2023 NCAA Men’s Championships: Day 1 Relay Splits Analysis – SwimSwam

2023 NCAA DIVISION I MEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Opening night of the 2023 NCAA Men’s Championship was nothing short of sensational.

Not only did we see new NCAA and US Open records fall in both seasons (plus an American record in the 800 free relay), but we also had some of the fastest split times in history.

In the relay over 200 layers Leon Marchand posted the fastest 50 breaststroke split ever at 22.27, a swim that surpassed the Minnesota-set mark of 22.39 Max McHugh two runs earlier.

Alabama Derek Maas also went 22.39, giving today’s race the three fastest breast splits in history.

We have also seen Nyls Korstanje Deliver the second-fastest fly split ever in 19.15 for the record-breaking NC State followed by Jordan Crooks‘ 19.27 for Tennessee, which ranks third behind the 18.94 he produced at SECs.

On Freestyle, Florida Josh Liendo his SEC 200 free relay split of 18.02 was followed by a staggering 18.03, while an incredible 10 teams had splits that were 18.50 or faster.

In the 800m free relay, Texas’ record-breaking swim was led by a sophomore Luke Hobsonwhose 1:29.63 lead-off stage puts him fourth all-time in the singles 200 free.

Behind Hobson were five other swimmers in the 1:31s, which, albeit surprisingly, preceded ASUs Grant housewho is the top seed of the 200 Free with his 1:30.67 Pac-12s, finished only sixth in 1:31.92.

Cals Gabriel Jett finished second in a best time of 1:31.35, his first time under 1:32.

In the flying splits, Marchand made history again by recording the fastest stage ever at 1:28.42, falling below the previous fastest time of 1:29.15 set by Dean Farris in 2019 (although it was a lead, no one has ever been faster than Farris at a relay takeover).

Destiny Lasco was also under 1:30 for Cal while three other swimmers were in the 1:30s.
