The 2023 World Baseball Classic is underway as 20 teams compete for the international title. Three teams have secured their tickets for the quarter-finals so far: Japan, Cuba and Italy. Team USA, on the other hand, started their tournament on Saturday evening with a win over Great Britain. The Americans are back on the field against Mexico on Sunday night.
All four five-team pools have started round-robin play, and Pool A ended Sunday in a five-team tie as all teams went 2-2. Cuba and Italy reach the quarterfinals thanks to a complicated mathematical equation (read more here).
The field of 20 teams is narrowed down to eight after the group match, with the top two teams in each group progressing to the quarter-finals. It’s a single-elimination bracket-style tournament from then on, with the championship game scheduled for Tuesday, March 21 in Miami.
