To give an idea of what happened, these figures would suffice: 44,000 spectators from all over Italy and 84 different countries of the world, over 11,000 tickets were sold abroad: 5,034 in Germany, 1,274 in Austria, 1,072 in Switzerland, 452 in France, 332 in UK, 330 in Slovenia, 291 in Croatia, 216 in Romania, 152 in Spain, 137 in Bulgaria, 120 in USA, 104 in Poland and others, in quantities less than 100 units, in 72 others countries of all continents. That was mainly the Rammstein concert. Expected, longed for, finally it has arrived.
As early as Friday evening, groups of fans were recognized in the city, moving through the streets and squares. Today, many of them have chosen to reach the stadium on rented bicycles and scooters. When it was 7:00 p.m., they were numerous in the streets leading to the stadium. And park in an orderly manner, or at least with a criterion. The efforts of the security forces are enormous, but concerts are known to be real parties. The people arriving in orderly fashion are always a beautiful sight, with that smile imprinted and in some cases really sophisticated and original looks. Lots of t-shirts that hark back to metal’s golden years. Many wear Metallica’s, but you can also see some from Pantera, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax. Black is the dominant colour, but the accessories make the difference. Earrings, glasses, but also many hats. In short, there is the atmosphere of the great concert.
The stage on which Rammstein perform is gigantic, it looks like a futuristic construction, but is reminiscent of the decadent industrial architecture of bygone times. Steel and fire are the most prominent elements framing the Six’s performance, which begins with frontman Till Linderman appearing as a pagan priest at the top of the tower. At first only his unmistakable voice can be heard, then a wall of sound rises that doesn’t let go until the last second. And indeed, the show is really powerful. And the public gets carried away, that’s what he wanted. It’s an odd mix of Rammstein, even a little clever if you let it. There’s the metal component but I’m not a metal band, there’s the industrial influence but even that doesn’t overwhelm the rest, there’s the typical elements of 80’s German pop and then there’s plenty of healthy ‘gothic’ “-Theatrics. Impeccable musicians, almost perfect. Chiristian Lorenz also brings in a bit of house with his synthesizers, very much in the style of the 90s, which doesn’t hurt. A mixture made even more explosive by the voice of their controversial leader. Let’s be specific on non-musical things.
“Du Hast”, “Sonne” or “Ohne Dich”, which are undoubtedly the band’s signature songs, enraptured the audience, but there was not a moment when 44,000 were not carried away by the energy that radiated from the stage. Illuminated in most cases by white or red light. Then there is the fire, which has its reason. And there’s plenty of that. Four towers in the middle of the lawn help the show by interacting with the lights and spreading more fire, making the air momentarily hotter.
The show is really perfect. Everything is designed and thought out in such a way that the show never goes under and does not lose attention. Even the performance from above on a small stage in the middle of the lawn is perfect, with the trick of inflatable boats that can take the six members of the band onto the stage using the human tide that crowds the Euganeo lawn. But everything is so perfect that it destroys any free interpretation or improvisation. That doesn’t make it a cold show, it would be impossible and not just because of the fire on stage. but it leaves room for spontaneity. It is becoming more and more common in the mega shows that have been going on for about twenty years, there are cases where it is more noticeable, others less so. Something is useless, it is lost. Finally, a thought for the many who occupied the upper parts of the stands. From an acoustic point of view, they were punished the most. Certainly not the fault of the band or the organization. But almost 35 years after Italia ’90, I think we can say with certainty that whoever designed this system in those years was certainly not only an enemy of football, but must also have been someone who didn’t even love music .
