The end of the 49ers’ season frees defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans to be hired elsewhere as head coach. As expected, he travels to Houston this week for a second interview.

NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reports that “if all goes well,” the Texans will name the Ryans their new head coach.

That was expected when the search began, as the Texan fanbase clamored for Ryans, who played his first six seasons in Houston. With two Pro Bowls, he became a fan favorite.

The Texans have had four head coaches in the past three seasons. They fired Bill O’Brien during the 2020 season, with Romeo Crennel ending as caretaker manager before David Culley and Lovie Smith became lone head coaches.

Since their last playoff appearance in 2019, the Texans are 11-38-1. They hold the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 draft after winning their final game of the season and losing the No. 1 overall pick to Chicago.

Ryans oversaw the No. 1 NFL total defense in yards and points in 2022.

The Broncos also reportedly had Ryans as a top option as their head coaching job remains open.

Bengals vs Chiefs live updates KC lead by 10 points

Bengals vs. Chiefs live updates: KC lead by 10 points in AFC title game

It’s time for a replay in Kansas City as Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals take on Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs for the second straight AFC Championship Game at Arrowhead Stadium.

The winner advances to Super Bowl LVII in Arizona (February 12, 6:30 p.m. ET on FOX and the FOX Sports App), where he meets the Philadelphia Eagles, who defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31-7. in the NFC title game earlier on FOX.

Here are the highlights!

Cincinnati Bengals with the Kansas City Chiefs

Clark catches Burrow

Frank Clark ended the Bengals’ opening run when he dropped Burrow for a 10-yard loss in third place, forcing Cincinnati to poke.

Travis time

It was unknown what impact Travis Kelce would have on Sunday’s game as he sustained a back injury during Friday’s practice session. It didn’t seem to bother him on Kansas City’s opening drive, however, as he made a hold on the Chiefs’ third play and batted for 16 yards.

Too hard

Kadarius Toney came so close to a touchdown catch on the Chiefs’ opening drive. However, he was unable to secure the grip when he hit the ground, making it an incomplete pass.

Kansas City challenged the game, but the on-field call was sustained. However, the Chiefs managed to score three points on the drive when Harrison connected Butker with a 43-yard field goal on the next play.

Back-to-back sacks

The Bengals’ offensive line struggled early on. After allowing a third-down sack on the first drive, the unit gave up sacks on the second drive in back-to-back plays.

Willie Gay came in second with second to make it third and 18th. Then Chiefs star defensive tackle Chris Jones came up with the sack on the next game — his first sack of the postseason.

trickery!

The Chiefs moved the ball back up the field on their second drive of the game. As they made their way into Bengal territory, Kelce made another first-down dig. But right after catching, Kelce threw the ball to Jerick McKinnon on his left. The throw wasn’t clean, but the McKinnon fell on it to ensure Kansas City retained possession.

Isiah Pacheco made it into the end zone a few plays later, but the touchdown was wiped off the board due to a holding penalty. So the Chiefs went for three again and took a 6-0 lead early in the second quarter.

Four is a party!

George Karlaftis provided the Chiefs with the sacking fun, helping them to their fourth sack in the Bengals’ first three drives of the game.

That hurts

Bengals tight end Hayden Hurst was this close to getting into third place with a touchdown grab. Burrow’s pass to him in the end zone went through his hands and went incomplete, forcing Cincy to settle for three and make it a 6-3 game.

MVS on the move

Marques Valdez-Scantling chased down a pass from Mahomes while running off the ball the other way and pulled in a 29-yard catch to put the Chiefs deep in Bengals territory.

Travis TD

The Chiefs settled for fourth place, and the decision paid off. After buying time by scrambling around, Mahomes found Kelce 1-on-1 in the end zone for the first touchdown of the game to make it 13-3 late in the first half.

Canadians Barring a miracle Carey Price wont be returning

Carey Price and his family will leave Quebec

For those who doubted that Carey Price’s career was really over, Montreal Canadiens goaltender Angela’s wife gave a big hint that the masked man is about to enter a different phase in his life.

On Sunday, the woman answered questions on her Instagram account. He was asked if his family would be back in Montreal next year.

“Looks like we’ll be returning to Kelowna after hockey season and if Liv [la plus vieille des enfants des Price] finish school,” Angela said.

The latter then responded to a subscriber who asked if the couple were selling their home.

“Yes, we do,” she said. Saying goodbye to this house and especially to our neighbors will be difficult for us.”

Carey Price was unable to play this year due to a recurring knee injury. Last October, the masked man said it would take a “small miracle” to return to the game one day.

His name was placed on the long-term injury list ahead of the start of this season and could remain so until the end of his contract at the end of the 2025-2026 season.

Price was selected in the first round (fifth overall) of the 2005 draft. In 712 games in a Habs uniform, he had a record of 361-261-79, 2.51 goals against average and a .917 batting efficiency. He won the Hart, Vézina, Jennings and Pearson trophies in 2015, then the Masterton trophy in 2021-2022.

The 35-year-old has missed most of this season due to injuries and personal reasons, making just five appearances in April. He went 1-4 with 3.63 goals against average and .878 save percentage.

Mike McCarthy announces plays as cowboys part ways with Kellen

Mike McCarthy announces plays as cowboys part ways with Kellen Moore

Kellen Moore’s tenure as the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator has ended.

His successor has already been determined.

The club and Moore made a so-called joint decision to part ways, and teams in the NFL looking for a coordinator are aware of Moore’s status, several people familiar with the outcome told The Dallas Morning News. Head coach Mike McCarthy will assume in-game duties following Moore’s departure, a person with knowledge of the reorganization said.

Moore’s position on the workforce has dominated discussions between McCarthy, owner Jerry Jones and executive vice president Stephen Jones at The Star over the past 48 hours. Replacing Moore as the game caller was only part of the equation. The goal was to see if the Cowboys could improve the spot.

McCarthy is the only coach on the current team who lives up to that expectation. McCarthy won a Super Bowl calling plays in Green Bay, but he was reluctant to do so when he took the job in Dallas three years ago, saying he wanted to keep the same system and mechanics to make quarterback Dak comfortable as possible to make Prescott.

The idea was that familiarity is the best path for Prescott to continue growing as a quarterback. But that season, Prescott suffered a career-high 15 interceptions and threw two in the playoff loss to San Francisco. There was no progress.

The current offensive staff build suggests the Cowboys will be looking outside of the organization to fill a non-game calling coordinator role. Quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier, whose contract has expired, is also likely to fall victim to this change of direction.

Moore, who has one year left on his contract, just interviewed for the Carolina head coaching position that went to Frank Reich. Moore would be an attractive candidate for several of the offensive coordinators available in the league.

The club issued a press release on Thursday, ahead of McCarthy’s end-of-season press conference, listing six managers whose contracts would not be renewed. If a decision had to be made about Moore, some wondered why it wasn’t announced at this time.

The reason: Moore applied to Carolina for the job as head coach. He and McCarthy met just before Thursday’s press conference. The two didn’t have a chance to chat and conduct Moore’s assessment until Friday.

When McCarthy was asked directly in that press conference whether Moore would return as coordinator, he dodged the question.

“I really don’t want to play this game today,” the Cowboys head coach told reporters. “It’s been a long few days.

“Kellen Moore, like the rest of the coaches, will be evaluated. Each trainer is rated. The evaluation takes more than a day.”

The Cowboys averaged 27.5 points in fourth place in the NFL during the regular season. They did so despite Prescott missing five games with a broken thumb on his throwing hand.

Dallas led the league last year with an average of 31.2 points and a franchise-record 530 points.

So why is the organization moving on? One reason is the disconnect between regular season production and the playoffs.

The Cowboys averaged just 14.5 points in their two postseason losses to San Francisco over the past 13 months. Dallas scored just six points and failed to find an end zone in the second half of their 19-12 divisional round loss to the 49ers to end this season.

Another reason is the slump in Prescott’s performance. His 15 interceptions were the league’s worst total, though he missed five games with a broken thumb on his throwing hand.

Prescott was drafted by the Cowboys in 2016. He immediately moved up the depth chart in training camp when Moore, the team’s backup quarterback at the time for Tony Romo, broke his leg early in camp.

Moore did not play that season, but he worked closely with the rookie throughout the season and was credited with helping him adapt to the pro game. Moore retired at the end of the next season and was asked by then-coach Jason Garrett to join his staff as Prescott’s quarterbacks coach.

When the offensive coordinator job became vacant at the end of the 2018 season, Prescott worked to get Moore the job. McCarthy had never worked with Moore when he took over as the Cowboys’ head coach in January 2020. Moore wasn’t part of the same coaching tree, yet McCarthy made the decision to keep him as offensive coordinator.

Why? Chris Petersen was Moore’s college coach. McCarthy recalled how much Petersen thought of Moore as a player and his football spirit, coming from Boise State.

McCarthy also saw how Prescott had evolved from his rookie season and was quick to recognize the bond the quarterback had forged with Moore. As he sat down and spoke to Moore, he was convinced that it was best for the Cowboys if Moore stayed.

“I thought it was definitely for Dak’s best, and I told Dak that when we were talking football,” McCarthy said after taking over as Cowboys coach. “It’s his fault. I want him to have the same offense throughout his career.”

The criminal offense remains.

But for the first time in Prescott’s career with the Cowboys, Moore will not be with him. There will be a new voice in the quarterback’s ear.

And it will be McCarthy who names the pieces.

1675037965 Trent Williams and KVon Wallace eliminated from NFC championship game

Trent Williams and K’Von Wallace eliminated from NFC championship game after skirmish between Eagles and 49ers

NFC Championship - San Francisco 49ers vs. Philadelphia Eagles

The NFC Championship game between the Eagles and 49ers got a little bumpy as Philadelphia continued to chew the clock en route to a 31-7 Super Bowl berth. In the final minutes of the fourth quarter, both teams fought on the field after a six-yard run by Christian McCaffrey.

The push and shove split into two distinct stacks, and tempers really flared in the stack closest to midfield, which featured 49ers star tackle Trent Williams and Eagles safety K’Von Wallace.

As officers attempted to separate the players and defuse the situation, Williams grabbed Wallace and yanked him to the ground as players walked onto the field from both touchlines. Flags waved and officials ordered both teams to their respective sidelines while simultaneously announcing that Williams and Wallace had been knocked out of the game.

It was a frustrating way for San Francisco to end the season as quarterback injuries continued to dictate the franchise. Brock Purdy, who rose to stardom after injuries to Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo later in the year, injured his elbow in the first quarter and fourth-stringer Josh Johnson was thrown into the fight. Johnson then suffered a concussion that left the 49ers without a healthy quarterback to try and help them get through in the NFC title game. With that in mind, San Francisco’s frustrations in this altercation appear to stem from this and could lead to even more punishment from the NFL.

As for the Eagles, who have now punched a ticket to Super Bowl LVII, they will now see if the actions of anyone in this bout – including Wallace – will have any bearing on their status in the big game in the eyes of the US League.
