30 dead in bus car crash in northern Nigeria Xinhua

ABUJA, July 22 (Xinhua) — At least 30 people were killed in a collision between two buses and a car on a busy road in northern Nigeria’s Kaduna state, a traffic police official said on Friday.

Thursday’s accident was caused by overtaking too quickly and dangerously, Abdulrahman Husaini Yakasai, deputy commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Kaduna, told Xinhua by phone.

A large fire broke out due to the impact and most of the victims died in the fire, he said.

“The injured were taken to the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital in Zaria by our men,” Yakasai said.

The official did not mention the number of injuries, many with severe burns, in the collision, which occurred on a road in Hawan Mai Mashi township, Makarfi governorate, Kaduna state.

Yakasai said police are working to obtain the manifest and passenger details to help identify the dead victims, many of whom were burned and unrecognizable.
