More than 20,000 people gathered in Bunol, Spain on Wednesday to throw 130 tons of rotten tomatoes at each other.
The “La Tomatina” festival has a 75-year tradition for the city, but they have been forced to halt the practice for the past two years due to COVID-19. Photos show partygoers covered from head to toe in tomato puree, and many have the foresight to wear goggles.
According to Portal, the truckloads of rotten and otherwise unwanted fruit started arriving by midday, and participants fired them at each other for more than an hour.
The origins of the festival are murky, but according to tradition, a similar fight spontaneously erupted between residents in 1945.
