The Argentine government supports Cristina Kirchner for the Roads 1:35 cause

(CNN Spanish) – The public prosecutor’s office accuses Argentine Vice President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner of having led an association for state fraud as president between 2007 and 2015 by allegedly directing millions of euros for road works in the province of Santa Cruz.

In August, prosecutor Diego Luciani, in charge of the case known as “Vialidad,” asked for Fernández to be sentenced to 12 years in prison and permanently barred from public office. A possible conviction would not prevent Fernández de Kirchner from running in the next elections.

The verdict is expected to be available this Tuesday. Because of her position as vice president, Fernández de Kirchner enjoys immunity that protects her both legally and civilly in criminal proceedings, and she will not go to jail if convicted.

The ex-president also assures that this corruption allegation – the only one against the vice-president that has reached the hearing – has no basis and that it is a persecution against her and the political project she represents. In his words, he asserts that he is “not before a constitutional court, but before a media court firing squad” and that the verdict against him has already been written.

What do you accuse Cristina Fernández de Kirchner of?

During his two presidencies (2007-2011 and 2011-2015), Fernández is accused of running an illegal association to defraud public administration by siphoning funds from the state for his personal benefit or that of a third party.

Prosecutors say he, along with several former government officials, managed multimillion-dollar roadwork contracts that the complaint said were incomplete, overpriced and even unnecessary.

Fernández de Kirchner rejects these allegations.

The indictment specifically relates to 51 tenders in the province of Santa Cruz, where her late husband, former President Néstor Kirchner, was born and where both developed a good part of their professional and political careers before coming onto the national stage.

There is another fundamental figure in this indictment, that of Lázaro Báez, the former partner of the Kirchners, whom prosecutors say is the main beneficiary of this alleged fraud. In other words, that he would have been favored by directing the works and that he would later have benefited his alleged partners financially in other ways.

Prosecutor Luciani – who notes the beginning of the alleged fraud in Néstor Kirchner’s government – maintains that in order to siphon off funds, “overnight Lázaro Báez, a friend of the then president of the nation and business partner of his and his wife”.

Báez has already been sentenced to 12 years in prison for money laundering between 2003 and 2015, which was imposed in 2021 and which has been appealed to the Chamber of Cassation. Regarding this conviction, his lawyer explained that it was the result of an alleged “political and media persecution”. In a dialogue with CNN, Báez’s defense dismissed the allegations, claiming that the evidence used to confirm the illegal association belonged to a different file and that during the allegations it would show that prosecutors were lying with their arguments .

Thirteen people have been charged in the case, including the vice president. One of the most prominent involved is former Planning Minister Julio de Vido, whose lawyers responded that the allegations against him were untrue and that they would provide their answers in the relevant allegations.

Tension in front of Cristina Fernández de Kirchner’s house 4:15

could i go to jail

Fernández de Kirchner is protected by the same constitutional immunity as the president, so she cannot be arrested unless she is removed through impeachment. In other words, she would not go to jail, even if the court gave the green light to prosecutor Luciani’s 12-year petition, unless two-thirds of the House of Representatives blame her and an equal proportion of the senators find her guilty is available to the judiciary without any jurisdiction.

As long as she is not convicted, she would be fit to run for any elective office in the 2023 elections, such as for a senator, congressman or for the country’s presidency again. In each of these new positions she would again be protected by constitutional privileges.

In this regard, the Constitution provides that “No senator or representative shall be arrested from the date of his election until the date of his dismissal; unless he is caught in the act of committing a crime worthy of capital punishment, notorious or tormenting others”. (In the event that she was convicted, had no privileges and was forced to serve the sentence exists also the possibility of house arrest, since the law defines cases in which the judge can order the serving of the sentence at home and one of them is that the sentenced person is over 70. Cristina Fernández de Kirchner will meet them next February) .

Can Alberto Fernández forgive her?

The Constitution states that the President “may pardon or commute the sentences for crimes within the federal jurisdiction” except in cases where the prosecution originated with the House of Representatives.

After Luciani’s arrest warrant, the possibility of Fernández granting his vice president a pardon in the face of a conviction returned to the center of talks.

There are conflicting views in the legal field as to whether the mechanism could be applied in this particular case due to another article of Magna Carta dealing with crimes of corruption.

Another point being discussed is whether the President can pardon Fernández de Kirchner if a verdict has not yet been passed, because pardons can only be granted if there is a conviction. “The pardon is a power of the president that, from a constitutional point of view, is applied to people who have been convicted by a final judgment,” constitutional attorney Andrés Gil Domínguez told CNN Radio Argentina. However, there has long been debate as to whether it is possible for a person on trial, not convicted and presumed innocent, to be pardoned by a president because, in a sense, the presumption of innocence would be disregarded.

“This discussion took place in the 1990s, when Menem issued an omnibus pardon to supposedly pacify the country,” he recalled in an interview with María Laura Santillán, referring to the pardons given by the then president, of which military chiefs and The country’s leaders benefited from guerrillas, some of whom had no firm convictions.

“Then the Supreme Court (in a different composition) established that the pardon is a presidential power, always pursuing a goal of social pacification, acting both for those convicted with a final judgment and for the accused,” he said of what happened then in court for the benefits granted by Menem.

What remains is the request to condemn Cristina Fernández de Kirchner 7:19

President Fernández, for his part, has previously made this particular point. When he ran for office in 2019, he categorically ruled out a pardon. “If any fool thinks I’m going there (the Presidency) to pardon someone, he’s stupid (…). I don’t believe in pardons because pardons are an obstacle to monarchies. Presidents are not here to forgive anyone,” he said in an interview with Telenoche at the time.

However, the President described Prosecutor Luciani’s request as a prosecution after his decision became known, and hours later released a statement with his counterparts in Mexico, Colombia and Bolivia, assuring them that the prosecution against “the separated Cristina Fernández de Kirchner from public, political and electoral life”.

Ukraine calls for more help

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal calls for more support in the face of Russian missile strikes on power supplies. “We need two things to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe and a new big wave of refugees,” Schmyhal told newspapers of the German media group Funke.

“First of all, these are modern air and anti-missile defense systems that Western countries, including Germany, have at their disposal. The second concerns equipment and resources to restore damaged plants,” says Schmyhal. Russia has damaged about half of all power plants in Ukraine.

Study: Europe overtakes US in aid commitments for first time

According to a study, Europe has surpassed the United States in its financial aid to Ukraine for the first time since the beginning of the war. EU countries, together with EU institutions, are providing nearly €52 billion in military, financial and humanitarian aid, according to a study published today by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW). The commitments assumed by the USA amount to almost 48 billion euros.

The main reason for the changes is a financial support package for Ukraine decided by the EU for 2023 and worth 18 billion euros. The United States did not again expand its large overall aid commitments. Some funds released by Congress have since expired and were unused when the 2022 fiscal year ended.

The 38-year-old supermodel carries the BRCA1 gene mutation, which has been linked to an increased risk of several types of cancer. So he decided to protect himself like Angelina Jolie had done in the past

In the summer she announced that her fallopian tube and ovaries will be removed, today 38-year-old top model Bianca Balti announced to her fans that she is on 8 breasts. Angelina Jolie, who like the model discovered she was a carrier of the BRCA gene mutation, which is associated with a higher chance of developing breast, ovarian, prostate and pancreatic cancer, followed the same path almost a decade ago. Mom is being operated on because she loves life too much, Balti writes to her fans, citing the words she said to her daughters Matilde, 15, and Mia, 7. Without hiding their fear, but firmly convinced of their decision and the importance of renting out, people also know their story in order to contribute correct information on the subject.

BRCA mutations 1 and 2

Last September 1st, the model, originally from Lodi, organized a live video on her Istagram channel in collaboration with the aBRCAdabra association to answer the many questions that all people ask when they discover that they are carriers have a mutation in the genes BRCA1 or BRCA2. Scientific evidence has shown that an increasing number of malignancies in both men and women are associated with mutations in the BRCA genes. Knowing whether you are a carrier of the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation helps patients diagnosed with breast, ovarian, prostate and pancreatic cancer to determine the most effective therapies and guide the therapeutic decision, both on the surgical front and at the choice of different drugs — explains Alberta Ferrari, coordinator of the technical-scientific committee of aBRCAdaBRA onlus, who answered live to Bianca and the participants -. And for healthy family members who are at higher risk of developing the disease, it is important to evaluate the most appropriate prevention strategies in each individual case. Before the test, the healthy person must undergo a genetic-oncological consultation with a specialist, but the test is not reimbursed uniformly throughout Italy and risk-reducing surgeries (that is, preventive removal of the breast, uterus and ovaries) that we do not include the lea (basics of support), so in practice the hospital carries them out at its own expense as the NHS expects no reimbursement, recalls aBRCAdabra President Ornella Campanella.

What changes for those with the mutation

What are the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes? The BRCA genes are present in each of us – explains Antonio Russo, full professor of medical oncology at the University of Palermo and coordinator of the national guidelines on hereditary tumors of the Italian Association for Medical Oncology (Aiom) -. However, some people have a kind of “abnormal version” that can translate into an increased risk of cancer in both men and women. Mutations affecting both of these genes can be transmitted to children, and tumors tend to appear earlier in those who carry the mutation. There are very specific criteria for sending potential “healthy carriers” to oncology genetic counseling, and it is important that all eligible individuals have free access to the tests. Intercepting a healthy carrier (that is, a person who reacts positively to the BRCA test but does not have cancer) allows us to offer him two prevention strategies: The first, a close surveillance program with some diagnostic tests, even every six months be carried out, unlike those of the screening to which the general population undergoes, which in some cases (e.g. in breast cancer) makes it possible to detect the possible appearance of a tumor at a very early stage, making the prognosis of the disease strong can change. The other way is to offer preventive breast surgery (mastectomy) and possibly also fallopian tubes and ovaries (annexectomy), or to remove those organs in which there is a high probability of new growth.

The decision to undergo preventive surgery

The surgical options require a multidisciplinary approach, which is possible in many treatment centers in Italy (such as the breast centers and specialized centers for ovarian surgery) – says Alberta Ferrari, Deputy Director of Breast Surgery at the Polyclinic San Matteo in Pavia -. Of course, the woman’s decision must take into account her life choices, her personal and family planning, the desire for motherhood, the consequences of early menopause, as well as aesthetic and, of course, psychological aspects. The interested party must receive all the correct information so that they can freely decide when and if they wish to undergo risk-reducing surgery, knowing that at present the only strategy is able to reduce the risk of tumorigenesis in these two organs and in particular in the ovary, where to this day not even the possibility of early detection has come into focus. Surely the preventive surgery is a strong and frightening decision, as Balti tells himself: I am undergoing a preventive double mastectomy. Because I can’t afford to get sick as I carry the economic responsibility for everything on my shoulders alone. Because I want my girls to find the strength within me to act if they too are diagnosed one day. Because I love life too much not to do whatever it takes to preserve it. I was proud to set a date and impatient to wait. But now that the time has come, I don’t feel like it anymore. i feel fragile Fear of being dependent on others. Afraid of the pain she will feel. Disheartened at having to give up a part of my body that to this day defines my femininity.

Washington will greatly increase its gas supplies to the UK

The United States will sharply increase its gas supplies to the United Kingdom under an Energy Security Partnership deal announced on Wednesday.

“Over the next few years, the United States plans to more than double the volume of gas exported to Britain compared to 2021 to ensure security of supply and reduce price volatility,” British said in a government statement.

Washington is therefore targeting exports of 9 to 10 billion cubic meters of liquefied natural gas over the course of the next year through British terminals, in particular with the aim of “filling gas storage facilities”, the text goes on to say.

Under the new partnership, the United States and the United Kingdom will “work to reduce global dependence on Russian energy exports, stabilize energy markets, and strengthen their cooperation on energy efficiency, nuclear power and renewable energy,” the statement said press release.

Those efforts are being spearheaded by a new US-British action group, which includes senior British and US officials, which is due to meet for the first time on Thursday.

Energy prices have skyrocketed since the economy reopened after the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic and have continued to accelerate since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, causing inflation to skyrocket in many regions of the world a cost crisis led life.

Elon Musk’s Neuralink to be investigated for animal cruelty

Comment on this story

comment

Elon Musk’s medical technology company Neuralink is reportedly under investigation by federal authorities over allegations that the tech mogul’s pressure to report results led to barbaric and botched surgeries on monkeys, sheep and pigs involved in scientific tests.

Neuralink, which is trying to make a brain implant that could help paralyzed people regain limb function and treat neurological conditions, has killed around 1,500 animals involved in tests since 2018, Portal reported. The Office of the Inspector General of the Department of Agriculture launched an investigation under the Animal Welfare Act in recent months, the intelligence service reported.

Neuralink officials did not respond to a request for comment. The Department of Agriculture referred questions to the Office of the Inspector General. Amy Lowenthal, the assistant attorney general for the inspector general, said in an email that the agency “neither confirms nor denies the existence of such an investigation.”

In its report, Portal cites reviews of internal records, interviews with sources with knowledge of the company’s operations and people with knowledge of the investigation. The Washington Post has not confirmed the existence of an investigation or the number of animals killed.

Musk is already embroiled in controversy over his recent takeover of Twitter. Shortly after privatizing the platform for $44 billion, he laid off half his workforce and then saw hundreds more workers leave after vowing to enforce a “hardcore” work environment. Days later, he allowed former President Donald Trump and leader of hate groups back onto the platform after previous suspensions.

Elon Musk’s ‘Twitter Files’ ignite divisions but haven’t changed minds

Musk’s electric-car maker Tesla is also facing a lawsuit from an employee alleging rampant sexual harassment stemming from Musk’s intense focus on productivity and a laissez-faire attitude toward company culture. Tesla has denied the allegations.

Neuralink employees told Portal that Musk had urged researchers to speed up their work, prompting some to rush experiments on animals in their care.

“In general, we just don’t move fast enough. It’s driving me insane!” Musk wrote in a February email obtained by the news service.

Medical research companies typically conduct animal testing to ensure the technology is safe enough for human testing. After these procedures, the animals are often euthanized to allow researchers to perform autopsies and evaluate the technology.

But animal testing is strictly regulated by federal law to prevent undue pain and suffering. Employees claimed to Portal that the number of animals killed was excessive due to human error caused by Musk’s demands – including an episode in which 86 pigs and two monkeys died after botched tests.

In early 2022, Portal reported, an employee wrote an angry message to colleagues complaining about operations being “hack jobs.” In February, an animal rights group filed a complaint with federal authorities over surgeries that resulted in the deaths of six monkeys.

A long mysterious object emerges from the sand

A long mysterious object emerges from the sand

Not all discoveries are created equal. Some have required years of excavation, others are pure coincidence, and still others come from the seabed. But what happened recently is very special: by Sand appeared a mysterious and long object.

The discovery happened in Daytona Beach Shores

We are in Shores of Daytona Beach, a city in the United States of America in Florida, more specifically in Volusia County. And right here a long object of wood and metal emerged from the sand. The residents of the area were the first to discover it due to the low tide.

As explained by county officials who oThe object has not yet been identified. Something very special, also created after the massive erosion caused by Hurricane Nicole, which sadly hit Florida last month, and Hurricane Ian, which hit the state in September.

A discovery that has inevitably aroused the curiosity of the residents, who have formulated various – and sometimes extravagant – theories. For example, some think of it as a barrier, others as an old sunken pier, still others as a grandstand for spectators of past sporting events and much more.

Statements about this discovery

You can read the words in the local newspapers Tammy Malphurs, Deputy Head of Security at Volusia Beach: “We haven’t seen such erosion in a long time. We’re still not sure what it is, but it’s a large piece of debris, probably 25 to 30 meters long.”

As reported by the New York Times, the property is not currently fenced in because it is inundated with water at high tide. “The state underwater archeology team has been advised to investigate further,” he said Kevin HauptmanGovernment Spokesman for Volusia County.

what will happen now

During this week, the archaeologists will examine what has just surfaced, and only after their analysis can we form a picture of what this particular object, hitherto hidden in the sand, really is.

An event that is nothing new to the Florida shores, however, as it is not the first time that old wrecks or treasures have resurfaced from the beach. For example, in 2020, a couple walking on Crescent Beach noticed some beams and bolts that later turned out to be the remains of an ancient ship, possibly the Caroline Eddy, that plied the Atlantic in the 19th century.

However, in 2021, a high school student discovered a rare 1715 gold coin south of Turtle Trail Beach and not long after, a man unearthed a diamond ring worth about $40,000 Saint Augustine.

All that remains is to await the archaeologists’ investigations to find out more, because what happened, as Ms Malphurs, a witness, said: “a mystery. A lot of people even think it’s some kind of old ship.” He then continued, “Every once in a while something pops up and we can usually tell what it is. But this time we just can’t confirm it.” And we add: We hope that the analyzes carried out can provide more information on this strange object just emerged from the sand.
