Ukraine trolls Russia for donating ‘thousands of tons’ of ammunition, keeps winning

Ukraine’s defense ministry has poked fun at the Russian military, saying Ukraine has seized huge finds of ammunition that it promises to use against invading forces.

In a sarcastic Twitter post on Friday, the ministry said it had received “thousands of tons of ammunition as gifts” from the Russian armed forces over the past week. The ministry’s post follows reports of Ukraine’s success in retaking occupied lands in the south and north-east of the country. But the “gift” of the confiscated ammunition will be returned to Russia, the ministry added.

“Please note that we do not accept gifts from murderers, torturers, looters or rapists,” the ministry said in its post. “In the next few days we will return everything except the last shell.”

Abandoned Russian Munitions

Ukrainian forces have regained control of most of northeastern Kharkiv province, including the nearby transport hub of Izyum, and also advanced around the southern city of Kherson.

So said the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a US-based think tank tracking the progress of the counterattack in this week that Ukrainian forces have retaken about 3,475 square miles (nearly three times the size of Rhode Island) across the country since August 29.

Ukrainian forces took control of Kupyansk, a city in Kharkiv province on Friday when they met Russian resistance as they advanced east of the Oskil River, according to ISW. In the adjacent Russian administrative district of Belgorod, Ukrainian forces continued shelling, reportedly hitting a power substation, ISW said.

The British Ministry of Defence said in his intelligence update this week that Russian forces were leaving behind “high quality equipment” necessary for their “artillery-focused style of warfare.” The equipment left behind included at least one ZOOPARK counter-battery radar and at least one IV14 artillery command and control vehicle, according to the ministry.

“Such a task underscores the disorganized withdrawal of some Russian units and likely localized collapses in command and control,” the British department said.

Air Force Brigadier General Pat Ryder, a Pentagon spokesman, called Ukraine’s territorial gains “significant” during a news conference on Friday.

“What we’re assessing is that the Ukrainians are consolidating their gains after retaking significant territory and the Russians are trying to shore up their defenses after being pushed back,” Ryder said, referring to Ukraine’s achievements in the north .

In the south of the country, Ukrainian forces are taking what Ryder described as a “deliberate, calculated forward movement” while the Russians continue to try to hold that line.

Ukrainian forces attacked Russia’s administrative headquarters in Kherson on Friday, likely using US-provided High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or “HIMARS,” according to ISW.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday he remains committed to the war effort and focused on the Kremlin’s main goal of “liberating the entire Donbass territory” in eastern Ukraine.

Newsweek has reached out to the Russian Defense Ministry for comment.

Air traffic control strike affects hundreds of European flights

(CNN) – Hundreds of flights have been canceled and thousands of passengers forced to change their plans as French air traffic controllers took industrial action over pay on Friday.

Europe’s largest airline, Ryanair, suspended 420 of its flights across Europe as the 24-hour strike disrupted connections from airports across the continent. Rival low-cost airline EasyJet warned of serious delays and disruptions.

Members of France’s Syndicat National des Contrôleurs du Trafic Aérien (SNCTA), the country’s main traffic controllers union, began striking Friday at 6:00 a.m. Central European Time (12:00 a.m. ET). Knock-on disruptions are expected to last through Monday.

The union said it was calling the action after negotiations with the government over wage increases in line with inflation stalled.

“After several months of negotiations in order to obtain fair and adjusted answers, the SNCTA deplores … the lack of concrete elements and guarantees on the part of the authorities,” it said in a statement.

More delays

French aviation authorities warned that up to 50% of flights could be affected by the strike.

Paris Aéroport, which owns and manages 14 civil airports and aerodromes in the Île-de-France (Paris) region, warned on Thursday to expect “significant” delays and cancellations in arrivals and departures.

Many flights over French airspace were also affected. Barcelona Airport’s departures board showed more than 50 delayed or canceled flights after midday on Friday. In Germany, Hamburg Airport said 48 out of 251 flights on the day had been canceled by midday local time and more delays and cancellations were possible.

Earlier in the week, France’s Directorate-General for Civil Aviation warned that up to 50% of the country’s flights could be affected, urging passengers to contact airlines and postpone the trip.

The SNCTA has announced that a strike planned for September 28 could go ahead.

Disruptions were also expected on Monday as London’s Heathrow Airport said some flights would be canceled or delayed to keep airspace still during events marking Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.

CNN’s Arnaud Siad and Peter Taggart contributed to this story.

Marvel just replaced a key character from Netflix Daredevil in She-Hulk Episode 5 – The Direct

From the unexpected relationship between Madisynn and Wong to the long-awaited social media domination of Jameela Jamil’s Titania, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law has delivered shocking revelation after shocking revelation over its first five episodes. But with every week that goes by, before his much-anticipated comeback, another name has been on the minds of MCU fans: Daredevil.

Warning – the rest of this article contains spoilers for Episode 5 of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

Excitingly, the first glimpses of Matt Murdock’s red-clad alter ego came on screen in Episode 5, as the camera panned past his red outfit and onto the new gold-horned mask he will wear in a later episode. While the jury is still out on where Matt himself is, fans now know his suit is being made by Luke Jacobson, the very person who helped Jen upgrade her own wardrobe.

On one hand, it’s an exciting development as fans know that the Man Without Fear is finally getting closer to his first action in a superhero outfit on Disney+, shown off by the She-Hulk promotional tour. It also calls into question some of his potential past, as debates still rage over whether Charlie Cox’s work as Daredevil on Netflix is canon for the MCU – thanks in particular to a character who was replaced in Episode 5.

MCU trades Daredevil Suit Designer for She-Hulk’s

Episode 5 of Marvel Studios’ She-Hulk: Attorney at Law confirmed that Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock is now working with Los Angeles-based designer Luke Jacobson on his Daredevil costume.

That suit was teased in the final seconds of the episode, when the camera zoomed in on a package containing a new gold mask with horns on top. This is the same mask that fans saw Daredevil use in a few seconds of footage from trailers that premiered during She-Hulk’s promotional run.

With Murdock and Jacobson now working together, this suggests that LA designer Melvin Potter took over from the Daredevil series to make Matt Murdock’s suit, should the Netflix original be considered canon with the MCU.

Melvin Potter, daredevil
Netflix

Potter was the character who originally made Daredevil’s main suit at the end of Season 1, although things took a turn for the worse later in the series. He was forced by Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin to make a new suit for Ben Poindexter/Bullseye to frame Matt Murdock, though Potter eventually told Murdock about the plan.

The costume designer was eventually caught by the FBI for a parole violation, while Murdock defeated Bullseye and Kingpin, and Potter ended up going to jail.

Should this storyline be canon in the MCU, that would likely be why Murdock goes to Jacobson to look for a new Daredevil suit. Potter wouldn’t be able to make one out of jail and it would also give him a chance to get something new to try and break away from the bullseye incident.

Daredevil’s bleak future in the MCU

She-Hulk will mark the first time fans will see Daredevil outside of his natural habitat in New York City as he interacts with Marvel’s other leading West Coast attorney. And once it comes, some of those questions about Daredevil’s canon status may be answered by Netflix, but this episode still leaves those mysteries open.

It makes perfect sense why Matt Murdock would need to find a new suit designer when Melvin Potter is still in prison, although what exactly drives him to fly 3000 miles from his home in Hell’s Kitchen is still unknown. Another point is that if he chose that travel option, it would be difficult to get a superhero costume like his through airport security, although the trip would likely be something he couldn’t handle due to his poor eyesight.

On the other hand, this could simply be a way to give the man a fresh start in the MCU without fear, as he could be early in his run as a hero or simply get an outfit upgrade. And in the end, that question might not even be a question to be answered in She-Hulk’s solo series, as Daredevil will only be appearing for one of the next four episodes.

Hopefully more of these questions will be answered for Cox’s fan-favorite hero, especially at just over 18 months before he embarks on his next solo journey in Daredevil: Born Again. With this development being so fresh, things could change drastically for the blind attorney as his tenure in the MCU progresses.

The first five episodes of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law are available to stream on Disney+.

Florida State Seminoles lose QB Jordan Travis to injury, rally to beat Louisville

Without several key players, including quarterback Jordan Travis, Florida State held on to a 35-31 win over Louisville on Friday to go 3-0 for the first time since 2015.

Travis, who led FSU to an angry win over LSU in Week 1, opened the game by completing his first 11 passes but appeared to injure his right knee trying to escape a sack in the second quarter.

Head coach Mike Norvell didn’t update Travis’ prediction after the game, other than saying he would be rated when the team returned to Tallahassee.

Tate Rodemaker, standing in for the injured Travis, ended the first half with an ugly interception, but when he emerged from the dressing room – with Travis on the sidelines on crutches – he looked like a different player.

Rodemaker sparked a 10-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to open the second half and level the score at 21; then his 69-yard throw to Johnny Wilson equalized again with 28 in the fourth quarter. The FSU ground play led the offense to a final TD drive that culminated with another Rodemaker TD pass to Wilson that turned out to be the difference in the game. Wilson had seven catches for 149 yards and two TDs.

Rodemaker finished 6 of 10 with a pass for 109 yards and two TDs.

“I knew we could win with Tate,” Norvell said. “I’ve seen it in practice, seen how he worked, seen how much has been invested to be prepared for the moment. He was put in a challenging situation on the street. But he went out and responded.”

Travis was seen on the field after the game, walking without crutches and hugging Rodemaker to celebrate the win.

Florida State is now 9-3 in the last 12 games started by Travis. For the season, Travis is 44 of 65 with 624 yards and four touchdowns.

Alongside Travis, FSU lost second-half edge rusher Jared Verse to an apparent knee injury, and defensive tackle Fabien Lovett did not travel with the team through injury.

“Guys fell, some didn’t make the trip – some of our best football players,” Norvell said. “But tonight our boys fought their way to victory.”

When asked after the game how many players would need screening due to an injury on Saturday, Norvell quipped, “All.”

Florida State hosts Boston College in Week 4.

Floods in Italy: After the death of ten people, the government’s lack of anticipation is denounced

Residents of the village of Pianello di Ostra (Italy), the day after the deluge that hit the region on September 16, 2022. Residents of the village of Pianello di Ostra (Italy), the day after the deluge that hit the region, September 16, 2022. ALESSANDRO DI MEO / AFP

“God help us. It is a message of desperation that Riccardo Pasqualini wrote on Facebook on the night of Thursday 15 to Friday 16 September. The mayor of Barbara, a town of 1,257 inhabitants, could only helplessly watching the deluge descend on this small town in the Marche region of eastern Italy In his message, Riccardo Pasqualini urged residents to stay at home and not take their cars under any circumstances, at the risk of losing their lives.

These storms surprised again by their violence. In just six hours, more than 400 millimeters of rain fell in the region, which is a third of the annual amount of rain, said civil protection chief Fabrizio Curzio, who was on site on Friday morning. In the village of Cantiano, about fifty kilometers from Barbara, further inland, some residents filmed themselves with water up to their waists. In many videos shared on social networks, we see cars washed away by mud rivers.

The toll of this new extreme climatic episode is very high. The civil defense has actually identified ten dead and three missing, including two children. Around 50 people were also hospitalized and 150 others had to be evacuated from their homes.

Almost 200 firefighters were mobilized to help the victims. Some help came from the neighboring regions of Abruzzo and Emilia-Romagna. The pictures showed them aboard inflatable boats going up lanes that turned into streams. The army also provided two helicopters to help with the rescue operations.

“Seven violent climate phenomena since July”

A few hours after the tragedy, stunning images from Europe’s Copernicus satellite showed the magnitude of the violence of these storms and the destructive power of the gully. From space we can actually see that the mudslides entered the Adriatic Sea up to 80 kilometers offshore.

These events are just one more episode in a long line of climate catastrophes that this area of the Mediterranean basin has been experiencing since the beginning of summer. “It’s a situation very similar to the violent storms that swept over Corsica on August 18, as well as Liguria and Tuscany,” said climatologist Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorological Society, who is asking for better information. “Italians are not educated on how to behave in the face of these violent and sudden facts,” he notes.

Few stayed outside! Who was not invited to the funeral of Elizabeth II

Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral is scheduled for next Monday. This will be one of the biggest events of the year. As such, it is expected that several royalty and politicians from around the world will be in attendance.

Invitations have already been sent out and an estimated 500 heads of state and foreign dignitaries will attend the event.

However, as with any event, there are those who have not been invited.

According to the BBC, representatives from Syria, Venezuela and Afghanistan were not invited. Since the UK does not have full diplomatic relations with these countries, the national leaders of these nations are left out.

Apart from them, no one from Russia and Belarus was invited. Diplomatic ties between Britain and Russia have collapsed since the invasion of Ukraine, and a spokesman for the Russian President said Vladimir Putin was “not considering” attending the funeral.

In the case of Belarus, the diplomatic break was also due to the war in Ukraine. The invasion was partially launched from the territory of this country, whose President Aleksandr Lukashenko is a close ally of Putin.

Another country that did not invite representatives due to conflicts was Myanmar. Britain has significantly reduced its diplomatic presence there since a military coup last year.

Finally, North Korea and Nicaragua were asked to send only ambassadors, not heads of state.
