Matty Healy announced The 1975 will be taking an “indefinite break” as he spoke on stage on the opening night of the band’s live tour on Tuesday.
The 34-year-old frontman performed at the Golden 1 Center in California, where he stunned fans as he lay next to a life-size nude wax figure of himself.
Towards the end of the set, Matty announced that the band – lead guitarist Adam Hann, bassist Ross MacDonald and drummer and main producer George Daniel – were planning to take a break.
He said: “It is wonderful that you are all here. After this tour we will be taking an indefinite break from shows, so it’s wonderful to have you with us tonight. “Thank you very much.”
The band will next perform in San Jose and San Diego before embarking on a tour to Los Angeles in October and the UK and Europe next year.

Matty, who was banned from performing in Malaysia after kissing his male bandmate in July to protest anti-LGBT laws, raised eyebrows when the wax figure appeared on stage.

The break comes as The 1975 face legal action after they condemned Malaysia’s anti-gay laws during a performance at the Good Vibes Festival in Kuala Lumpur.

Lead singer Matty sparked outrage when he criticized the country’s stance on homosexuality before kissing his bandmate Ross MacDonald on stage – leading to the music festival’s complete shutdown.
Homosexuality is illegal in Malaysia and laws criminalizing sodomy are punishable by prison. Authorities also regularly discriminate against LGBTQ people in the country, and human rights groups have warned of growing intolerance.
Organizers Future Sound Asia (FSA) are now taking legal action against the Manchester-based group of four, demanding they be held liable for the collapse of the event and paid compensation for any damage caused by the incident.
According to the FSA, the outspoken Healy “damaged” Good Vibes’ reputation and “willfully breached the agreement.” [the band] had with FSA”.
