Six Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks in the West Bank

Six Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks in the West Bank

Six Palestinians were killed and nearly 20 others injured in raids by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank, mainly in the city of Nablus, early Tuesday, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.

The ministry initially reported “three dead and 19 injured, three seriously injured” in Nablus. He later added that a fourth Palestinian was also killed by Israeli fire in Nablus and that two other Palestinians were killed in Ramallah, the seat of Mahmoud Abbas’ Palestinian Authority in the center of the West Bank, and in the village of Nabi Saleh.

The Israeli army did not comment on this assessment, but confirmed that it had carried out a large-scale operation with the police against the “headquarters and a weapons-manufacturing workshop” of the new group of Palestinian fighters, nicknamed “The Lion’s Den”. Old town of Nablus. During this operation, “several armed suspects were shot dead,” the army said.

Violence has increased in recent months in the northern West Bank, Palestinian territory occupied by the Jewish state since 1967, particularly in the areas of Nablus and Jenin, strongholds of armed groups where Israeli soldiers are stepping up operations following deadly anti-Israeli attacks have since March.

These raids, often punctuated by clashes with the Palestinian population, left more than a hundred Palestinian dead, the highest number in the West Bank in almost seven years, according to the UN. According to a report compiled by AFP, 29 Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers have been killed since the beginning of the month.

On Tuesday morning, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid told Israeli public radio Kan that one of the “Lion’s Den” leaders, Wadih Al Houh, had been killed.

“They need to know that wherever they are, we will reach them, Israel will never stop acting for their security and we will do what needs to be done, the goal is to reduce terrorism and ensure that.” it does not affect Israeli citizens.”

For his part, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is “making urgent contacts in Nablus to put an end to this aggression against our people,” his spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeinah said in a statement.

“war crimes”

In recent weeks, a group of young Palestinian fighters, some affiliated with well-known groups such as Fatah, Hamas or Islamic Jihad and others not, have begun conducting anti-Israeli operations from Nablus, a major city in the northern occupied West Bank.

The new group, christened “Areen al-Ossoud” in Arabic, “Lion’s Den” in French, in honor of Ibrahim al-Nabulsi, a young fighter nicknamed the “Lion of Nablus” who was killed by Israeli forces in early August was notable claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on an Israeli soldier two weeks ago in the occupied West Bank.

On Tuesday, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad said in a statement that its “fighters have engaged in violent clashes” with Israeli forces in Nablus and threatened Israel with retaliation “against these crimes” there.

In doing so, the Israeli army tightened the noose around Nablus, establishing checks to identify those who had left the city and constantly monitoring the skies with observation drones.

Separately, human rights organization Amnesty International on Tuesday called for an International Criminal Court (ICC) investigation into possible “war crimes” committed by Israeli and Palestinian militants during the escalation in the Gaza Strip in August.

At least 49 Palestinians, including combatants but also civilians and children, died August 5-7 in a confrontation between the Israeli army and the Islamic Jihad group in Gaza, an enclave under Israeli blockade since 2007 and politically and geographically separated from the West Bank Cut.

Figure skating: Sherbrooke coach banned for misconduct

A Sherbrooke figure skating coach was suspended by Skate Canada Monday for a year for misconduct.

Marie-Christine Grenier, who has been teaching figure skating to children and teenagers at the Sherbrooke Artistic Skating Club (CPA) for the last few days, was added to the list of suspended people yesterday.

“I’m very surprised,” said Lucie Bouffard, one of the people in charge of the CPA, with emotion. She is also the mother of the suspended coach.

“The case is in the hands of the lawyers, that’s all I can say,” she added.

Ms Bouffard nonetheless confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that the organization would update athletes and parents on the coach’s suspension in the hours that followed.

accused acts

According to our information, an investigation has been conducted and people in the skate community have been questioned about Ms. Grenier’s practices over the past few weeks. However, the nature of the misconduct could not be determined at this time.

Although Skate Canada boasts that it maintains an up-to-date list of expelled and suspended coaches, the organization does not inform its members or the media of the nature of the wrongdoing. It is not clear whether the alleged actions took place in the arena, in the context of training or competition. The organization also does not give details of the investigation.

Skate Canada was reached by email on Tuesday and said from the start that it takes issues of harassment, bullying and abuse seriously. “We have a comprehensive process in place to deal with allegations of such conduct,” it said.

Communications Director Emma Bowie then confirms that “Marie-Christine Grenier is not eligible to participate in any activities attended by Skate Canada registrants or members during the period of her suspension from October 24, 2022 to October 23, 2023”. And that Skate Canada, in accordance with its policy, “and to respect the confidentiality of the complainant, will not disclose any further details.”

Other Quebecers on the list

On the site of Patinage Québec, the organization that monitors Quebec skaters and coaches affiliated with Skate Canada, we state via email that they “at the end of yesterday announced Marie-Christine Grenier’s one-year suspension because of was informed of misconduct. The managers of the club and the programs in which she trained were also informed of the suspension,” wrote Any-Claude Dion, general manager.

Regarding the investigation and the nature of the complaint, Patinage Québec is returning the ball to Skate Canada, even though the coach is part of its organization.

In recent years, three Quebec coaches have been expelled for misconduct, according to the list posted online by Skate Canada. The list of “provisional suspensions” includes two Quebec coaches, Marie-Christine Grenier and Richard Gauthier. When it is still impossible to discern the nature of Ms Grenier’s wrongdoing, Richard Gauthier faces charges of gross lewdness, sexual assault and indecent assault on a skater. The court case is still ongoing. For its part, Skate Canada lists on its website that Richard Gauthier’s violation is an “alleged misconduct.”

John Fetterman and Dr. Oz compete against each other

John Fetterman and Dr. Oz square off: Democratic Senate hopeful says he faces ‘awkward pauses’ and errors as he recovers from stroke – and calls his Republican opponent’s attacks ‘mean’

  • Pennsylvania Senate hopefuls Democrat John Fetterman and Republican Dr. Mehmet Oz, face each other in their only debate on Tuesday evening in Harrisburg
  • Ahead of Tuesday’s debate, Fetterman’s campaign dampened expectations in a memo due to his use of subtitles

Pennsylvania Senate hopefuls John Fetterman, the state’s Democratic Lieutenant Governor, and Republican, television personality Dr. Mehmet Oz, opened their only debate in Harrisburg on Tuesday evening.

Ahead of Tuesday’s debate, Fetterman’s campaign dampened expectations in a memo, noting that there could be “delays and errors” and “awkward pauses” due to the Democrat’s use of closed captions.

Fetterman uses the technology, with the questions being hand-transcribed by the debate staff due to his auditory processing problem, a holdover from the stroke he suffered in May.

The memo also called out the Oz campaign for attacks on Fetterman’s health, largely through the Republican’s campaign staff.

“Oz will try to play the nice doctor on Tuesday night, but his campaign’s attacks on John’s health have been consistently mean and cruel,” the memo reads. “We will not forget that this is the same ‘Doctor’ whose campaign poked fun at John’s use of closed captioning technology for needing toilet breaks and medical staff nearby and he would not have had a stroke if he had eaten vegetables. ”

Oz staffers made the comments when a debate was being heard in September, but it never happened, as Fetterman backed down and said the Republican’s team mocked a stroke victim.

The Harrisburg stage will be the only time the two candidates will meet — as absentee ballots have already been mailed to Pennsylvania voters.

Fetterman has consistently had a small advantage in polls that persists, although several recent polls show it’s narrow.

On Tuesday, a CBS News poll put the two candidates two points apart.

According to the poll, 51 percent of Keystone State’s likely voters support Fetterman, compared to 49 percent who support Oz.

The lead of the democratic populist is well within the margin of error of 4.4 percent.

Pennsylvania voters are excited to see how the match will play out, CBS News poll shows.

More than 60 percent of respondents indicated that they would like to turn on at least “something”.

The poll was conducted from October 21-24, up until the night before the debate.

In addition to his auditory processing disorder, the stroke has also caused Fetterman to occasionally stumble over his words and pause more frequently when speaking.

A new poll conducted up to the day before the first and only debate by John Fetterman and Mehmet Oz shows the Democrat's lead over his Trump-backed rival is just 2 percent

A new poll conducted up to the day before the first and only debate by John Fetterman and Mehmet Oz shows the Democrat’s lead over his Trump-backed rival is just 2 percent

But voters tonight aren’t interested in hearing about it, according to the poll.

They also have no interest in further attacks on Oz’s Pennsylvania residence versus his family home in New Jersey, which was a cornerstone of Fetterman’s campaign.

54 percent of registered voters told CBS they don’t seek discussions about Fetterman’s health.

Likewise, 57 percent said they no longer need to hear about where Oz lives.

But more than nine in 10 Pennsylvanians surveyed said they would like candidates to speak about the economy and their views on crime and the police.

That could be in Oz’s favor tonight — Americans’ worries about the economy and rising inflation have been a big campaign issue for Republicans across the country, as rising opinion polls show voters trust Republicans slightly more than Democrats, both in relation to the economy as well as to crime.

Cats recognize when their owner is talking to them and to strangers

You might think you bond with your cat – but now there’s scientific evidence to back it up.

In a new study published Tuesday in the journal Animal Cognition, researchers at Université Paris Nanterre in France found cats can actually recognize their owners’ voices when they talk to them. The cats can also tell the difference between their owner’s voice and that of complete strangers. The experiment suggests something many pet owners already know: you and your cat can form strong bonds over time.

“These findings bring a new dimension to the consideration of the human-cat relationship as they imply the development of a specific experiential communication in human-cat dyads,” the study authors wrote.

The researchers recruited 16 pet cats to see how the animals responded to the tone of voice that spoke to them – or cat-directed speech (CDS) – and the tone of voice that spoke to other humans – or adult-directed speech (ADS). They also wanted to see how the cats responded to the language of strangers compared to their individual owners.

Using recorded voices of owners and strangers saying different phrases in CDS and ADS, the study authors found that the animals were able to distinguish between the phrases spoken by their owners. When they heard the familiar voices, the cats responded more strongly, for example by directing their ears to the voice, moving around the room, and choosing their pupils. However, when a stranger spoke, they displayed diminished behavior.

The authors of the study found similar results for sound. When their owners spoke in ADS, there was less activity with the cats. However, when their owner spoke in CDS, the behavioral intensity increased. This increase did not occur when strangers spoke in both keys.

So this suggests that cats know if their owners are talking to them—and especially when they’re using the cooing baby talk that so many pet parents use around their furballs. This means the more time you spend with your cats, the stronger your bond with them will become.

The authors of the study note that the sample size was small and therefore caution against generalizations that may result from the study. However, the results still show that your cats know you fairly well, even though they can be aloof and distant. So be sure to give them some catnip or some salami as a treat.

Stock futures fall after Alphabet reports earnings losses

A trader works on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on October 7, 2022.

U.S. stock futures fell Tuesday night after Alphabet’s disappointing third-quarter results marked a foreboding start to Big Tech’s gains this week.

Dow Jones Industrial Average futures fell 75 points, or 0.24%. S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures were down 0.96% and 2.04%, respectively.

Shares of Google parent Alphabet fell more than 6% in extended trading. The online search giant missed expectations for revenue and earnings. Alphabet also reported a drop in YouTube ad revenue, prompting investors to examine the prospects for other tech companies that rely on ad spending.

“I think we need to take an overall perspective and realize that nobody in this market is really immune, there’s a slowdown in digital ad spend,” Sand Hill Global Advisors’ Brenda Vingiello said on Tuesday on CNBC’s Closing Bell : Overtime”.

Other mega-cap tech stocks fell in after-hours trading on the report. Meta Platforms shares fell 4.1% and Amazon slipped 2%.

Meanwhile, Microsoft slipped about 3% after the tech giant reported weaker-than-expected cloud revenue in its most recent quarterly results, despite beating earnings and revenue estimates.

During Tuesday’s regular session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 337 points, or about 1.1%. The S&P 500 rose 1.6%, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 2.2%. These gains against a backdrop of a fall in bond yields helped the major averages continue their rally for the third straight day.

Traders are expecting earnings from Boeing and Kraft Heinz Tuesday before the bell, as well as more big-tech earnings from Meta after the bell.

They also pay attention to the latest economic data on weekly mortgage applications, wholesale inventories and new home sales.

Marc Resteghini Head of Series Development Out at Amazon

Marc Resteghini, Head of Series Development, Out at Amazon

Amazon Studios is making a big shift in its TV leadership ranks.

Marc Resteghini, head of series development and eight-year veteran at Amazon, is leaving the e-commerce giant/streamer.

The executive, who first joined Amazon’s drama team in 2014 when the streamer’s entertainment offering was overseen by former boss Roy Price, has played a key role on the company’s original, having overseen production on series like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Jack Ryan, Patriot, The Summer I Turned Pretty, The Terminal List, Underground Railroad and Them, among others.

Sources say TV boss Vernon Sanders is restructuring his ranks after being tapped last year as a lone executive overseeing the TV crew. With the reorganization, Resteghini’s job has been eliminated and his responsibilities will be split between Nick Pepper, the studio’s Head of Creative Content, and Laura Lancaster, Head of Series. Both will report to Sanders.

Amazon officials have dismissed the comment.

The news comes after Amazon recently packaged the first of a planned five-season series of The Lord of the Rings TV series in a package that cost the company an estimated $1 billion if you own the rights to the ownership, production and marketing costs are taken into account.

Sources also point out that Resteghini, whose fingerprints can be found all over Amazon’s most successful program, is negotiating a production deal with the streamer.

Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, who recently appointed Sanders as sole TV boss after tasking former co-head Albert Cheng to focus on his duties as chief operating officer, has been on the streamer’s creative ranks since its acquisition several times restructured repressed price. In early 2021, Salke reorganized her team into an end-to-end leadership built on development, series and IP/talent management. Then-drama head Resteghini was promoted to US/global head of development at the time, as Amazon also hired Alcons Lancaster to head the series.

For his part, Pepper joined Amazon a month after the reorganization that saw Resteghini rise with the former legendary TV exec to the newly created role of head of studio content.
