First the warning, now the sentence.
That Journalist and TV presenter Maurizio Costanzo – accused serious defamation of the judge for the investigations of Rimini Vinicio Cantarin – it was sentenced to one year in prisonwith the Suspension of sentence against payment of 40,000 euros as compensation for the injured party.
The accused facts are from 2017. On an episode of Maurizio Costanzo’s show, the presenter had made comments – deemed offensive – about the judge’s work in relation to a precautionary measure taken against him Edson Tavares, the man who stabbed his ex-girlfriend Gessica Notaro with acid.
The coroner had ordered the ban on approaching women – with one caveat, though this applied to stalking episodes before the disfigurement – while the The public prosecutor had requested house arrest. «I want to congratulate the examining magistrate – said the journalist on TV –. I say to the CSM, the Supreme Judicial Council: compliments to this examining magistrate who has made such a decision.”
“I’m not commenting on the sentences, they speak for themselves. All I know is that I was defending a young woman who was scarred and lost an eye as a result.”, the journalist admits in an interview with Corriere della Sera. Costanzo’s defense lawyers argued that there was no defamatory intent and could now appeal.
