Despite the Corona crisis, the city of Vienna can draw a positive balance from international company deals. In the previous year, it was possible to bring 225 foreign companies to the city. Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) announced on Tuesday that this was the second best result after 2019.

With the agreements, 442 million euros in investments flowed to Vienna and 2,673 new jobs were created.

Ludwig sees social security as a locational advantage of the city, which is also based on the good agreement of the social partners. “This resulted in good solutions, especially during the crisis”, says the municipal manager. He refers, for example, to the successful testing program “Alles gurgelt”.

By far the majority (41) of the newly established companies come from Germany, adds Financial Advisor Peter Hanke (SPÖ). Italy, the USA, Switzerland and Great Britain followed.

In terms of industry, many of the companies are located in the IT sector. The City Council stresses that it is even more important to ensure that there are enough specialists in this area through special training and support programmes.

An example of this is the US technology company Dynatrace, which is now listed on the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange). Last year, the globally active Boston-based company opened a new research and development laboratory in Vienna.

good key data

Despite the pandemic and the war, the city is currently in a very good economic position, according to Hanke. With 870,000 employees, an all-time high was set in February. The number of unemployed is now below the level before the start of the pandemic. And the growth forecast for 2022 (3.5 to 3.9%) gives reasons for confidence.
