John Tavares celebrates his 1000th game with a win

Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares used his 1,000. National Hockey League (NHL) game to record two assists in Sunday’s 5-1 win over the Washington Capitals at Scotiabank Arena.

The veteran was involved in the successes of Michael Bunting and Morgan Rielly. Both goals came in the second period.

William Nylander, Pierre Engvall and Zach Aston-Reese were the other scorers in the Queen City squad, while Nicklas Backstrom was the only Caps representative to beat goalkeeper Ilya Samsonov.

It was the Swedish center player’s first success of the 2022-2023 season. Backstrom only played his ninth game of the season after recovering from a serious hip injury.

Going back to Tavares, it was his 331st game in a Maple Leafs jersey. The Queen City organization signed him in the summer of 2018 via the free agent market. The 32-year-old athlete played the first nine seasons of his career with the New York Islanders.

Ahead of the day’s game, the Leafs made an urgent call to goaltender Joseph Woll regarding Matt Murray’s injury.

The latter aggravated his ankle injury while warming up for Friday’s game against the Ottawa Senators.

Woll made 13 appearances for the Toronto Marlies of the AHL and suffered just one loss in 2022-23.

Elsewhere, defenseman TJ Brodie returned to the ice against the Capitals. The Ontarian missed the last ten games of his training session due to a rib injury.

Also, Toronto sent Bobby McMann to his farm club. In eight National League games this season, he was disqualified from the goalscoring list.
