Alissa Carton, 32, and Lara Norbury, 24, were forced to leave the apartment they were renting for $2,241 a month after discovering large mushrooms on their floor.
The cousins said the mushrooms were not yet visible when they moved into their home in the United Kingdom. However, the organism that began to grow behind her television quickly spread as the weeks passed.
“It was very small, but it grew quickly. At least in six or eight weeks it went from one to fifteen. And those are the ones we see,” Ms. Carton said.
Concerned about her health, the young woman contacted the real estate agent with whom the two roommates had done business.
“She told me it was probably because of the cold and humidity and that with a little cleaning it would all go away,” she said. It disgusted me. It's not my job to get rid of the mold. I pay $2,241 a month to live here.”
Over time, the smell in the apartment worsened so quickly that the roommates had to leave their home.
“It stinks. The accommodation is cold and damp. It smells bad and we have both suffered from headaches for the last few months,” Ms Carton revealed.
Bridgfords, the company that manages the property, denied being aware of the problem. She blames the cousins for not contacting her to notify her.
“We will of course correct the situation quickly. “We didn’t know the extent of the problem,” said a real estate company representative.
