A bus crashed into the railroad tracks and apparently caught fire immediately. Some people are still missing.

A bus accident in Mestre, near Venice, northern Italy, left 21 dead and at least twelve injured on Tuesday night. Some people are still missing. A bus left an elevated road and fell onto the tracks next to the road. The railway line between Mestre and Venice was interrupted.

The bus, which ran on natural gas, reportedly caught fire immediately after the impact. The Fire Department’s extinguishing work remains ongoing.

“A terrible tragedy struck our community tonight. I immediately ordered a day of mourning to commemorate the many victims who were on the bus that crashed. We witnessed an apocalyptic scene, there are no words”, said the mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, on X.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani expressed their condolences to the victims and their families. “I am close to the families of the victims of the accident in Mestre. I would like to thank the police, firefighters and medical personnel for their immediate rescue efforts. “I express my solidarity with the city of Venice and the municipal administration,” said Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.
