According to initial findings, the smuggler had traveled from Romania to Slovenia. He tried to hide the 24 refugees he was transporting in the cargo area among pallets and liquor bottles.

A 48-year-old Turkish man was caught by police in Carinthia as a smuggler. According to the police, the man’s truck was checked on Tuesday night in the Karawanken tunnel when entering from Slovenia. Officers found 24 people from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan in the loading area, who were hiding among pallets and liquor bottles. The 48-year-old man was arrested and three Romanian license plates were stored in the driver’s cab.

According to initial findings, the smuggler had traveled from Romania to Slovenia, through the Karawanken tunnel he wanted to go to Austria and then to Italy. Most of the smuggled people were taken in by fraudulent recruitment agencies: when they traveled from their home countries to Romania via the UAE, they found that the paid placement service was not respected. After several periods of stay in Romania, they should finally have been transported to Italy. (APA)
