A bunch of grapes worth ten thousand euros, almost 380 euros per bunch. It’s about diversity Ruby Roman, the most expensive in the world, coming straight from Japan. More specifically, this forbidden fruit is only grown in Ishikawa Prefecture in the Chūbu region and set a record price in 2020 when a 900-gram bundle sold for $12,000 during an auction. But what justifies such an off-market price?

The characteristics of the Ruby Roman grape variety
The Ruby Roman grape is characterized by a distinctive red color and a surprising sweetness. As with the most exclusive products in the world, they are sold exclusively through auctions, and each bundle has to meet strict criteria. Each grape must weigh at least 30 grams and have a sugar content of 18%. Characteristics that are not easy to achieve, so much so that in 2011 only one screw met the standards.
cultivation
In Japanese culture, fruit is considered a luxury and gift item. In fact, Japanese supermarkets often don’t sell fruit if it’s flawed or not the right shape. The Ruby Roman grape harvest begins in July, just in time for one of Japan’s two major holidays, Ochugen. Grown only in Ishikawa Prefecture, the grapes are grown in greenhouses where farmers have more control over the growing process. Each cluster is monitored and cared for so that every cluster in a cluster looks completely identical to the big one. To make grapes the right size, grape thinner and simple scissors are used. The second factor they control is light. The last thing to check with Ruby Roman winemakers is the temperature. However, not all Ruby Roman grapes grown by farmers will meet the standard. That is why the offer is always limited. In 2020, only 25,000 Ruby Roman grapes were on offer. This is a small fraction of Japan’s annual grape production, which stood at about 163,000 tons in 2020. It wasn’t until 2008 that the first Ruby Roman grapes went on sale. Efforts to create them began in 1995 when local winemakers and the Ishikawa Agricultural Research Center teamed up to develop a new variety of large red grapes.
