Elliott himself criticized The Power of the Dog and criticized the film’s homosexuality

Elliott himself criticized Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog during a visit to Mark Maron’s WTF podcast (via Insider). Campion’s drama has been nominated for 12 Oscars, more than any other film this year. Benedict Cumberbatch plays the role of a ranch sadist who turns life into hell for his new daughter-in-law and her son in 1925 in Montana. Elliott called the film a piece of shit, and he seemed worried about how the film deconstructed classic Western archetypes like cowboys. Elliott compares Champion’s cowboys to Chippendale dancers who “wear bow ties and more.”

“That’s what all those fucking cowboys looked like in this movie,” Elliott said. “They run around with boys and without shirts. There are all these allusions to homosexuality in the film. “

Cumberbatch’s character is a closed gay man in the film. Maron told Elliott that these topics were “what the film is about,” but Elliott remained critical of Campion’s approach to the Western genre. Elliott has been involved in several Western projects throughout his career, including the recent Paramount Plus pre-series Yellowstone 1883.

“Where’s the western in this western?” Elliott asked. “I mean, Cumberbatch never came out of his fucking boys. There were two pairs of boys – a wool pair and a leather pair. And every fucking time he came in from somewhere — he’d never been on a horse, maybe once — he went into the fucking house, stormed the fucking stairs, went to bed in his humanity, and played the banjo. What the hell? ”

Elliott told Champion, “What the hell does this woman down there know about the American West? Why the hell did she make this movie in New Zealand and call it Montana? And say so? That, damn it, rubbed me in the wrong way. “

Elliott, who won an Oscar nomination a few years ago for starring in The Star, added: “I just came from Texas, where I hung out with families – not men – but families. Big, long, extended families of several generations who made a living and their lives were about being cowboys. And boy, when I saw that [movie], I thought, What the hell? Where are we in this world today?

“The Power of the Dog” was nominated for Best Picture and Best Director. Elliot did call Champion a “brilliant” director, although he disagreed with her overall approach to the genre. The film is already airing on Netflix.

George Peyton: We need a better QB game, so we will be aggressive

Denver Broncos Free Agency press conference

The Broncos are firmly in the market for a quarterback with Aaron Rodgers, who is probably at the top of the list if he decides to leave the Packers.

But because Rodgers has a contract with another team, Denver general manager George Patton cannot speak publicly about Rodgers.

Still, the two-time defending MVP is the proverbial elephant in the room when Broncos staff are asked for a quarterback. Speaking to the media at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis on Tuesday, Patton said: “We just want the best person.”

“We don’t care if it’s a free agency. We don’t care if it’s a draft. “We don’t care if it’s a trade,” Patton said. “We will exhaust all possibilities to try to find the best person for the Broncos.

To that end, Patton noted that finding the right quarterback is always a priority until it happens.

“This is the most important position in the sport, so we are always looking,” Patton said. And we have Drew Locke under contract, we have Rip [Brett Rypien]. But we are always looking. And we will [leave] there is no stone upon stone to find this man. We know we need to play better than the quarterback, so we will be aggressive. “

If things don’t work out with the Rodgers trade, there are other veterans on the market, such as Jimmy Garopolo of San Francisco. Or they could turn to someone like Mitchell Trubyski at a free agency. Or the Broncos can make a QB, as they currently have number 9 as the overall pick.

“Obviously we’re going to sit with all of them, watch them compete with other really good quarterbacks,” Patton said. “And this class is an interesting class. You have five or six talented boys and they are all different. So we all really need to improve and put them in order, put them in order and see who is the best for the Denver Broncos if we go in that direction in the draft. ”

Whether the Broncos eventually acquire Rodgers or not, it certainly looks like they’ll have someone new behind the center when the season opens in September.

A new poll shows Americans’ fears about the virus are easing.

Americans are less worried about contracting and spreading the coronavirus than they were six months ago, as the once-gaining variant of Omicron retreats in the United States and much of the world, according to a new poll by the Associated Press and NORC. Public Relations Research.

The poll also showed support for mask-wearing mandates, which are rapidly waning across much of the United States, is waning.

Of nearly 1,300 adults surveyed in mid-February, 24 percent said they were “extremely or very concerned” about themselves or a family member who tested positive for the virus. In December, when Omicron appeared and quickly became the world’s dominant option, 36 percent of respondents expressed this concern.

The number of Americans supporting mask-wearing mandates is also declining. Last August, 55 percent of respondents said they approved of mandatory mask-wearing, compared to about 50 percent who said they support it now, representing a 9 percent change in the number of people who agree.

According to the poll, vaccinated Americans are more likely to support mandates, as are Democrats, regardless of vaccination status. Nearly 80 percent of Democrats are in favor of Americans wearing masks when they are around other people outside their homes. But only 22 percent of Republicans agree with that view; in fact, over 50 percent of Republicans strongly disagree with the notion.

A growing number of states have already removed the mandatory use of masks in most indoor settings, including entertainment venues and workplaces. And while the number of cases is only a fraction of what it was at Omicron’s peak, nearly 52,000 people are hospitalized with Covid nationwide, according to the New York Times database. This is a decrease of about 44 percent over the past two weeks.

Last Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced new rules that most Americans can take off their masks. The agency also approved an end to social distancing.

While mask-wearing requirements in schools remain in place in many states, some of these restrictions, such as those in California, Oregon and Washington, will expire in the next few weeks.

On Sunday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced tentative plans to lift mandatory mask-wearing in early March for the city’s largest school district. He also said he intends to lift vaccination requirements in restaurants, gyms and movie theaters if case numbers remain low.

His announcement was welcomed by some, including businesses eager for visitors and tourists. But some health experts see the lifting of vaccination rules as premature, citing the possibility of future options and the reshaping of the pandemic in the past.

Putin’s 18-year-old “love child” has been the target of an online troll over the war in Ukraine

Vladimir PutinThe alleged 18-year-old child in love was trolled online because of the Russian war Ukraine.

Louise Rozova, a student in St. Petersburg, came under siege Instagram over the invasion with followers who ask her: “Are you sitting in the bunker ?? Like a rat? ‘

Rozova, who has 84,000 followers, stopped publishing publicly five months ago, raising suspicions that Putin has gagged her, even though her account remains visible.

This comes amid allegations that Putin hid members of his family in a luxury high-tech bunker in an “underground city” in Siberia designed to protect against nuclear war.

In recent days, trolls have commented on Rozova’s latest post from October 2021, accusing the teenager of being “the daughter of a murderer, a war criminal, a psychopath and a drug addict.”

Many publications include the Ukrainian blue and yellow flag, and one carried the message: “The Russian nation must rise up against this dictator. You don’t want to have anything to do with him.

Rozova is the daughter of a cleaner who became a multimillionaire, Svetlana Krivonogih, 46, now a co-owner of a large Russian bank.

Svetlana – who owns a plush estate for 3.1 million pounds in Monaco – did not comment on allegations that her daughter was the father of the Kremlin’s powerful man, nor Rozova, also known as Elizabeth, although she told Russia’s GQ that ” probably “looks” like a young Putin.

Putin has not publicly acknowledged it.

Troll, who suspected she might be in her mother’s Mediterranean hole, said: “While you are confused in Monaco, people of your generation are dying in Ukraine because of your father.

“Your fate will be that of Maria Milosevic when your father is sent to The Hague.

‘SHOW YOUR FACE AWAY!’

She was told: “Young Russian soldiers are being sent to Ukraine without knowing where they are, who they are fighting and what they are doing.

“Russia’s economy is collapsing, reaching absolute zero.

“Soon, if not, you will no longer be able to use Netflix, Spotify, social media applications, pay with Google and Apple Pay, all popular brands, and boycott and leave Russia.”

Rozova was also told: “Many Ukrainians have forgotten what sleep is and even more so in bed. After all, falling asleep puts many of us at risk of not waking up.

“People spend the night in basements like rats because bombs fall from the sky and rockets come.

“All you need is not to be silent, not to stand aside. Tell people the truth about what is happening in Ukraine!

“We want to live in peace and sleep peacefully in our beds, to know that in the morning our relatives and friends will be alive.”

Another wrote, “There’s nothing she can do to have a crazy father.” Another said, “Come on, guys, she’s just human. She is not guilty.

Ukraine is asking foreigners to help fight Russia. Some are listening to the call, despite the huge risks.

Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba wrote on Twitter that anyone wishing to participate should contact Ukraine’s diplomatic missions in the countries concerned. “Together we defeated Hitler and we will defeat Putin,” Kuleba said on Sunday.

Foreign nationals have been fighting in Ukraine since 2014, when Russian-backed separatists seized parts of the Donbas region. But experts tracking foreign fighters say it is a step far beyond ambition. Ukrainian embassies are openly involved in recruiting fighters, while Western governments are offering support to those who want to join the Ukrainian side.

“It’s potentially much, much bigger than it was in 2014,” said Kachper Rekauek, a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for the Study of Extremism at the University of Oslo who has studied foreign fighters in Ukraine. Rekawek estimated the number of foreigners involved in this earlier battle at about 1,000.

The risks are extreme. Ukrainian cities have suffered cycles of intense shelling, and talks between Kyiv and Moscow have not led to any breakthroughs. At least 11 people were killed in the eastern city of Kharkiv on Monday, and more were injured, Ukrainian authorities said. Alleged cluster munitions have struck buildings in residential areas of the city.

“It is very dangerous for people to travel [to Ukraine] at the moment, “said Ed Arnold, a European Security Research Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute’s London-based think tank. “Fighting in war is not as easy as taking up arms and just fighting,” he said.

Arnold, who served as an infantry officer in the British Army, said it could be safer for those with military training. However, “if you don’t have military training, that’s a very stupid idea,” he added.

So far, most of Ukraine’s foreign fighters are from other post-Soviet countries such as Georgia and Belarus. Mamuka Mamulashvili, commander of a group called the Georgian Legion, which is already fighting in Ukraine, said he was coordinating with the government in Kiev to help recruit international fighters. He currently has more than 200 people under his command, he said.

“They are mostly Georgians, but they have different nationalities,” Mamulashvili said, adding that some of them included people from Britain, the United States, Albania and India. “These are very different boys and we are still waiting,” Mamulashvili said.

The Georgian Legion was the only international group in Ukraine. Now the responsibility of the Georgian fighters was to create “a larger, say, brigade,” Mamulashvili said.

If their numbers grow as expected, the Ukrainian war could mark the largest recruitment of international fighters in Europe since the Spanish Civil War.

At least 50,000 people joined the International Brigades in support of the Soviet-backed republican cause in Spain between 1936 and 1938. Although the Republicans were eventually defeated by Nazi nationalist forces, they became an international cause, a celebrity for the left, inspiring the writings of George Orwell and Ernest Hemingway.

Lisa Kirschenbaum, a professor of history at the University of West Chester, said that although there were no such ideological appeals from Ukraine, there were “clear parallels” between recruiting foreigners during the Spanish War and current recruitment in Ukraine, even before language.

“The design of the call for volunteers, equating the war against Hitler with the war against Putin, implies a more symbolic role or, if you wish, a propaganda goal,” Kirschenbaum wrote in an email. “The arrival of foreign volunteers practically marks the cause of Ukraine as the cause of the ‘civilized’ world.”

In speeches and votes, officials from various European nations have allowed or appear to have encouraged their citizens to fight on behalf of Ukraine.

On Monday, Latvian lawmakers voted unanimously to allow Latvian citizens to fight in Ukraine, according to Reuters. In Denmark, Prime Minister Mete Frederiksen said on Sunday that “there is nothing at first glance that could legally prevent someone from going to Ukraine to take part in the conflict on the Ukrainian side.”

In Canada, Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie said Sunday that while the government warns that traveling to Ukraine is dangerous, joining the battle is an individual choice Canadians can make for themselves.

“We understand that people of Ukrainian descent want to support their fellow Ukrainians, and that there is a desire to defend the homeland, and in that sense it is their personal decision,” Jolie told a news conference.

British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss told the BBC on Sunday that she supported people in Britain who might want to travel to Ukraine to join the battle, adding that Ukrainians were fighting for freedom, “not just for Ukraine. but also for the whole of Europe. “

However, on Monday, British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace was asked by Sky News about Trus’s comments and said there were “better ways” for civilians to “contribute to Ukraine’s security”.

Although he agreed with Trus that Ukraine is defending democracy, traveling to Ukraine could be dangerous for people without military experience, Wallace said. “If you want to help and are a citizen of the United Kingdom, come and join our armed forces,” he said.

Other countries are even more cautious. Ukrainian authorities said on Monday that the Georgian government had blocked a charter flight from Tbilisi to Poland, in which there were foreign nationals ready to fight.

Georgian Legion Commander Mamulashvili said about 500 Georgians were expected to join him in Ukraine before the flight was blocked. “I would say that the Georgian government is completely pro-Russian and supports the Russian occupation of Ukraine,” Mamulashvili added, although Georgia itself was attacked by Russia and condemned the 2014 annexation of Crimea.

Some countries also have laws that may prohibit citizens from fighting in Ukraine. In the United Kingdom, a law of 1870 forbade fighting alongside any country that was at war with a country that was at peace with Britain. However, the law has not been used for centuries, including during the Spanish Civil War.

Much of the Western focus on foreign fighters in recent years has been on citizens joining extremist groups such as Islamic State in Syria. Although the British government has tried to persecute some citizens who fought with Kurdish militias in northern Syria, the cases have fallen apart due to the difficulty of determining whether these are terrorist acts.

“There is a gray area,” said Rekauek, a researcher at the University of Oslo. “We are in this fantastic world in the sense that being a foreign terrorist fighter is illegal everywhere. But to be a foreign fighter? Oh, this is a slightly different fish kettle.

Aaron Zelin, a fellow at the Washington Institute for Middle East Policy who tracks the role of foreign nationals during the Syrian war, said Ukraine’s context makes it significantly different for Western governments.

“Foreigners who voluntarily fight on behalf of Ukraine are unlikely to return home and then have an ideology that makes them want to carry out some kind of terrorist attack in the heart of London, Paris or Brussels,” Zelin said. .

But the war is unpredictable. “Obviously there is a danger among the circle of people who could travel to fight for Ukraine, there are those who are looking for excitement or just enjoying the battle,” said Anthony Dworkin, a senior political associate at the European Council on Foreign Relations. .

“Obviously, it is understandable why Ukraine would welcome anyone who is ready to fight, but the countries must be very careful to encourage it,” Dworkin added.

$ 10 toothpaste? US manufacturers of household goods are facing a discount due to rising prices

March 1 – Get ready for a $ 10 toothpaste tube.

Colgate-Palmolive Co. (CL.N) CEO Noel Wallace told an industry conference last week that the household goods maker sees its new Optic White Pro toothpaste as a premium product, “vital” for its ability to raise prices. which will help increase profits this year.

His remarks come as many consumer product companies raise prices as much as they can to offset their own rising costs, a trend that could continue due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, whose economic risks include rising gasoline prices. Read more

So far, retailers and consumers appear to be largely indifferent to higher prices. But some lawmakers and consumer advocates say companies are raising prices excessively to boost profits and return money to shareholders.

“We are seeing significant increases in the prices of almost every item that consumers buy,” said US spokesman David Sicillin, who is working on proposed antitrust legislation aimed at reducing prices. “They cause real difficulties. People take things out of their food carts because it’s too expensive.”

In the past, large retailers such as Walmart Inc (WMT.N) have repulsed rising prices. But now retailers like Walmart and Target Corp.

Target said in a profit talk on Tuesday that rising prices are the last lever he pulls when faced with increased costs. Read more

The US Federal Trade Commission has been investigating the incredible prices and supply chain disruptions for the past three months, requiring companies including Procter & Gamble, Kraft Heinz Co. (KHC.O), Kroger Co (KR.N) and Walmart to hand over domestic documents for profit margins, prices and promotions.

Comments on the inquiry are due by March 14 and so far show that small grocers are angry that they need to pay more and receive less important products. Consumers wrote that they could not find oatmeal, cereals and cat food.

In an interview with Reuters, Cicilline cited Colgate as an example of a company that advertises price increases, makes basic items too expensive and pays more to investors.

Colgate expects its margins to increase this year, in part due to higher prices. He also bought almost 50% more shares last year, which is an advantage for investors.

Rising prices are a “key capability” for Colgate that will help boost profits, Wallace said last week.

A Colgate spokesman said in a statement that the company has a wide portfolio of products at various price points and advertised its new $ 10 toothpaste as the first with 5% hydrogen peroxide, with “demonstrated efficacy for teeth whitening.”

Consumer goods companies began raising prices last year in response to rising raw material costs and labor shortages due to the pandemic. Read more

“There is an incredible appetite for our products,” said Katie Dennis, a spokeswoman for the Consumer Brands Association, a trading group for consumer packaging companies, including Colgate. “We do the most important things. And there is no option not to deliver them.”

Prices have also risen on competing private label items, analysts said.

The White House is focused on corporate profits as it fights inflation. Bharat Ramamurti, deputy director of the White House National Economic Council, said there were examples of companies outside the meat packaging industry – which is especially in the White House’s field of vision – raising prices beyond their own expense. Lindsay Owens, executive director of the progressive nonprofit Groundwork Collaborative, called diapers a low-competitive category, paving the way for aggressive price increases.

The margins of Kimberly-Clark Corp. (KMB.N) declined in 2021 due to rising costs. Diaper maker Huggies is betting that consumers will buy more expensive options made with plant materials, which will help its profits recover, conference executives said last week.

P&G executives said last week that they expect margins to continue to improve as higher prices hit stores. The company also plans to buy back more shares than originally planned. Read more

“Many companies are taking advantage of high consumer demand to keep raising prices when not needed,” said Jack Gillis, executive director of the Consumer Federation of America, a nonprofit group. “As long as consumers are willing to pay these prices, there is no incentive to lower them.”

Samuel L. Jackson is not here for Joe Rogan’s apology for “n-word”.

“He says no one understood the context when he said it,” Jackson told The Times in a recent interview, reportedly rolling his eyes as he said it. “But he shouldn’t have said that.”
Rogan apologized in February after a compilation of a video in which he used racist insult went viral on social media.

“I know that for most people there is no context in which a white person is allowed to say that, nothing that is publicly in a podcast, and I agree with that,” Rogan said at the time.

In an interview with The Times, Jackson dismissed this.

“It’s not the context, dude, it’s convenient for him to do it,” he told The Times. “Say you’re sorry you want to keep your money, but you had fun and you say you did it because it was fun.”

Jackson added that “it has to be an element of what the story is about. The story is a context – but just to make people laugh? That’s wrong.”

He also discussed director and writer Quentin Tarantino, who has used the word in several of his films, including Criminal Reading and Django Released. Jackson is involved in both projects.

The actor said that during the filming of “Jango released”, his colleague Leonardo DiCaprio said during rehearsals that he was uncomfortable using the insult as many times as required of his character in the script.

“Quentin and I said we should. Every time someone wants an example of n-word overuse, he goes to Quentin – it’s unfair,” Jackson said. “He just tells the story and the characters talk like that. When [fellow director] Steve McQueen does it, it’s an art. He is an artist. Quentin is just a popcorn director. “

CNN asked Rogan’s representatives for comment.
