how much leverage they have in a Patrick Kane situation.

This is helping Senators increase their salary flexibility – they have rising costs and should be looking to the market for more defenders to become available – and it’s a cost they can bear considering they’ll be salespeople for some time were and have built up their pool of interested parties. But if that sets the bar for the rest of its competitors as they shift salary to add, some managers will find it difficult to navigate.

Cyclone Freddy Anatomy of an Extraordinary Weather Phenomenon

Cyclone Freddy: Anatomy of an Extraordinary Weather Phenomenon

It has a name for conjuring nightmares. Cyclone Freddy killed four people after hitting Madagascar on Tuesday evening, February 21. Accompanied by strong winds and torrential rain, it continued its devastating route across the big island in southern Africa on Wednesday and was due to reach the coast of Mozambique on Friday.

This Category 3 tropical cyclone affected “16,660 people” as it made landfall in Madagascar, according to an initial report by the National Office for Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC) released on Wednesday. Of these, nearly 11,000 had to be evacuated urgently, while 3,300 homes were flooded.

A bit of luck

Madagascar feared the arrival of Freddy, whose maximum intensity was that of a category 4 cyclone – that is, with wind speeds around 220 km / h – but which was approaching category 5, the maximum for this type of extreme weather phenomenon, reports Yale Climate Connections, a medium dependent on the famous American University Yale.

In fact, the island was already grappling with Cheneso, a previous Category 2 cyclone, back in late January. The torrential rains that fell then “degraded the soil” and increased the risk of “flooding and landslides,” Yale Climate Connections estimated.

But the residents of this region were “lucky,” says Ralf Toumi, a tropical cyclone specialist at Imperial College London. Freddy initially avoided hitting Reunion Island, which appeared to be on his way. The cyclone then largely spared Mauritius, which however experienced heavy rains.

When it finally arrived in Madagascar, it deflated “only to fall back on entering the country into a category 1 cyclone that the local authorities know how to deal with,” assures Ralf Toumi. In fact, Madagascar is the African country most exposed to these extreme events, suffering an average of 1.5 cyclones per year, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Freddy should then recover a little from the cyclone’s hair by leaving Madagascar and entering the Mozambique Channel on Wednesday evening, because “the water temperature there is currently high, which is helping to accentuate the intensity of the cyclones,” Ralph points out Toumi . But the current forecast from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), America’s main center for cyclone monitoring, calls for a breathless freddy with winds barely exceeding 70 mph when it touches the coasts of Mozambique.

A unique “monster”

So the worst seems averted. If an inhabited area had been hit by Freddy at the peak of its intensity, “it would have had an apocalyptic outcome,” stressed Emmanuel Cloppet, director of Météo-France for the Indian Ocean, in an interview with Le Monde.

Because while Freddy is unlikely to mark the ghosts like other much more destructive cyclones, “it’s a unique and unprecedented phenomenon that has just occurred,” said Xiangbo Feng, a tropical cyclone specialist at the University of Reading.

Freddy is indeed a “monster” unlike anything the Indian Ocean has known before. The energy he amassed during his voyage from Australia is unparalleled for the region. “There are essentially two ways of assessing the importance of a cyclone: either we observe its maximum intensity, which is never easy and often gives rise to debate, even if it is the criterion most commonly maintained, or we are interested in all the energy which is stored during his life and which translates the potential danger of the phenomenon,” summarizes Ralf Toumi.

For example, Freddy earned a score of 66 on the University of Colorado’s Accumulated Cyclone Energy Index. It has already broken the previous Southern Hemisphere record set by Cyclone Fantala in 2016 at 53, although it has not yet completed its journey. Even in the northern hemisphere, which is known for its very violent cyclone phenomena, such as hurricanes Katrina in 2005 or Sandy in 2012 (the word “hurricane” corresponds to the term “cyclone” for the Atlantic), there are not a single two stronger events according to the ACE Index: Hurricane Three in 1899 and Ivan in 2004.

But that’s not all. “The most striking thing is the lifespan of this cyclone,” says Xiangbo Feng. Freddy has been developing as a Pacific cyclone for more than three weeks, which is “very rare”, confirms Ralf Toumi.

“It takes a confluence of weather conditions – warm, stable temperatures, similarly strong winds at sea level and above the cyclone – that you don’t often see over such a long period of time,” says the climatologist from Imperial College London.

Freddy “refuses to die”

In general, the cyclones of this region, which originate in the direction of Australia, also branch south well before Madagascar. But not Freddy, who “continued straight ahead on an unprecedented path”, say the experts interviewed by France 24.

During his journey, “he experienced four peaks of intensity, which to my knowledge never happens,” Xiangbo Feng is surprised. Typically, cyclones, hurricanes, or typhoons experience one or two peaks at most and then decrease in intensity before disappearing. “But Freddy refuses to die,” insists the University of Reading researcher.

It is therefore a phenomenon, mysterious in many ways, that has afflicted Madagascar. “One of the main scientific challenges will be to understand whether Freddy will remain a unique event in history or whether it is the first of a new series of cyclones that will share the same characteristics in the future. [des phénomènes très intenses avec plusieurs pics sur une longue période, NDLR]’ summarizes Xiangbo Feng, who is working on tools to predict this type of cyclone behavior.

“It is certain that scientists will try to see if global warming can explain the unprecedented behavior of this cyclone,” confirms Ralf Toumi. That won’t be easy, according to this expert: “We know that ocean warming is related to climate change, but it’s much more difficult to pinpoint the other factors affecting Freddy’s lifespan, such as the power of the ocean winds.”

If this is the beginning of a new “family” of hurricanes, Xiangbo Feng believes it “could be lucky because we see them coming from afar, which allows us to prepare.”

An attempt to flex his muscles, just before Joe Biden appeared alongside Zelensky a Kyiv. According to CNN, several US officials say so Fly made a ICBM test in recent days, just before the US President’s visit to Ukraine on Monday. According to the same sources cited by the American broadcaster, the United States had been warned (just as Moscow had been warned about Biden’s trip).

However, the test of the Sarmat missile, nicknamed Satan II, would have failed. Fly informed the United States in advance of the launch across the conflict resolution lines. Another official said the test poses no risk to the US and is not considered an escalation. president Putin he did not mention the launch in his speech yesterday. The Sarmat carries nuclear warheads.

The test (failed) and US-Russia communications

The timing of the test suggests the United States and Russia communicated through different channels earlier in the week for conflict resolution purposes. US officials informed Russians on Sunday evening, hours before Biden’s visit to Kiev, that the president would travel to the Ukrainian capital, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said Monday. The Sarmat missile has already been successfully tested in the past: According to US officials, Russian President Vladimir Putin would have emphasized this in his State of the Union address yesterday if the test had been successful on Monday. Instead, Putin did not mention the launch. CNN originally reported that the test took place while Biden was in Ukraine, based on information from some sources, but one of the officials later said the test took place shortly before Biden was in the country. And a second source said the test had been carried out on Monday, without giving a more precise date.

The small fragment of the song reveals some typical rhythms of electronic music as well as synthesized sounds and Bad Bunny’s voice, which is entirely in Spanish.

“Nobody asked for it, but here we are, I don’t know if it was God,” part of the song’s lyrics read.

This would be Bad Bunny’s second official release after announcing a year off following his successful Un verano sin ti tour and collaborating with another key member of the urban genre scene. archangel on the subject of “La Jumpa”.

Currently, Bad Bunny has withdrawn all of his photos from Instagram and posted the slogan “You will miss me” on his Twitter, also after starring in a controversial scene by throwing a follower’s phone into the river, who wanted to take a selfie.

Hours before the start of the secret journey that was to take him to Kiev, the President of the United States Joe Bidenand the first lady Jill BidenThey went to an Italian restaurant, tried rigatoni, and in the eyes of the world, on Saturday night, February 18, they both returned to the White House to sleep.

But shortly afterwards and in the middle of the night, Biden, a handful of advisers and just two journalists They would get on a plane to fly to Poland and then by train to Kiev.

Jill Biden told a group of reporters that last night She had no idea what her husband was up to and that just on the day they had that romantic date, he told her that he was going to Ukraine.
