A 30-year-old Californian who hit a $2 billion Powerball payday has bought a $4 million mansion in California – just days after settling on a sprawling $25 million estate had let off steam in the nearby Hollywood Hills.
Edwin Castro, who won the jackpot after buying a ticket at his local gas station, added the aesthetic five-bedroom, five-bathroom home to his real estate portfolio eight days after closing the deal for his first mega-mansion.
Surrounded by tropical palm trees and a stunning mountain backdrop, his new Japanese-inspired property features modern finishes and a sun-drenched Zen terrace worthy of a billionaire lottery winner.
Manicured gardens and a sun-drenched pool complete the exterior of the home, while the interior is filled with a host of luxurious amenities.
Castro’s recent property purchase is surrounded by tropical palm trees and a breathtaking mountain backdrop. The $4 million property features modern finishes and a sun-drenched Zen patio. A huge island with granite top and an open kitchen – the living room design gives the room a modern feel
The Altadena home is a short drive from Castro, and sources told TMZ the unexpected billionaire comes from a “healthy family.”
A former high school athlete, Castro rose through the ranks of the Boy Scout program before studying architecture at Woodbury University in Burbank – although his college years clearly contributed to his eye for luxury real estate.
His latest acquisitions include his own home theater, private office, and expensive artworks that are sure to be enhanced given Castro’s hefty new bank balance.
Surrounding the property is a stunning courtyard oasis with an authentic Zen garden and saltwater pool that serves as the ideal escape from the California heat.
A gourmet open plan kitchen and living room are the focal points of the home, including a breakfast bar and huge granite island.
Sliding doors open onto a tropical garden, while surround sound speakers are placed throughout the lavish home.
And after receiving the $997 million lump sum payout last month after his November win, his new California home cost less than half a percent of Castro’s lottery jackpot.
The Japanese-inspired home is described as “harmonious,” complete with a sun-drenched patio and lush gardens. Opulent amenities include a private screening room. A cozy fireplace is also built into the interior of the Californian grounds alongside a stylish built-in clock
The listing for the property describes it as a “harmonious” living space with first class finishes in every corner of the house.
“Prepare to be stunned as you step through the oversized pivoting front door, where you’ll be greeted by rich jatoba wood floors,” it says.
‘Turning right you enter the dramatic living room with a recessed lighting design, floor to ceiling windows that bathe the home in natural light and overlook the beautiful Japanese well manicured gardens which are a theme throughout the home.’
The California home also features a two-car garage, solar energy system, and electric vehicle charging port.
The five-bedroom, five-bathroom home cost less than half a percent of Castro’s lottery jackpot. Castro’s latest purchase is also pictured with expensive artwork to match his Japanese design – which will certainly be improved given his hefty new bank balance. Amenities include a separate lounge area, rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, a solar energy system and an electric vehicle charging port
If Castro is fed up with the $4 million estate, he’s only about 20 miles away from his second California complex, which he bought for $25 million just eight days earlier.
Castro’s larger estate, which he acquired less than a month after his surprise Powerball win, lies behind the legendary suites of the Chateau Marmont.
The sprawling 13,578-square-foot hillside home with neighbors Ariana Grande and Jimmy Kimmel features a full outdoor kitchen, gym, wine cellar, and infinity pool.
It also features an infinity pool, cinema and sauna, as well as two separate garages that can accommodate up to seven cars.
The pad was first listed for $30 million in July 2022, but it seems Castro managed to shave $4.5 million off the total price.
Castro previously bought a $25.5 million Hollywood Hills mansion, and the billionaire can count the likes of Ariana Grande and Jimmy Kimmel among his new neighbors. The 30-year-old’s winning ticket was sold at the Joe Service Center in Altadena, California
Other amenities include a games room and bar, and a fitness center with a hot and cold pool, dry sauna and steam shower.
Meanwhile, the double-height glass staircase offers expansive city views, while two fire pits and a built-in BBQ area sit outside.
His real estate expansion comes after it was revealed that Castro is being sued by a fellow Californian who claims he had the winning ticket and it was stolen from him.
Despite the legal challenge, Castro reportedly demanded the $997 million lump sum payout just last month after receiving the winning ticket in November.
At the time of the win, lottery director Alva Johnson said Castro wished to remain private and had declined an invitation from lottery officials to attend the press conference.
In a prepared statement, Castro said, “As much as I am shocked and thrilled to have won the Powerball drawing, the real winner is the California public school system.”
Public schools in California act as beneficiaries of the state lottery.
This means that the education system received over $156 million as a result of the record-breaking win.
