With the 2022 World Series moving to Philadelphia, the Astros’ meal has become a source of controversy. At least one local restaurant has reportedly received backlash from Houston fans after failing to accommodate the Astros’ request for catering.
Angelo’s Pizzeria turned down Astros when approached about a potential catering deal. Angelo’s was originally accused of delivering groceries to Houston, but they firmly denied that claim in an Instagram story.
After this post appeared on social media, owner Danny DiGiampietro said the restaurant immediately received backlash from Houston fans on social media. DiGiampietro told the New York Post that Angelo’s just couldn’t take the Astros on at such short notice.
“We have no problem cooking for everyone,” DiGiampietro said. “The problem was that it was just so late. I have to be here at 3, 4 in the morning to bake all the bread. There was just no way, so it didn’t work out.
“People tell me there are stories that we malnourished the Astros and left all that behind, and that wasn’t the case at all. There was no nefarious intent and no ill will.”
When Houston fans received the store’s information, “all hell broke loose” for Angelo’s, according to DiGiampietro. Some Houston fans even found DiGiampietro’s home address and license plate and shared it online.
A Twitter user claims to be a cousin of one of Angelo’s employees claims Astros fans called with bomb threats. DiGiampietro also claimed callers have been harassing the store for the past few days.
“There’s TikTok challenges to throw cheesesteaks in my face, you get $250… The girls [working at Angelos] said people with Southern accents were ringing the phones telling us to eat ‘Eat St’ and order pizzas,” DiGiampietro said. “It became this whole thing, then it got picked up by news outlets.”
It was also believed that Mike’s BBQ shot down the Astros and was asked about catering for the team based on a screenshot posted by the restaurant, but the establishment stated that they would not refuse food to anyone. Instead, Houston had the wrong information and Mike directed the team to the right restaurant.
The Astros need some nourishment after the Phillies hammered them 7-0 in Game 3 to take a 2-1 lead in the series. Houston needs a win in the worst possible way on Wednesday night or the Phillies have a chance to end the streak at home on Thursday.
Game 4 begins at 8:03 p.m. ET on Fox and will stream on fuboTV (try free), with the Phillies bringing Aaron Nola back on the mound for the start. He will be up against the Astros’ Cristian Javier, who threw 5 1/3 shutout innings against the New York Yankees in his last appearance.
