The first round of the 2023 NCAA Women’s Tournament has officially come to an end after a packed weekend of exciting games.
Among the teams that secured their tickets to the Round of 32 were No. 2 UConn and No. 5 Louisville, two teams that made the Final Four last season. The Huskies, led by Aaliyah Edwards, are attempting to win their first national championship since 2016. Edwards put on a championship-level performance in the Huskies’ first-round win over Vermont, recording 28 points on 13 of 15 shots, seven rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocks.
The Cardinals aren’t a No. 1 seed like they were last season, but they’re still a threat for a run, especially with Hailey Van Lith playing at the top of their game. Van Lith has put together a monster season, averaging 19.2 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. In the opening round against Drake, Van Lith lived up to her reputation by recording a team-high 26 points and two steals with a narrow win.
The only No. 1 in action Saturday was Indiana, who faced No. 16 Tennessee Tech in Bloomington, Indiana. Indiana won in predictable blowout fashion, with Sydney Parrish recording 19 points and eight rebounds. Indiana is hoping to keep the momentum going and get past the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament for the first time ever.
