At 23, Spike the Chihuahua became the world’s oldest dog in the Guinness World Records. Spike, who lives in Camden, Ohio, USA, received the title Thursday, April 19.

The 10yearold Chihuahua was found by his owner, Rita Kimball, in a grocery store parking lot in August 2009. In the Book of Records, Rita said that Spike showed signs of abuse.

For the tutor, it was as if Spike had chosen her and her family. “As we left the store and entered the parking lot, he followed us. We opened the car door to put our grandson in the car seat and Spike jumped in and sat in the seat,” Rita told Guinness. “It should be like this,” he said.

The family discovered that Spike would be the world’s oldest dog after hearing news of the death of the titled dog, Pebbles, who died at the age of 22. Vets who examined Spike estimate he was born between July and November 1999. Today the dog is almost blind and has limited hearing. Spike leads a quiet life surrounded by other animals on the family farm.
