According to the reconstruction of Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood, the little one, along with his 7-year-old brother, had been entrusted to his 16-year-old sister by his parents, who went to the grocery store. It was the girl who called 911, the sheriff said again, describing the call as “heartbreaking”: “My little brother shot himself, there’s blood everywhere,” he told the emergency call center. It’s not clear how the child was able to find the gun on the bedside table, which the parents said was usually kept in a now-broken safe. In fact, there was a second gun on top of the fridge.
The father is a prison officer, but it’s not about service pistols. “This should never have happened,” added the sheriff, who has not filed any charges at the moment, recalling that Florida law requires a seven-day wait for an arrest in a child gun accident. Finally, the sheriff appealed to families who own guns to keep them locked: “If you have young children, even teenagers, you need to keep them locked.”
