Ukrainian-US envoy tells Biden that “blood will be on his hands” if he does not send more weapons

A Ukrainian police officer lost his entire family, including his six-year-old daughter and six-week-old son, after they were shot dead along with their mother and grandparents that day. Russia invaded, it appeared today.

Oleg Fedko, 30, was on patrol when his loved ones were killed when soldiers opened fire on two cars on their way near Nova Kakhovka in southern Ukraine.

Ukrainian media report that Russian soldiers shot the family in the bombed Ukrainian region of Kherson, north of Crimea.

Six-year-old Sofia Fedko and her brother Ivan, who was just six weeks old, died with their mother Irina, 27, and two grandparents, both 56, on the first day of the conflict last Thursday.

Oleg’s brother Denis Fedko said he was talking to his mother on the phone at the time. “I talked to my mother,” he said, adding: “I kept hearing my mother shout that she had children. [in the car] and “How can you [do that]? ”.

Describing when the attack began, he said: “I heard little Vanya [Ivan] he cried loudly. He was only a month and a half old. And then I heard shots. Then there was silence, then shots again. There were two shots, each two to three shots long. I realized they were finishing them. ”

Reports say that Oleg Sr. was forced to take family members because his son was on duty.

On the same day, February 24, Russian troops entered the village of Veseloe, about 40 miles from the town of Kherson, and the family reportedly decided to flee the Russians again.

Local reports say that the first car managed to pass in front of Russian soldiers in the village of Veseloe. The second car didn’t have time.

The policeman “cannot remove the bodies of his relatives killed by Russian troops,” zaxid.net reported.

The tragedy is another example of how Putin’s war is being waged against all Ukrainians, including children.

The life of Polina’s brother and sister, the 10-year-old Ukrainian girl mad by Harry Potter who was shot dead by the Russians along with their parents, still hangs in the balance today like a little girl blown up by five others when a rocket struck is called a kindergarten.

Polina was among three members of the same family killed in her car by one of Putin’s sabotage and intelligence units operating in the capital on Saturday.

Anton Kudrin, his wife Svetlana Zapadinskaya and their middle daughter died in a hail of bullets, their eldest daughter Sofia and young son Semyon were injured and in critical condition in hospital, unaware that their family had been killed.

A poignant photo of a relative bowing his head as he shakes Semyon’s hand as he lies hit by a fan, portraying Putin’s war on civilians and continuing to have a terrible impact on Ukraineis the youngest and most vulnerable. Sixteen children have been killed and 45 injured since last Thursday, and the death toll is expected to rise later today.

Grandparents Oleg Fedko, 56, and Anna Fedko, 56, also died, driving the family out of their southern city after the Russians invaded.

The brutal treatment suffered by the Russians by the children of Ukraine horrified the world, as it was also revealed that a child with gunshot wounds died on the way to the hospital after his ambulance was fired upon by the invaders.

Yesterday’s photos, depicting the senseless death of the so-called girl in pink pajamas with a unicorn, shocked the world. Surrounded by doctors and nurses, the six-year-old girl lay mortally wounded in a paramedic’s cart held by her blood-soaked father, one of the youngest victims of Putin’s murderous attack on her country.

A photo of the smiling pink-haired student Polina was shared yesterday by Vladimir Bondarenko, the deputy mayor of Kyiv. Mr Bondarenko said: “Her name was Polina. He studied in the 4th grade of the school in Kyiv. She and her parents were shot dead by the Russian DRG. The 10-year-old loved Harry Potter books and was in her final year of elementary school when she was killed.

Seven-year-old Alice Hlans was one of six people killed in a blow to her kindergarten on Friday, the second day of the Russian invasion. Photos of the aftermath of the attack show bodies scattered around the entrance as staff tried to escape with the children.

At least one child hiding in the nursery was injured in the attack.

Chief Prosecutor Irina Venediktova said Alice, who was three months after her eighth birthday, died at a hospital Saturday after the attack in the small town of Okhtyrka, an hour’s drive from Ukraine’s northeastern border.

The Russian military has been accused of using cluster bombs in the attack, with a broken kindergarten showing signs of multiple bomb blasts. The Kremlin has denied the allegations.

An unnamed boy was killed on the second day of fighting in the small town of Chukhuev in the Kharkiv region of eastern Ukraine after a shell hit apartments.

While a local doctor told Sky News that a ten-year-old boy died from gunshot wounds on the way to Ohmatdyt Children’s Hospital in Kyiv on Friday night. Dr Andrei Vysotsky said the boy was “in the ambulance and the ambulance was also under fire”.

The children who were not killed or injured are among more than 500,000 who are trying to flee Ukraine to the West – many have been forced to say goodbye to their fathers, who remain to fight.

Putin’s infamous war against the people of Ukraine was exposed in heartbreaking photos capturing the death of an innocent six-year-old child – named the girl in the pink pajamas with a unicorn – one of 16 children now killed in the conflict.

The disturbing photos outline the battle to save an unnamed little girl who was fatally wounded when the Russians shelled her apartment building in Mariupol on Sunday – and portrayed the horrific casualties the war inflicted on civilians, especially children.

During the rescue operation, a doctor in blue medical scrubs, pumping oxygen into the girl, turned to the AP photographer and said: “Show this to Putin: the eyes of this child and the crying doctors.”

Squeezing her bloodied hand to her mouth and wearing the child’s slippers, pompom scarf and hat, a woman, who may be her mother, was photographed trying to resuscitate the six-year-old in the back of an ambulance after the artillery strike.

The next photo, too vivid to be published, shows the girl’s father holding the hand of his lifeless child while the paramedic resuscitates her small body. He sobs while covered in something that looks like her blood.

A team of doctors then gently transports the child, who is still wearing his red-paired unicorn pajamas, to a hospital in the coastal town. Her bed linen was then cut so that a team of seven doctors worked on her body, which was still caught by the praying father.

The latest image shows the child only in a wheelchair in an empty ward that has been declared dead in a war that claimed at least 210 civilian lives by Sunday, including more than a dozen children.

More than 500,000 refugees, mostly women and children, have fled Ukraine to the West, with some children separated or even orphaned since the invasion began. Queues of up to 25 miles are reported on the border with Poland and Romania.

It came when Mail readers donated an outstanding £ 268,000 on the first day of our call for Ukraine. The owner of the newspaper also promised £ 500,000 – sending the monumental sum for the first day, which exceeded £ 750,000, to be given to renowned charities that are already on site, distributing hot food, blankets and vital housing to the affected families.

The shocking picture of the pale and lifeless body of a six-year-old child could become defining images of the conflict in the same way as a photo of three-year-old Syrian boy Alan Kurdi drowned on a Turkish beach in 2015 shocked the world and revealed the plight of refugees. fleeing the war-torn country.

Her death, as well as that of other children, reveals Putin’s dirty lie that he is not waging war against the Ukrainian people amid calls for him to be treated as a war criminal for his civilian bombings. Several nurseries and kindergartens were also damaged.

President Zelensky said in a televised address yesterday that 16 Ukrainian children had been killed and 45 wounded in the four days since the invasion began.

The little boy Mark Goncharuk was filmed running with others in a van to the Ukrainian border, fighting back tears as he recounted how his father stayed behind to help fight the Russians.

As tears streamed down his face, he said, “We left our father in Kyiv. He helps our heroes, our army and can even fight alone. The family was picked up by a Reuters team. Mark said, “We walked for three hours and planned to walk for three days. You saved us.

Live updates from the war between Russia and Ukraine: Explosions shook Kyiv and Kharkov

Africans who have lived in Ukraine say they have been blocked for days moving to neighboring European Union countries, huddled in the cold without food or shelter, detained by Ukrainian authorities who pushed them to the end of the long queues and even defeated them while passing the Ukrainians.

At least 660,000 people have fled Ukraine in the five days since the Russian invasion began, the UNHCR said. Most are Ukrainians, but some are student or migrant workers from Africa, Asia and other regions who are also desperate to flee.

Chineye Mbagwu, a 24-year-old Nigerian doctor who lived in the western Ukrainian city of Ivano-Frankivsk, said she spent more than two days stranded at the Poland-Ukraine border in Medica because security guards allowed Ukrainians to cross but blocked foreigners.

“Ukrainian border guards did not let us in,” she said in a telephone interview in a trembling voice. “They beat people with sticks and tore their jackets,” she added. “They will hit, beat and push them to the end of the queue. It was awful. “

The African Union and Nigerian President Muhammadu Bukhari have condemned the treatment of Africans fleeing Ukraine following social media reports of border guards preventing them from leaving. Africans also say they are banned from boarding trains heading for the border.

“Reports that Africans are discriminated against for unacceptably different attitudes would be shockingly racist and violate international law,” the African Union said.

Ukraine’s Deputy Interior Minister Anton Herashchenko has denied that his country is blocking the departure of foreigners.

“Everything is simple,” he said. “We are the first to release women and children. Foreign men have to wait for women and children to come forward. We will release all foreigners without hindrance “, he added in a written answer to questions. “The same goes for blacks.”

Ms Mbagwu, a Nigerian doctor, managed to reach Warsaw, but said she had crossed the border only by fighting and making her way.

“They would say ‘only women and children can pass,'” she said. “But they missed some Ukrainian men. And every time a black lady tried to pass, they said, “Our women first,” Ms Mbagwu added.

“There was no shelter from the cold. It snowed. There was no food, no water, no place to rest. “I was literally hallucinating from sleep deprivation,” she said.

She said her 21-year-old brother, a medical student, had been stranded at the border since Friday, but managed to reach Poland after four days of trying.

Not all foreigners report harassment by Ukrainian authorities at border crossings.

A Pakistani student and an Afghan citizen who crossed from Ukraine to Poland on Saturday said the only problem was the very long queues. And a group of Vietnamese workers crossed easily into Moldova on Monday.

Mohamed Saadawi, a 23-year-old Moroccan pharmacy student traveling from the Ukrainian city of Odessa to Warsaw, said he had no problems.

“But it took us a long time to find a good border crossing where there wouldn’t be too many people,” he said. “We were treated there in the same way as the Ukrainians.

The International Organization for Migration estimates that there are more than 470,000 foreign nationals in Ukraine, including a large number of foreign students and migrant workers. At least 6,000 of them have arrived in Moldova and Slovakia alone in the past five days, according to IOM, and many more have moved to Poland.

Many foreigners fleeing Ukraine said they were warmly welcomed in neighboring Poland, Moldova, Hungary and Romania. But Mr Bukhari, the president of Nigeria, said there were reports of Polish officials refusing to allow Nigerians.

Piotr Müller, a spokesman for the Polish prime minister, denied this, saying: “Poland allows everyone to come from Ukraine, regardless of their nationality.”

Piotr Bistrianin, head of the Ocalenie Foundation, a Polish charity for refugees, said that so far “the problems have been on the Ukrainian side”.

More than 300,000 people have fled Ukraine to Poland since the Russian invasion began, according to the Polish Interior Ministry. Improvised quarters are being set up all over the country, and Poles are massively helping Ukrainians, transporting them across the border, placing them in their homes, feeding them and dressing them.

On Monday, Poland’s ambassador to the United Nations, Krzysztof Szczerski, said his country welcomed all foreign students studying in Ukraine and invited them to continue their studies in Poland.

In the years before the Russian invasion, Poland had taken a firm stance on migrants trying to enter the country. The army and border guards have pushed asylum seekers from the Middle East and Africa back to Belarus. Last week, humanitarian organizations reported that a 26-year-old man from Yemen froze to death on the border.

Some of the foreigners arriving in Poland from Ukraine in the last few days have been exhausted and frozen, according to local humanitarian organizations. Some were taken directly to hospitals for their injuries.

Ahmed Haboubi, a 22-year-old French-Tunisian medical student, said all foreign nationals, including Africans, Israelis, Canadians and Americans, were told to go to a gate at the Medyka checkpoint from Ukraine to Poland, which would only handle four people every few hours, while Ukrainians were allowed to pass freely through another gate.

“The Ukrainian army beat me so much that I could not walk properly,” he said in a telephone interview. “When I finally managed to enter Poland, the Polish authorities took me straight to the hospital,” he added.

“It was absolute chaos. They behaved like animals. There are still thousands of people stranded there. “

He said Poland welcomed him warmly.

Denis Nana Apia Nkansa, a Ghanaian medical student, said he saw the same discrimination when moving from Ukraine to the Romanian city of Siret – one rule for Ukrainians and another for everyone else. Thousands of foreigners, including Zambians, Namibians, Moroccans, Indians and Pakistanis, were directed to one gate, which was largely closed, while another, reserved for Ukrainians, was open and people passed through.

In about three hours, four or five foreigners were allowed to leave while there was a “mass influx” of crossing Ukrainians, he said. “It’s not fair,” he said, “but we realized they had to take care of their people first.”

Nkansa, 31, said he had organized 74 Ghanaian and Nigerian students to get involved and rent a bus to escape together. They reached the border early Saturday morning, he said, but it took them 24 hours to cross.

Emanuel Nwulu, 30, a Nigerian electronics student at Kharkiv National University, said that when he tried to board a train in Ukraine west of the border, Ukrainian officials told him, “Blacks can’t get on the train.” . But Mr. Nwulu and his cousin managed to climb by force.

Taha Daraa, a 25-year-old Moroccan fourth-year dentist at the Dnieper Medical Institute, began his trip around noon on Saturday and crossed the border into Romania in the early hours of Monday morning after sleepless days.

“We were treated so badly. We took buses to the Romanian border. It was very scary, then we had to cross the border until we heard shots, “he said via WhatsApp. “All we did was pray. Our parents also prayed for our safety. This is the only protection we had, “he added.

“I witnessed a lot of racism.”

He said he was in a group with two other Moroccans and many other Africans, and asked a Ukrainian border guard to let them pass. The guard started firing his pistol into the air to scare them, and they retreated.

“I have never been so scared in my life,” Mr Daraa said. “He asked us to come back. It was snowing on us. When the crowd grew, they gave up and let everyone pass. ”

He said Romanians take good care of him and other foreigners and provide them with food and other necessities.

“They gave us everything,” he said.

Biden will “call for action to address social media as harmful to mental health, especially for young people,” a senior administration official told a news briefing Tuesday morning.

“Evidence is growing that social media is playing a systemic role in deteriorating the mental health of countless young people,” the official said.

But officials would not say whether the president would push for sanctions on huge companies such as Ticket, Twitter and Facebook.

Bitcoin, crypto rises, separates from stocks, while Russia-Ukraine moves from bad to worse

Bitcoin (BTC-USD) rose more than 5% on Tuesday, despite a reluctance to take risks to lower blue-chip stocks and the technologies that cryptocurrencies have been linked to for weeks as markets embraced new developments in Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

Data released this week by Kaiko show that the volume of trade in bitcoin and stable coins such as Tether (USDT-USD) has jumped in the last few days within the Ukrainian and Russian markets, as the ruble fell on world markets to just pennies against the US dollar.

In recent sessions, digital tokens have been seen as risk-sensitive assets rather than an alternative asset class that should be – including bitcoin, which some market participants see as a safe haven.

However, the move to sanction Moscow – including excluding Russia from the global financial system SWIFT – appears to have caused a shift in sentiment in favor of crypto. Some crypto investors have suggested that government-sponsored financial repression reinforces the benefits of the more decentralized digital token sector.

“The Ukraine-Russia situation has caused significant financial turmoil and individuals, companies and, in fact, government agencies – not only in the region but also worldwide – are looking for alternatives to traditional systems,” said Nigel Green of deVere Group, citing growing financial chaos in Russia. which is affecting ordinary citizens.

With the closure of banks, ATM money is running out, threats to personal savings are being taken to pay for war, and SWIFT’s main international payment system is armed, among other factors, with a viable, decentralized, borderless, resilient “The counterfeit monetary system, which cannot be confiscated, has been exposed.”

“And because alternatives, such as crypto, are proving reliable and workable, the reserve status of the dollar could eventually be jeopardized,” he added.

“There are currently many cases of using crypto, which is a relatively quick and effective way to move money across borders,” CoinDesk’s global macro editor and CoinDesk TV presenter Emily Parker told Yahoo Finance Live on Tuesday.

The link between cryptocurrency and stocks is falling apart.

The link between cryptocurrency and stocks is falling apart.

On Monday, the demand for bitcoin from buyers jumped its price by 17% within 24 hours. Meanwhile, the Standard and Poor’s index ended slightly lower (-0.25%), and the Nasdaq closed slightly higher (+ 0.44%). This was a complete reversal from last week, when BTC’s 60-day correlation with the S&P 500 reached a new all-time high – meaning it has never been so closely linked to equities.

When that happened, Noel Acheson, head of market insight at Genesis Trading, told Yahoo Finance last Wednesday that widespread uncertainty over monetary and geopolitical policy seemed to be causing a sell-off by investors in all risky assets.

According to CoinMetrics, BTC’s 60-day correlation with the S&P 500 is heading south – and analysts like Acheson are paying close attention.

Although it is still too early to call the trend, Acheson and others are seeking to see if this breakthrough signals a deeper directional change or “separation” from capital investment. If this is the case, the current dynamics of bitcoin may signal a major change in the way investors value the asset.

According to Acheson, part of Bitcoin’s performance yesterday may be due to derivative-driven “short squeeze” in addition to other factors of trading momentum. However, some indicators suggest that something deeper may be happening.

Indicators in the chain from data provider Glassnode suggest that the majority of bitcoin purchases in the last few days come from smaller retail investors or buyers who own less than 1 bitcoin. Given the high acceptance of bitcoin by larger investors, this is the first increase in demand from retailers that the asset saw this year.

A lawyer for Rivera’s property confirmed the news to Fox News Digital in a statement Tuesday.

Khan, a partner of Brown, Neri, Smith & Khan LLP, and an adviser to Rivera’s youngest son Josie and her estate, told Fox News Digital in a statement.

The statement continued: “Through this agreement, Josie will receive fair compensation for having to endure the drowning of her beloved mother in Lake Pirou. Although the tragic loss of Josie’s mother can never be truly overcome, we are very pleased that the monetary agreement will be of great help to Josie in his life beyond this tragedy. ”

The settlement comes nearly two years after the TV star died at the age of 33 from an accidental drowning in Lake Piru.

Naya’s ex-husband Ryan Dorsey and the late star’s estate have filed a lawsuit in 2020 in the Ventura County Supreme Court, claiming the actress’ death is preventable.

The departments named in the lawsuit include Ventura County, Ventura County Park and Recreation Management and the United Water Protection District – all of which have been tried for wrongful death and emotional stress due to negligence.

The complaint states that “when Naya arrived in the recreation area of Lake Piru, without a drop of information or warning about the dangerous conditions of the lake, she rented a pontoon boat,” the documents said. The hiring process took minutes and did nothing to inform Naya of the dangerous conditions that could occur on the lake, including strong currents, winds and underwater debris, according to the complaint.

In addition, the documentation states that the rental agent “did not warn Naya to wear the vest, but instead simply put the vest in the boat for rent. Both an inspection and the rental agreement confirm that the boat is not equipped with the life-saving device required by California law, ”according to the complaint.

The Ventura County Court has confirmed that the cause of Rivera’s death was drowning, after completion of the autopsy report. The manner of death is indicated as an accident.

Rivera was the object of a huge search effort led by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, which lasted five days after she rented a pontoon boat with her then 4-year-old son, Josie, and disappeared. Police confirmed that the body was found in the northeast corner of Lake Piru. Hours later at a press conference, authorities said they were “confident” it was the former star of Glee.

Rivera and her son went swimming during their trip – he was wearing a life jacket, but she wasn’t – and he returned to the boat, but she didn’t, the sheriff’s office said.

The child was found safely on the boat three hours later by another boatman. According to Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub, Josie told investigators that his mother helped him get back on board the boat. Then he looked back and saw her disappear into the water.

Maybe now Markelle Fultz could finally just play basketball

The Orlando Magic is, at best, the third worst team in the NBA this season. That’s why you probably didn’t watch their home game on Monday night against the Indiana Pacers. You didn’t miss much: For 32 of the 48 minutes of the game, it was a throw-away race between two bad Eastern Conference teams that didn’t go anywhere in particular. But in the remaining 16 minutes, this otherwise unforgettable game marks the triumphant return to action of Markel Fultz. Do you remember Fultz? Yes! This person!

Perhaps this will break your respect for this website and its hard-working staff when I tell you that not too long ago too many of us spent too much time debating in Slack whether Fultz belongs to Mount Rushmore in the NBA Draft. In the end, there was widespread agreement among the innocent participants in this discussion that the best choice to play a total of 33 games in two seasons for the team that drafted it was in fact a huge historic setback, even if he resurrected his career elsewhere. And this resurrection is still far from complete. Fultz really showed glimpses of how he could succeed on the NBA floor during his third season as a professional, but on his second NBA team, and it’s worth taking a step back anyway and appreciating how sad it was so far: Fultz, once hailed as a prospect by almost a generation not to be missed, operated a constant rotation of the insanely cursed Orlando Magic, and this was considered happy development.

And that was before Fultz suffered an ACL rupture two weeks after the 2020-21 season, ending the longest consecutive game of his career in the NBA, with a staggering 49. Between a broken shoulder and the ensuing absolute loss due to confidence in his jump, which struck him in Philadelphia, and a knee injury that now deprives him of most of the last two campaigns, Fultz was limited to just 114 NBA games in most of his five seasons as a professional. It’s kind of shocking to look back and realize that Fultz has never really been closer to a career as a NBA frontman than a few days before he was selected to enter the league. Nowadays, he is receiving a standing ovation for simply moving to the NBA on his own.

After all, this will be a happy blog. Fultz played eight minutes in each half on Monday night and looked very much like a solid NBA player. The confusion and horror of the unprecedented brainstorm that destroyed Fultz’s jumper tends to redirect the study of his skill set far from what he has always been best at, which is to dribble to anywhere on the floor with ease, with which few players in the sport can match. Fortunately, this ability seems to have more or less survived the ACL injury. Fultz made some great moves on Monday night and gave a very encouraging 10 points and six assists in his limited series:

Extremely cool back position in traffic was eye-popping, but for me the best game here came at the end of the third quarter, with Magic up 13 points and I felt good. Fultz grabbed a pass on the wing and immediately headed to the right. When Dwayne Washington cut his way to the bowl, Fultz turned left and took a slippery step back and squeezed out a beautiful fading jumper. Fultz will probably have to show at least a desire to try threes – he took zero on Monday night – to achieve something close to his potential before the draft, but in the meantime he can partially compensate for this deficit by doing smart little things like catching the ball in move, jump past fake fakes and reliably reach your comfortable places. Either way, it’s a lot cooler to watch than a clumsy and indecisive set of shots released in the name of distance.

Magic head coach Jamal Mosley says Fultz will be limited to 16 to 20 minutes a night for now, but that there will be room to maneuver depending on how Fultz feels on the floor. So far, he is no better than the third guard of the Orlando Magic, sitting behind two younger players taken by the Magic in the time since they exchanged for Fultz in 2019. Even if Fultz becomes good and endures it, he will still he still has to make his way to a bigger role, and his path to a position of professional stability is probably far from over. For now, it’s nice to see him on the NBA floor, playing basketball, with completely nullified professional expectations and whole heads removed from the time his jumper shape was the difference between an excuse or a disaster for a controversial multi-year overhaul. Fultz is now just a rotating player with a reasonable contract, who makes great moves and tries to move the needle with a few tickets for his team. After all he has been through, this is really enough to make a person stand up and cheer up.

After burning for days, a ship carrying thousands of luxury cars sank

Two weeks after it caught fire, a huge ship carrying thousands of luxury cars sank about 253 miles from the Azores on Tuesday morning, according to the company that runs the ship.

The ship, Felicity Ace, crashed at about 9 a.m. local time after tilting to starboard, sinking about 4,000 vehicles – including more than 1,000 Porsches and 200 Bentleys – at sea, according to MOL Ship Management.

Environmental groups were deeply concerned that the ship would also sink into the pollution it would cause in the unique ecosystem of the Azores, the Portuguese archipelago in the North Atlantic, where the seabed is covered with coral reefs, coral forests and mushrooms.

The area is home to sperm whales, blue whales, humpback whales, dolphins and sharks, among other species, according to Oceana, an ecological group.

According to Oceana, a massive ship like the Felicity Ace can hold more than three million liters of heavy fuel as well as oil. Other pollutants in the boat include electrical wires, paint and plastics.

A fire broke out in the cargo hold of the ship six days after it left Emden, Germany, for the port of Davisville in Rhode Island. MOL Ship Management did not say how or why the fire started.

Nearby merchant ships and a helicopter rescued 22 members of the ship’s crew. No one was injured in the evacuation.

But the 650-foot-long Felicity Ace remained blazing and swirling as it drifted off the coast of Western Europe.

There have been several efforts to put out the fire and assess the damage to the ship.

Photos shared by the Portuguese navy show that the ship was engulfed in white smoke. One photo shows a smaller boat spraying water on the Felicity Ace. The middle of the ship looked scorched.

The Portuguese navy said on Friday that a team of experts had arrived by helicopter the day before. MOL Ship Management said a large rescue tug has begun towing Felicity Ace to a “safe area” off the Azores.

“The ship, which looks stable, has no fires outside or inside, although there is a high temperature in the central part, no smoke in its structure,” the Navy said at the time.

But on Tuesday morning, while the ship was being towed, it “lost stability and sank”, according to the Portuguese navy.

A “small patch of oily residue” was visible and scattered by the water jets of the tugs, the Navy said. The area is being monitored by Portuguese and European environmental officials, a statement from the Navy said.

Angus Fitton, a spokesman for Porsche Cars North America Inc., said he was relieved that Felicity Ace crew members were “safe and well” and said the company “supports our customers as much as we can.”

“We are already working to replace every car affected,” he said, “and the first cars will be built soon.” Mr Fitton did not say when that would happen.

One of the Porsches on board belonged to Matt Farah, a car enthusiast and editor of The Smoking Tire.

He has been waiting for the 2022 metal Boxster Spyder with a retail price of about $ 123,000 since August.

Mr. Farah summed up the loss in his podcast: “Car. boat. Fire. Flying. For example, that’s the whole story. “

Marine experts said that even if the ship had been rescued, the cars on board would most likely be scrapped.

“After being on board a ship that is on fire, no one can tell you much about the integrity of the car,” said Richard Burke, professor and chairman of naval architecture and marine engineering at Maritime College at New York State University. So if you can’t do that, why would you agree to a warranty contract for this car?

Mr. Farah agreed in his podcast.

“If it’s not fire, it’s molten lithium,” he said. “If it’s not molten lithium, it’s smoke. And if it’s not smoke, it’s seawater. “

Dr Burke noted that fires on car carriers can be extremely difficult to put out, as ships typically carry thousands of vehicles and each vehicle will have a gallon of petrol, half a gallon of motor oil and four tires that can burn.

“They are really difficult fires; they are terrible, “said Dr. Burke, adding:” Once the fire starts, the crew has little chance of putting out the fire. “

In December 2018, another 650-foot carrier, Sincerity Ace, caught fire in the Pacific Ocean, about 2,000 miles northwest of Oahu, Hawaii, while transporting about 3,500 Nissan vehicles from Japan, according to The Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

Mr Farah, who discusses cars for three hours each week on his show, said in an email that given the state of the world, Porsche’s loss was insignificant.

“There is a global pandemic that people just want to pretend doesn’t exist and move on, and we’re about to have World War III,” he wrote before the ship sank. “I feel a lot worse about these things than I do about my stupid car.
