A horrific bus crash in southern Mexico killed at least 16 migrants, including three children, on Friday, officials said.
The passenger bus was carrying about 55 Venezuelan and Peruvian asylum seekers in the state of Oaxaca when it overturned, Mexico’s State Protection Coordination said said on X, formerly known as Twitter.
According to the National Migration Institute, at least three of the migrants killed are children, as well as two women and eleven men.
Twenty-nine others were injured, but there was no immediate information about their condition.
The massacre was so serious that the NMI initially reported 18 dead, but later lowered the figure, claiming there had been an overcount because some of the bodies had been dismembered.
The cause of the accident and whether other vehicles were involved is still unclear.
Photos of the accident show the passenger bus lying on its side in a winding section of the highway with its roof torn off.
The windows on the left side of the bus were broken, leaving what appeared to be luggage and parts of the vehicle strewn across the street.

Salomón Jara Cruz, the governor of Oaxaca, said state officials, along with several other national, state and local authorities, were providing assistance to those involved in the crash.
“We deeply regret the fatal accident on the Oaxaca-Cuacnopalan highway that claimed the lives of several migrants.” he said on X. “Our condolences go out to the families of the deceased and all our solidarity and support goes out to the injured.”
The surviving migrants will be given a visitor card for humanitarian reasons so that they can continue to receive medical care abroad, the NMI said.

The tragic crash is the latest in a string of migrant deaths in Mexico as the number of migrants traveling toward the U.S. border increases.
Last week, 10 Cuban migrants – including a minor – died and 17 others were seriously injured after a truck they were traveling in crashed on a highway in the neighboring state of Chiapas, near the border with Guatemala.
The institute said the driver of the vehicle appeared to be speeding and lost control of the truck, which was carrying 27 migrants at the time. The driver fled the scene of the accident.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.Portal
Also in the same Mexican state last week, a truck overturned on a highway in Chiapas, killing two Central American migrants and injuring another 27.
An overwhelming number of migrants have made the dangerous journey across the Mexican border to seek asylum in the United States.
In September alone, more than 260,000 migrants entered the United States – a new monthly record that rivals the population of citizens living in St. Petersburg, Florida.
