Rahal was dramatically knocked off the field by Rahal Letterman Lanigan’s teammate Jack Harvey in a desperate last-second qualifying run on Sunday afternoon.
Legge and Wilson fell in Monday practice
The first accident of the month of May happened in practice seven when Katherine Legge and Stefan Wilson crashed into each other at Turn 1 with about 50 minutes left in the session. Running in a pack down the front track, Legge was unable to slow her car sufficiently and ran into the rear of Wilson, throwing both of them into the wall.
Wilson gave the crowd a thumbs-up as he was placed on a backboard before being transported to Infield Medical Center while Legge exited her car under her own power. Track’s medical staff said Wilson was communicative and in good spirits and would be transferred to an area hospital for advanced imaging.

Harvey shocks Rahal in Last Chance qualifying
Five minutes from the end of Sunday’s Last Chance qualifying session, Jack Harvey was out of the Indianapolis 500 field. At the end of what appeared to be his final heat, he was still out of the 33 field. But the team and Harvey made the decision to run one last, to complete a desperate run without the luxury of cooling the engine. Harvey crossed the finish line to complete the final run with seconds to go, edging Rahal Letterman Lanigan’s teammate Graham Rahal out of the field by 0.004 seconds.
Indy 500 Qualifier Format
There are 34 competitors fighting for 33 starting spots at the 107th Indianapolis 500. Qualifying is split over two days, with the bulk of the field taking place during the seven-hour marathon session on Saturday. Sunday will see sessions for the last three places – and an elimination – as well as the top 12 and top 6 shootout for pole. The riders’ average speed over a four-lap run determines their placement.
Qualifying Day 1 – Saturday 20th May
Grid locations 13-30 locked
• After each car has had a chance in a four-lap race, it can choose one of two lanes to then try to improve its times. Lane 1 has priority access to the track, however teams will have to give up their previous qualifying speed to get there.
Qualifying Day 2 – Sunday 21st May
Starting places 1-12 and 31-33 are secured
•The top 12 cars will compete in the first hour-long session, with 7th-12th places being determined.
• The last four cars have one hour to decide who makes it and who doesn’t, with places 31-33 tied.
• Finally, the top six cars get a 30 minute session to determine pole position up to sixth place.

Indy 500 2023 weather forecast
As the first week of practice for the 107th Indianapolis 500 begins, rain threatens to hamper two days of racing at the track — the first two sessions on Tuesday, May 16, and “Fast Friday,” May 19. Otherwise cool temperatures around 60 degrees and low 70’s with scattered cloud cover are forecast. But since this is the Midwest, conditions are subject to change.
