Submerged champagne cellar (cellar in the sea): location and information
What’s on offer for champagne lovers is something truly incredible: the opportunity to taste a Veuve Clicquot underwater at a depth of 131 feet. The cellar of this well-known champagne brand is actually at the bottom of the sea and can be visited on special request by enthusiasts and the curious. In fact, it’s off the coast of Baltic Sea and was given the name “basement in the sea“, or a flooded basement off the coast ofÅland archipelagobetween Sweden and Finland, in a place that seems like a fairy tale.
It all started with a sensational discovery in 2010, when the remains of a ship loaded with Veuve Clicquot champagne, which sank in 1840, were found on the seabed of this archipelago. The discovery gave rise to the idea of starting this project from the name “basement in the sea“, which was very appreciated, also because this famous champagne was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site and being able to taste it under water is priceless. One could imagine a real itinerary, starting at the Maison’s headquarters in Reims, France, and then leading up to the Maison’s magnificent landscapes Åland Islands in front of the Baltic Sea.
Once here you will be guided by the famous sommelier Veuve Clicquot. Didier Mariotti, which will take you to the underwater cellar where you can taste Maison’s bubbles in the midst of the underwater world for a unique experience. In this magnificent place you can also taste dishes from the best starred chefs. You can even meet the diver who discovered the wreck of the ship in 2010, who can also be accompanied by diving enthusiasts to visit the spectacular “Aland Vault”, the place where the treasure with the submerged bottles is found.
