An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale was recorded in Southern California in the USA. The quake struck about 12 miles south of Ranchos Palos Verdes.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), it is unlikely that any victims will be found. The likelihood of damage is also low, according to local authorities. About 17,621 people felt weak and shaking at the time of the earthquake.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, Japan was hit by a more powerful earthquake. Measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale, the earthquake shook the country's west coast and triggered a tsunami warning in several regions of the archipelago. In addition, it caused significant damage and left at least six people trapped.
Japanese public television NHK has updated the death toll to four so far. The information was provided by Ishikawa Prefecture, one of the hardest hit regions. Local police had previously confirmed the death of an elderly man.
There are also reports of injuries and collapses in five prefectures: Ishikawa, Niigata, Fukui, Toyama and Gifu. Unfortunately, there are reports of residents unable to escape and being left in their homes.
Tsunami warning
Japan lowered the tsunami warning level but stressed that residents of the region's coastal areas should not return to their homes as the scenario remains dangerous.
The earthquakes caused power outages in thousands of homes and disrupted air and train travel. This strength was the highest recorded in the region since 1885.
Utility Hokuriku Electric Power said more than 36,000 households remained without power in Ishikawa and Toyama prefectures. Telecommunications operators Softbank and KDDI also reported disruptions to telephone services.

Nuclear power plants
The Japanese government reported that no irregularities were found at nuclear power plants. According to the country's nuclear regulator, there is no risk of radioactivity leaking from the plants.
