Understand Chico Buarque and Eduardo Bolsonaro’s row over ‘Roda Viva’

Chico Buarque and Eduardo Bolsonaro Chico Buarque and Eduardo Bolsonaro (Photo: AFP/Mauro Pimentel AFP/Evaristo S) “Around the world, ferris wheel / windmill wheel, spinning wheel / time turned in an instant / in the wombs of my heart.” Any Brazilian with a musical memory would recognize the composer Chico Buarque as the author of the verses of Roda Viva. However, a judge from Rio de Janeiro recently issued a ruling demanding proof of authorship of the 1967 song.

A post featuring photos of exponents of the country’s far right, such as journalists Augusto Nunes and Guilherme Fiuza, businessman Luciano Hang, federal MP Carla Zambelli, recently elected MP Nikolas Ferreira and Eduardo Bolsonaro, put “Roda Viva” on the musical track his indictment against the “censorship” of the minister responsible for the fake news investigation of the Federal Court of Justice, the STF, Alexandre de Moraes. Moraes’ name was not mentioned.

“Brazil is under censorship. In a dictatorship, freedom of expression and freedom of the press die first,” said the federal deputy and son of the President of the Republic on November 5.

Heard from the inside out, the song, a symbol of cultural resistance to military dictatorship, became a weapon of protest for apologists for the authoritarian regime that began in 1964. Third place at the Third Brazilian Folk Music Festival in 1967 and included on the 1968 album “Chico Buarque de Hollanda Volume 3”, “Roda Viva” has one of the composer’s most virtuoso lyrics and a vocal arrangement by Magro Waghabi of the group MPB4.

It also became the subject of the play written by Chico Buarque and directed by José Celso Martinez Corra. In July 1968, the CCC’s attack on the cast of Roda Viva at the Ruth Escobar Theater in So Paulo marked cultural terror on the fringes of Institutional Act Nº 5, AI5.

Outraged by the abuse, Chico demanded that the music be removed from the mail and BRL 48,000 in compensation for moral damages. “Seeing himself as the front man for a political campaign that he vehemently opposes and which, it must be said, forced him into exile, was very painful for him,” the lawyers’ first petition read on November 17.

A day later, the Deputy Judge of the Sixth Special Civil Court of the Lagoa District, Mnica Ribeiro Teixeira, pointed out the lack of “a document proving the applicant’s copyright to the song ‘Roda Viva'”.

Without judging the merits, she did not deny the authorship of the song, but demanded that it be authenticated. “After the final and unimpeachable decision, write it down and archive it.” The decision sparked criticism from political and artistic personalities on social media.

In the Nov. 23 motion to review the verdict, Chico’s attorneys pointed to “omissions and ambiguities” by the judge. “With copyright, it is not necessary to submit a registration to claim its protection in any area.” They argued, based on the Code of Civil Procedure, that if authorship is a “public and wellknown fact”, it does not require specific proof.

“It is one of the most striking songs in Brazilian popular culture and in the history of protest songs,” the defense affirmed, citing questions from the university entrance exam and Eduardo Bolsonaro’s own post, which attributed the phonogram to Chico Buarque.

Mnica Teixeira didn’t back down after the negative impact. On November 29, it manifested with drought. “The banned sentence does not constitute an ambiguity, contradiction, omission or doubt,” the judge stated. “Therefore, I am aware of the embargoes and do not issue them.”

Teixeira did not respond to criticism of the controversial decision. “The judge cannot comment on the ongoing proceedings by any means of communication. The ban is provided for in the organic law of the national judiciary,” the press office of the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice announced.

“There are people who don’t want to have their arms twisted. It would be great if she said Chico’s music. ‘I’m rethinking my decision.’ But she didn’t have that modesty, the great judges have it easy because people make mistakes,” says the composer’s lawyer, João Tancredo.

The defense will file a new lawsuit because the judge has not addressed the merits and wants the inquiry answered more quickly. “I claim no material rights. I claim no copyright for the execution. I am claiming moral damages for the use of ‘my voice, my work’ in something I did not authorize.”

The verdict cast doubt on the judge’s ideological position and cultural background. “Something out of logic. It’s illegal,” criticizes Z Celso Martinez, director of the montages of “Roda Viva” in 1968 and 2018. “She lies and makes a big fake news. Alexandre de de Moraes, about this surreal problem to solve”.

Over the phone, Z Celso asked the reporter to repeat the judge’s name. “Mnica Teixeira! What the hell, freaked out? Has she become the goddess of fake news? It doesn’t work! “I can be a witness in any situation. Only Minister Xando can do anything. It’s worse than the threat of a military coup. It’s an ode to fake news.”

“Roda Viva,” the track that accompanies the song, is about the story of a popular idol, Ben Silver, who has been swallowed up by the cogs of consumer society. “She had censorship issues and attacks on women in the theater, including Marlia Pra. I have these documents from Chico’s play. The censors went to rehearsals. Chico was in attendance. Nobody watched the play. Chico was very young and handsome. Everyone is watching Chico in the eye,” Z Celso recalled.

Singer Miltinho, member of MPB4, was also shocked by the court decision. “When I saw the news, I thought it was funny. But it’s not funny. It’s ridiculous,” says the artist, who took part in the defense of “Roda Viva” at the 1967 festival.

The interpreter mentions the crazy use of “Clice” by Chico Buarque and Gilberto Gil in an antidemocratic video by Bolsonaristas. He alerted Vinicius França, Chico’s manager, to the distortion of the music’s meaning, another notable vocal presence of the MPB4.

“I don’t think we’ve ever stopped playing ‘Roda Vida’ on any show. ‘Roda Vida’ is part of the life of MPB4. It usually closes the show, life, everyone. It’s an anthem,” adds Miltinho.

In the excerpt from “Roda Viva” brought to Eduardo Bolsonaro’s post and still airing, MPB4 sings “We’ll Go Against the Tide / Until We Can’t Resist”.

China, Ukraine and Lithium: Can we reduce CO₂ emissions by using electric vehicles?

China Ukraine and Lithium Can we reduce CO₂ emissions by

Lithium’s relative abundance is one of the reasons physicists believe the universe formed out of a massive explosion, the Big Bang, 13.8 billion years ago. The lithium atom is the smallest metallic element and was formed together with hydrogen and helium in the Big Bang. Not least because of its size, lithium has become a key element of the energy transition. Reaching the highest energy capacity, lithium-ion batteries are used in electric vehicles, electronic devices, aerospace applications (Boeing 787, military drones, satellites), etc. Currently, the best-selling electric vehicles in Europe, the Teslas Y and 3 and the Volkswagen ID.4, use lithium-ion batteries. The rise of electric vehicles (in Europe, Germany is the largest market and producer) will account for more than 90% of lithium demand by 2030, according to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. Demand for lithium is expected to skyrocket as the price has risen by as much as 600% over the past year. Securing lithium supplies is becoming the modern version of oil geopolitics.

Although lithium deposits are distributed across the planet (mainly in natural salt pans), the extraction and refining processes are complex, expensive and highly polluting. And here begins the first problem: China controls more than half of the world’s lithium processing and refining, according to the International Energy Agency, and has three-quarters of the world’s mega battery factories. Over the years, American, Japanese, and French companies transferred their intellectual property in metallurgical technologies to China, which had lower production costs due to cheap labor, lax environmental regulations, and generous government subsidies. China saw an opportunity to master the future of electricity and seized it. Europe has almost no lithium mining or processing capacity and one of the fastest growing electric vehicle markets. Major European lithium mining projects have been abandoned (due to popular disapproval of the environmental impact), including a mine in Jadar, Serbia, proposed by Rio Tinto and another in Portugal, planned by Savannah Resources.

Elon Musk and Ukraine

Against this background, Ukraine also emerges. Ukrainian researchers have speculated that the country’s eastern region (the very region occupied by Russia) contains about 500,000 tons of lithium oxide. If this preliminary assessment holds up, Ukraine could be home to one of the largest lithium reserves in the world. When tycoon Elon Musk, Vladimir Putin or German Olaf Scholz talk about Ukraine, lithium must not be forgotten in order to understand its context. There is also no effective technology for recycling, the infrastructure to achieve the circular economy of lithium in Europe is not in place, but battery waste in Europe is already starting to worry. There will be a great temptation to export the scrap to countries like China or South Korea for recycling.

The main motivation for this global commitment to lithium is to reduce emissions caused by road, air and marine transport (COSCO, the Chinese company that will control 24.9% of the Port of Hamburg, is also the dominant company at the manufacture of electric ships ), but worryingly, a growing body of research indicates the likelihood that the widespread replacement of conventional cars by electric vehicles will have a relatively small impact on global emissions. And the result may even increase emissions.

China controls more than half of the world’s lithium processing and refining

Although an electric car emits nothing while driving, around 80% of its total emissions come from “grey energy” from the battery manufacturing processes and the generation of electricity to power the vehicle. This relationship is reversed in a conventional car, where approximately 80% of emissions come directly from the fuel burned while driving. Almost all the details of the fuel cycle of conventional automobiles are well known. In contrast, any embodied emissions calculation for a battery is an estimate based on several assumptions. Analyzes estimate that between two and six barrels of oil (in energy equivalents) are needed to make a lithium battery, which can only store the energy equivalent to 4 liters of gasoline. As of today, nobody can measure the CO₂ consumption of today’s electric vehicles or predict that of tomorrow.

A typical car battery weighs 500 kilos and contains about 15 kilos of lithium, 30 kilos of cobalt, 65 kilos of nickel, 95 kilos of graphite and 45 kilos of copper. According to today’s average values, the amount of ore mined for a single battery is approximately: 10 tons of lithium brine, 30 tons of ore for the extraction of cobalt; five tons for nickel; six tons for copper; and a ton of ore for graphite. Making a single battery can require digging and removing a total of about 250 tons of earth. After that, a total of about 50 tons of ore will be transported and processed to separate the ores. The International Energy Agency warns that current plans for electric vehicles, along with plans for wind and solar power, will require a 300% to 4000% increase in global mining production for the required key minerals, which they mostly find in Africa. Russia, China and Latin America. It is estimated that the use of electric vehicles would save only about 15% of global oil consumption. A very disturbing example of the current situation: The Wagner Group, Russia’s bloodthirsty mercenary army, is plundering natural resources in a dozen countries in Africa and committing gross human rights abuses to pay for Moscow’s war machine.

Stopping the climate emergency is not just about getting rid of fossil fuels. We must build an entirely new system of energy production and consumption, which in itself carries enormous dangers if not done correctly and ethically and with consideration for the entire planet and all of its inhabitants. Perhaps the greatest risk is that resources like lithium, which offer a complex hope for our survival, will turn the world into a hopeless geopolitical dystopia. There is no doubt that science plays a role in improving technologies (nanotechnology and biotechnology play a fundamental role in this field) and in quantifying processes. But like most of the problems we face in the 21st century, solving them requires modern methods that take into account the depth of human relationships with the planet and nature, we need honesty, humility, democratic science and collaborative strategies that enable us to do so enable you to face the complexity of reality. Economic or political ideologies will not save us.

The three pillars of snowmobiling in Quebec

The three pillars of snowmobiling in Quebec

“The entire Québec snowmobile industry, or more specifically the structured snowmobiling run by the clubs and the Fédération des Clubs de Motoneigistes du Québec, is based on three pillars,” explained Michel Garneau, the federation’s chief communications officer.

“The first is that of the user/payer. Snowmobilers pay to build and maintain trails. This is quite a unique group in the world of recreational tourism. The second pillar is the generosity of landowners. More than 50% of the hiking trails are on private property. Landowner participation is a crucial element for the industry. Finally, the third pillar is the contribution of volunteers. The true managers of the trail network are the volunteers. They negotiate rights of way, cut branches, renew bridge decks, install signs, take care of the maintenance of machines and paths. They are the key element because without them there would be no snowmobile industry in Quebec as we know it today. »

TRAILS USEFUL FOR MANY

Some people openly criticize people who drive snowmobiles. What they don’t know is that hiking trails are also used for other types of activities.

“The snowmobile community often acts as a project manager for infrastructure that is used for other recreational activities,” explains the expert. In 2010, the National Coalition on Trails, a pan-Canadian organization, conducted a study that concluded that 42.1% of all recreational trails in Quebec benefit from snowmobile community management. In Canada, that number rises to 66.4%. »

cabin

Photo provided by Dominique Gobeil

It is well known that trails and bridges that are used for snowmobiling in winter are also used for other activities in summer and fall such as hiking, biking, horseback riding and more.

“Often when you browse, you find that these projects were initiated or funded by the snowmobile community. We must therefore remember that while we are motorsport enthusiasts, we are trail developers first and foremost. We can be proud that we are creating pathways and that other groups are benefiting from our momentum and investments,” adds Mr. Garneau.

For this specialist, a simple check would prove what he says.

“If people went out and did a little inventory in their part of the country, they would quickly see many of the investments and projects being pushed by the snowmobile community. They could then understand that we contribute to their quality of life because they now have access to many outdoor activities through the hiking trails. »

FINANCING

When snowmobilers buy their license plates each season, a portion of the amount goes back to them to fund the activities.

“The government is raising funds from registration fees through the SAAQ. These amounts are reallocated to operational and infrastructure costs. There is $35 that goes to the association and is allocated to very specific programs for the clubs. There is an amount of $4 that is used to fund the infrastructure. »

Michel Garneau gives the example of the new pedestrian bridge over the Péribonka river in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean.

“Some of the funding is being provided by snowmobilers and quad bikers. Finally, $1 is used for investment projects related to fauna and flora, a program managed by the Fondation de la faune du Québec. So the whole $40 goes into government hands, but it comes from the snowmobilers. »

Another important source of funding for clubs is the sale of access rights.

“Some snowmobilers believe that what they pay goes back into the association’s pockets. I invite you to consult the Amount Distribution table where you will see that only $16 goes to the Federation as working capital. Most of the price paid for the right of access is reallocated to the development and maintenance of the trails. »

Before ending his interview, Mr. Garneau highlighted a fact that illustrates very well the commitment of volunteers, such as the Pionniers des Laurentides Club, which has just celebrated its 60th anniversary.

“It’s a great example of volunteer work. We’re talking about a volunteer-run NPO that has managed to survive through the centuries to continue to promote snowmobiling among its members and community today. It’s quite an achievement. »

American domestic terrorism and us

Two North Carolina substations were shut down by gunfire, leaving 45,000 subscribers without power.

The FBI is investigating and the White House is closely monitoring the situation. This appears to be another case of domestic terrorism.

According to the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), since the beginning of the year, there have been nine physical attacks on the US power grid with intent to endanger national security.

The rise of ultra-right terrorism

Federal police investigations into domestic terrorism have tripled in the past five years and have doubled since the January 2020 Capitol riot: According to Newsweek internal FBI data, 90% of investigations relate to “anti-authoritarian” attacks.

The power grid is the ideal target for far-right “accelerating” groups intent on wreaking havoc through infrastructure sabotage, attacks, and assassination in order to destabilize and destroy the American political system.

Last January, a DHS report warned that domestic extremists had been developing “credible and concrete plans” for attacks on electrical infrastructure since at least 2020.

In February, three white supremacists pleaded guilty to conspiring to attack power grids to incite civil unrest.

Our power lines are under attack

We are not immune to these types of attacks on our electrical infrastructure.

We remember the December 2014 airstrike by the “Pilot of the Stars” Normand Dubé on six 735-kilovolt lines that plunged 180,000 homes into darkness.

The man who sought revenge on Hydro-Québec and caused him $30 million in damage was sentenced to 16 years in prison.

And it was probably an eco-conservationist who damaged the high-voltage power line from Hydro-Quebec to New England in 2004.

Another potential threat to Hydro, a 2021 intelligence bulletin released by DHS and the FBI, warned of the threat drones pose to critical energy infrastructure.

A small drone was believed to have carried out an attempted attack on a substation in Pennsylvania.

Drone technology is readily available to terrorists and the deranged. Inexpensive, easy to transport and operate, small drones with improvised explosive charges have been used in assassination attempts.

Physical and IT security

While here, as in the United States, media attention focuses on the security of the power grid from cyberattacks, its physical security remains extremely important.

Americans are developing countermeasures to protect their power grids from computer and physical attacks.

With Hydro-Québec just investing $2 billion to acquire 13 hydroelectric power plants in New England and having its lines extended to New York soon, it’s sure to benefit.

Russian authorities hunt suspected deserter after police shooting

Update: The suspect has been arrested, Rostov region governor Vasily Golubev said on Wednesday.

Police in Russia’s Rostov region are searching for a suspected Russian army deserter who shot at police officers in the southern Russian city of Novoshakhtinsk near the Russian-Ukrainian border on Tuesday, Russia’s TASS news agency reported.

The man reportedly shot police officers after emerging from a wooded area on the outskirts of the city in southern Russia’s Rostov region, injuring one officer.

According to the Russian news agency Mash, the man is suspected of being a deserter from the Russian army.

Kindergartens and some roads in and out of town have been closed and local authorities have advised residents to stay indoors.

Security concerns in the city, just 20 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, follow a spate of attacks on Russian soil believed to have been carried out by the Ukrainian military as Kiev’s tactics in the war continue to shift.

An oil tank was set on fire in a drone strike on an airfield in Russia’s border region of Kursk on Tuesday, while Moscow blamed Kyiv for two similar attacks on Monday after explosions at airbases in the Ryazan and Saratov regions killed three soldiers and wounded four others had been.

Russia’s border regions continue to feel the effects of the conflict. Satellite images last month show ditches being dug and roadblocks set up in the Belgorod border region.

However, Tuesday’s shooting in Novoshakhtinsk is the first suspected case of a deserter returning to Russia shooting at security officials.

Why it matters: Risk assets were weighed down on Tuesday by fears of a looming recession. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq ended the day down 1.4% and 2%, respectively. US stock futures are trading flat at the time of writing.

Cryptocurrency trader from Amsterdam Michael van de Poppe said that despite the “general weakness in indices,” there are some “rather strong moves” in bitcoin.

Justin Bennett noted Bitcoin is down 0.8% this week, while the S&P 500 is down 2.8%.

The retailer said on Twitter: “If [stocks] Here one can find a soil for which it would probably bode very well [crypto.]”

“Bitcoin continues to hover around $17,000, which is pretty impressive given the recession-driven risk-off tone on Wall Street. Crypto traders are waiting for something big to happen before returning to this space,” he said Edward Moya, Senior Market Analyst at OANDA.

“Either we see decisive regulatory action being taken to fuel long-term growth, or the busy cycle continues while other crypto companies perish,” the analyst said in a note provided to Benzinga.

Erosive wealth could lead to a recession next year, according to a report Jamie Dimon, the manager of JPMorgan Chase. The bank board noted that households are spending less on pandemic stimulus funds that have helped boost the economy in 2021.

Despite this, purchasing power is reported to be higher than during the 2021 bull run mood. Five women file new lawsuit accusing Bill Cosby of sexual assault

Five women who have long accused Bill Cosby of sexually assaulting them early in his career have filed the latest lawsuit against the 85-year-old comedian, naming NBCUniversal, a studio and production company complicit in the abuse .

The lawsuit comes more than a year after Cosby left prison after his 2018 sexual assault conviction was overturned in Pennsylvania. This year, a Los Angeles jury awarded $500,000 to a woman who said Cosby sexually assaulted her at the Playboy Mansion in 1975 when she was a teenager.

The lawsuit, filed Monday under New York’s year-long adult window to file sex abuse complaints, involves accusers Lili Bernard, Eden Tirl, Jewel Gittens, Jennifer Thompson and Cindra Ladd. The lawsuit alleges that each woman was abused or assaulted by the actor after meeting him on set or in other entertainment circles from the late 1960s to the 1990s.

“It was common knowledge that Bill Cosby regularly took young women into his dressing room and if you read the complaint you will see that there were instances where staff observed this and even encouraged the plaintiff to comply,” he said attorney Jordan Rutsky, who represents all five women.

“It was no hidden secret that Bill Cosby did these things,” Rutsky said. “It was just accepted.”

The lawsuit alleged that NBC, Kaufman Astoria Studios and Carsey-Werner Television “facilitated the sexual assault of women” by failing to review Cosby’s power and inclinations and failing to protect the women from being alone with him because they were of benefited from his work.

In at least some of the cases, the lawsuit states, Cosby first drugged the woman with drinks or pills he provided. A Cosby spokesman, Andrew Wyatt, said “prosecutors have resurfaced to file a frivolous civil lawsuit against Cosby.”

A spokeswoman for NBCUniversal, the network that aired The Cosby Show from 1984 to 1992, said the company would not comment on legal issues. Neither Kaufman Astoria nor Carsey-Werner immediately returned the phone or email messages left Tuesday afternoon for comment.

“This is not about justice for victims of alleged sexual assault, this is about money,” Wyatt said in a statement, echoing the defense arguments in Cosby’s retrial when the Pennsylvania jury found him guilty of drug abuse and sexual assault on a Temple University staffer convicted at his home in the Philadelphia area in 2004.

Cosby served nearly three years in prison before the state Supreme Court overturned the conviction, noting that he had made incriminating statements in a testimony about the encounter only after he believed he had immunity from prosecution. The trial judge and an intermediate appeals court had found no evidence of such immunity.

Bernard, who played Mrs Minifield on The Cosby Show in the early 1990s, also has a pending lawsuit against Cosby in New Jersey over an alleged encounter in Atlantic City.

Seven other accusers received a settlement from Cosby’s insurers after being convicted in Pennsylvania of a defamation lawsuit they filed in Massachusetts. Her lawsuit said that Cosby and his agents slandered her by dismissing her allegations of abuse.
