Indian Wells: Félix Auger-Aliassime stays in place and signs for Francisco Cerundolo

Quebec’s Félix Auger-Aliassime was back on his feet in Indian Wells on Monday despite beating Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo.

After a hotly contested battle that lasted more than two hours, “FAA” triumphed in straight sets 7-5, 6-4 against the 27th seed.

The Montrealer gave himself a real scare at the end of the duel. On serve for the match he missed two chances to close the books, at 5-3 he was broken by a tireless Cerundolo.

In the end, Auger-Aliassime needed six match points to settle the case of his 24-year-old rival sending a forehand wide.

Despite this win, the FAA certainly wants to improve their ball possession returns. He was dominant when he successfully started the rally on his first try, but only hit 49% of his first serve attempts.

He’ll also want to limit unforced errors in his next match, which will pit him against American Tommy Paul. In his first two duels in California, he signed 25 and 28 respectively.

Auger-Aliassime will try to get his ticket to the quarterfinals ー and, who knows, maybe a duel against Carlos Alcaraz ー on Tuesday.

A bad third run for Leylah

In the women’s singles draw, Leylah Fernandez worked hard before losing in three sets to Caroline Garcia.

The world’s fifth slugger was incisive in the final set to advance to the next round in a 6-4, 6-7(5) and 6-1 win after more than 2:15.

It is the second time this year that the Frenchwoman has eliminated Fernandez using her best assets. In the second round of the Australian Open in January, she won 7:6 (5), 7:5.

The Quebecer gave everything to stay alive in the tiebreak of the second set of the game of the day. In the next set she only won 34% of the points.

Dangerous in possession, with 11 aces and just three double faults, Garcia won 86% of the rallies she initiated with a winning first serve.

Fernandez’s best result this year, 49th player in the world, is a quarter-final defeat at the Auckland tournament.

Garcia meets Romanian Sorana Cirstea in the round of 16.

Michael RothsteinESPN Staff Writer4:41 PM ET2 Minute Read

The Atlanta Falcons continued their free-agent spending spree Monday, agreeing deals with former Cincinnati Bengals safety Jessie Bates III, sources told ESPN.

The deal, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter, is for four years and $64.02 million, with $23 million in the first year and $36 million over the first two years total. Bates is the fourth highest-paid safety in NFL history.

Bates gives Atlanta a top-end secondary safety for new defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen to go with cornerback AJ Terrell, who the team picked in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft. Bates is also offering Atlanta flexibility in the defensive backfield as the team keep their two starters from last season safe – Jaylinn Hawkins and Richie Grant.

Bates becomes the sixth player to either agree terms or sign to the Falcons on Monday. New Orleans Saints defensive tackle David Onyemata reached an agreement with the team, earning Pro Bowl right guard Chris Lindstrom a five-year extension to 2028 — signed punter Bradley Pinion to a three-year contract and fullback Keith Smith for a one-year contract.

Bates, who started 79 games in five seasons with the Bengals, recorded a career-high four interceptions last season and counted eight pass deflections for one of the most effective pass defenses in the league.

Cincinnati led the NFL in opposing completion percentage in 2022, keeping quarterbacks at the third-lowest overall QBR in the league, according to research by ESPN Stats & Information. When Bates was the next defender, opponents were held below expectations at -8.7 completion percentage, according to NFL Next Gen Stats.

With exaggerated post and split-field range and a history of creating on-the-ball production with his 14 career interceptions, Bates easily fits into both single-high and two-deep schemes.

He played the 2022 season on the year-long franchise tag after he and the Bengals failed to agree a long-term extension with him for two straight seasons. As the team neared the end of its season, the 2018 second-round pick from Wake Forest said he knew he could play elsewhere in 2023.

“I’ve been emotional for a long time,” Bates said on Jan. 30. “I’m still deaf. ‘Gratitude’ is the word I can use to really describe everything that has happened here over the past five years. “

Bates, who turned 26 in February, has 3 forced fumbles (2 recoveries) along with 478 tackles and 43 passes defended. He scored his only touchdown during his rookie season.

ESPN’s Ben Baby and Matt Bowen contributed to this report.

Jay’s manager John Schneider told Sportsnet on Monday, adding that his charge made progress during his recovery over the weekend. Guerrero Jr. continues to recover from a sore right knee that forced him out of the March 3 exhibition game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

“He said he felt great, which is great,” Schneider said. Hopefully he gets a lot of trail running this year; he must therefore continue his preparation. You’ll probably see him in action over the next few days, assuming he’s feeling good after his workout today.

The 23-year-old wants to look his best when the Jays visit the St. Louis Cardinals on March 30 to open the campaign. “I will take everything calmly and not rush things,” he promised two days after his fall in the fight. I will continue to follow treatments and when my knee says it’s ready I will be.”

In 160 games last year, the slugger hit a total of 32 home runs and 97 RBIs.

New Chiefs OL Jawaan Taylor could play left tackle in

New Chiefs OL Jawaan Taylor could play left tackle in Kansas City – Chiefs Wire

The Kansas City Chiefs secured an offensive tackle in free agency, but the position he could play is undecided.

Jawaan Taylor is set to become the Chiefs’ newest member, but numerous reports suggest he could play a position he doesn’t have much NFL experience in. The Chiefs have reportedly backed away from LT Orlando Brown Jr. and could tackle Taylor on the left side of the offensive line.

Taylor played 18 snaps per PFF in left tackle last season with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but he has thousands of snaps of NFL experience on the right side of the offensive line. He started a few games on the left tackle during the 2017 college football season with the Florida Gators, but the majority of his experience came back on the right tackle in college. He never missed a game during his NFL career, no matter where he played.

So the Chiefs could test Orlando Brown Jr.’s route again. They traded for Brown in the 2021 NFL offseason, moving him to the left side of the offensive line after spending most of his NFL career in right tackle. They seem to feel that Taylor has the athleticism and ability to switch sides seamlessly without losing the benefits of his pass blocking ability.

There also remains the possibility of Kansas City finding their left tackle of the future in the 2023 NFL draft, but this gives them some flexibility now to deviate from that train of thought. It also doesn’t hurt to have a player in the house who you think can play both left and right, as Chiefs fans have learned all too well at Super Bowl LV.

Parental pettiness in football

Parental pettiness in football

During the last World Cup, young Gio Reyna’s limited playing time unleashed a saga for the American team, the magnitude of which nobody could have foreseen and which finally came to an end on Monday.

To understand this, one must first know that the US team’s head coach during the tournament, Gregg Berhalter, was a good friend of young Reyna’s parents, whose father is Claudio Reyna, a former player.

All of which brings us to December 11, when Claudio and his wife Danielle are on the phone with Football Association Athletic Director Earnie Stewart.

The couple confide in him that Gregg Berhalter was involved in an incident of domestic violence with his then-partner Rosalind Santana. She has gone by the name Rosalind Berhalter for more than twenty years and is Gregg’s wife.

That revelation sparked an investigation by law firm Alston & Bird, the findings of which emerged in a report published on Monday. This relieves Berhalter and lifts the veil over the dark side of the Reyna family.

incident

So let’s rewind the tape 30 years to 1992, when Gregg Berhalter was a freshman at the University of North Carolina, where he also played football for the school’s Tar Heels team. On a drunken night, he argues with his girlfriend.

Even before the investigation was opened, Berhalter himself disclosed the details of the incident in a very commendable transparency campaign.

In the report submitted by Alston & Bird, there is a version that is consistent with the version submitted by Berhalter last January.

“The couple are at a bar and the drinks are piling up when they start arguing. Then they leave the establishment and the argument continues. Outside, Ms. Berhalter punches Mr. Berhalter in the face, he pushes her, she falls to the ground and he kicks her twice,” the report said.

Berhalter is then pinned to the ground by passers-by. He quickly realizes his mistake, confesses what he did to his coach, seeks psychological help, and the pair reconcile seven months later.

intimidation

The report thus exonerates Berhalter and while the Reynas also get away with it, the report reveals Claudio Reyna’s tendency to interfere in the affairs of the American FA when things are not going well for him, particularly when it comes to his children.

According to a person not named in the report, his behavior was described as “inappropriate,” “intimidating,” and “meaningful.”

It all started in 2016 when his son Gio, who is now a member of Borussia Dortmund, was part of the federation’s youth teams and played for the New York City FC academy.

Claudio Reyna initially complained about the presence of a woman in a quartet of referees. “Can we be serious and have a man referee a game like this,” he wrote in an email. He also complains about the Under-17 coach, Raphaël Wicky. “He’s the worst coach,” he wrote at the time.

“When things don’t go well for Gio, the Reynas turn around and go into attack mode,” Greg Berhalter told investigators leading the case. Then he talks about a couple of friends whose way of working he knows well.

turning point

Back in December 2022. Even if the Reynas are unhappy with their son’s playing time in Qatar, everything seems to be back to normal after the Americans were eliminated in the round of 16 at the World Cup.

On the way back, Gregg Berhalter stops in New York to attend a HOW Institute for Society summit. In what he considers casual conversation, he tells the story of a player he almost sent home for his behavior during the World Cup. He doesn’t name names, but a few hours later it’s confirmed to be Reyna. It is then December 11th.

In the report, we learn that following those comments, Claudio Reyna sent a series of text messages to Earnie Stewart, and that the couple then had Reyna an hour-long phone call with Stewart, during which he revealed the 1992 incident.

Stewart immediately reported the allegations to the United States Soccer Federation, which prompted an investigation by Alston & Bird.

jeopardized future

The behavior of the Reyna couple, who are likely no longer friends with the Berhalter family, has certainly jeopardized Gregg’s career.

His contract with the men’s national team expired on December 31 and he was expected to lead the team to the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The federation stated that he was still one of the candidates as it did not withhold information about the 1992 incident. Meanwhile, Earnie Stewart, who hired him in 2018, made his way from the Netherlands, where he took a job at PSV Eindhoven.

In a statement released on Monday, the federation said the recruitment process to replace Stewart as sporting director was underway.

Gregg Berhalter’s career is on hold. At least for now.
