In a way, heralding a new era in the sport, the US Figure Skating Championships will be broadcast live from San Jose, California on NBC Sports, USA Network and Peacock.

After last February’s Olympics, US figure skating saw its highest season-over-season sales in more than 20 years.

Nathan Chen and Vincent Zhuthe two best men from last season, do not compete this season and can be carried out overall. Alysa Liu and Mary Bell, the top two wives, retired. Just like the top ice dance couple Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue. Ashley Cain and Timothy LeDuclast year’s doubles champion, left the sport.

So for the first time since 1993, the US championship has had a reigning national champion in just one of the four disciplines.

Amidst all this, US skaters performed well in the Fall Grand Prix series and made their first podium appearances in all four disciplines at the December Grand Prix final. Note the absence of Russian skaters, banned from international events due to the war in Ukraine.

At the Nationals, skaters compete for spots on the team—three per event—for March’s World Championships in Japan.

Ilya Malinin, an 18-year-old from Virginia, is the headliner after becoming the first skater to land a quadruple axel in all four of his events this season. He ranks second in the world for best total points, a whopping 38.28 points ahead of the next American (Camden Pulkinen).

Jason Brown is the only men’s Olympian to compete at the Games for the first time since finishing sixth.

Isabeau Levito, 15 and a reigning junior world champion like Malinin, took silver at the Grand Prix final against the other top skaters in the world. She is walking ahead of the next American to the national team this season with a best score of 18.13 points. Amber Glenn. Brady Tennella 2018 Olympian returning from foot and ankle injuries is also in danger of claiming one of the women’s three spots at world championships.

ice dancer Madison Chock and Eve Bates are the lone defending champions and will probably be on the podium for a record 11th consecutive year.

Bates, who last year at 32 became the oldest US champion in an event in decades, has achieved 12 career podiums in the seniors with Chock and his former partner Emily Samuelson. It is believed that a 13th place finish in the top three would break the US record for a single discipline it currently shares with Michelle Kwan, Nathaniel Niles and Theresa Weld Blanchard.

in pairs, Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier Returning from missing nationals last year due to Frazier contracting COVID-19 the week of the event. Since then, they have achieved the best result by a US couple at the Olympic Games in 20 years, the first world title for a US couple in 43 years and the first ever Grand Prix Finals medal for a US couple.
