2022 Masters Leaderboard, Results: World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler makes history, wins first career major

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The world’s No. 1 golfer has won the sport’s No. 1 major. Scottie Scheffler dominated the final three rounds of the 2022 Masters en route to a green jacket, a record $2.7 million payout and further entrenchment as the world’s hottest golfer by posting a 10-under 278 on Sunday won first career major.

Scheffler became the fifth golfer to enter the world at No. 1 Augusta National and win the Masters, along with Ian Woosnam (1991), Fred Couples (1992), Tiger Woods (2001-02) and Dustin Johnson (2020). .

The win was his fourth on the PGA Tour that season, making him the first golfer since Arnold Palmer in 1960 — and only the second ever — to win as many events, including the Masters, in that span of a season to begin with JustinRay.

Scheffler is so hyper that he actually won all four of those PGA Tour events in just 57 days, which is the shortest stretch from first to fourth win in PGA Tour history. This was only his third career appearance at Augusta National.

The Masters champion has been great all week. A 69 on Round 1 made him an immediate contender and he took a five-shot lead with a 67 on Round 2 over 36 holes. Despite slipping with a 71 on Saturday and giving up some of the ground gained to Cameron Smith, it was Scheffler who stood strong and slightly increased his lead while Smith was out on Sunday.

Smith put significant pressure on Scheffler early on, reducing his deficit to a single shot on the second hole after back-to-back birdies to open Round 4. Smith bogeyed the 3rd hole, however, when Scheffler made a shot so remarkable that it might not have cemented his win, but it still breathed new life into his championship boost.

After finding the pine needles with his second shot on the 3rd, Scheffler failed to get his ball up the hill and onto the green. It turned into a probable par and a potential bogey. Instead, Scheffler potted with authority in what many will consider the shot of the tournament.

In fact, Scheffler’s greatest test came not from Smith but from Rory McIlroy, who as a four-time Major winner put together one of the best Sunday rounds in Masters history as he hoped to finally break through with a green jacket and a career grand slam. McIlroy posted the lowest Sunday round in Masters history with 8 under 64 and took the clubhouse lead for the tournament with 7 under. Smith finished the tournament with 1 over for the day and 5 under for the tournament.

Scheffler was undeterred. He was on the line with back-to-back birdies in places 14-15 to extend his lead to five and eliminate any doubt that he would claim this Masters – and the 2022 golf season – as his own. While his confidence never faltered, his nerves undoubtedly got the better of him on the 18th green as Scheffler ran manageable 7-foot par and 5-foot bogey putts past the hole.

Scheffler took a deep breath, listened to the guests lift him up with shouts of “Sco-ttie, Sco-ttie,” and pocketed his 3-foot double bogey putt, 1 under for the round, 10 under for the tournament and last to finish man eligible for a green jacket in Augusta.
