14yearold teenager Harris Wolobah died after accepting a viral challenge to eat spicy cake on social network TikTok. The case occurred last Friday (01) in Massachusetts in the United States.
Before his death, the student had taken part in the “One Chip Challenge” in which he ate a tortilla made from extremely hot peppers. The young man felt unwell at school and his mother took him home, where he died last Friday (01).
According to the Worcester Police Department in Massachusetts, Harris was being attended to by police and paramedics when he died. The family wrote on social media that the pain they were experiencing was “unimaginable” and that the boy was “a light who lit up the room with his presence and subtle charm.” He was an intelligent, eccentric and incredibly talented young man.”
Worcester police could not provide an official cause of death and the family said an autopsy was underway. In the same post, the family wrote: “Harris passed away unexpectedly at the age of 14 due to what we suspect were complications from the One Chip Challenge, but an autopsy is pending.”
The food, made by the Paqui company, was made from Carolina Reaper and Naga Viper peppers, two of the hottest in the world. On TikTok, the hashtag “#OneChipChallenge” has more than two billion views.
The company released a video about the challenge on YouTube on August 9 this year. The company’s website notes that it is intended for adult consumption.
Paqui also advises the public to seek medical attention if they experience difficulty breathing, fainting or persistent nausea. The Lafayette County school system in Louisiana banned dining on all district campuses after several students required medical attention due to the challenge.
