This morning, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio broke down the San Francisco 49ers’ options with their veteran quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo. In the breakdown, Florio speculated that the current conundrum could force the Bay Area team to do the unthinkable — keep Garoppolo in 2022.
“They could even repeat his deal to turn some of the money he’s supposed to make into incentives based on playtime and/or performance,” Florio wrote. “Let him line up. If he’s better than Lance, let him play.”
However, Florio was not finished. He published a second article that looked at a different one of the three possible outcomes. Obviously, the chances of the 49ers landing the catch they hoped to acquire through a trade have dwindled greatly. While general manager John Lynch has stated the team is willing to keep Garoppolo and last year’s No. 3 Trey Lance on the squad should the need arise, it’s likely a last-ditch option.
Garoppolo is expected to count nearly $27 million towards the salary cap in 2022. So if Lance is the clear starter from now on, there’s not much point in keeping the experienced passer on the list at this price point.
Florio adds that Garoppolo’s recent shoulder surgery, which will keep him from shooting for any team until just before training camp, caught the 49ers by surprise.
Florio wrote, “Throw in the fact that Garoppolo was operated without consulting the 49ers, and it makes any team that would otherwise be interested in Garoppolo very suspicious.”
A source told Florio the shoulder surgery kept several potentially interested teams away. Now the list of teams needing quarterbacks has narrowed down to a point where a trade seems unlikely thanks to Garoppolo’s hefty salary and the fact that he’s not in good health.
“The most likely outcome, the source says, is that the 49ers will have to cut him,” Florio wrote. “With no salary guaranteed by Garoppolo until the eve of week one, the 49ers can wait. But you won’t get cap relief without trimming it. And because he’s in the last year of his contract, a cut would leave him with just $1.4 million in dead money — and it would instantly create more than $25 million in cap space.
With the initial expectation that things could be settled by the start of the new league year on March 16, it doesn’t look like the Garoppolo story is going away any time soon.

Florio: It’s not unthinkable that 49ers QB Trey Lance could “take the league by storm” in 2022
The media is still trying to predict what San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance will be like. No one – apart from the 49ers – has seen much of him in 2021. Last year’s No. 3 overall started just two games, replacing an injured Jimmy Garoppolo and adding a few isolated replays here and there. That was 178 snapshots last season. That’s hardly enough to make a definitive assessment of a player or accurately predict the young quarterback’s NFL future. People try anyway. Some, looking at the limited sample size, say Lance doesn’t look ready. They say that after a couple of games with some ups and downs, there’s no way he could be a regular. Then there was the off-season chatter that Lance wasn’t ready and that his development was
Florio: The QB issue could force the 49ers to do the unthinkable
The San Francisco 49ers went into the offseason feeling pretty good as they had opportunities to trade quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and acquire valuable capital in return. Then one of the craziest offseasons in recent memory happened. Aaron Rodgers stayed with the Green Bay Packers. Russell Wilson went to the Denver Broncos. There was the almost ridiculous blink-and-you-miss-it retirement of Tom Brady. Carson Wentz ended up with the Washington Commanders. The Houston Texans sent Deshaun Watson to the Cleveland Browns. Eventually, Matt Ryan found himself with the Indianapolis Colts. The sizable list of potential quarterback-needing teams quickly dwindled, and with it, Garoppolo’s commercial value. Then, of course, there was the surprising shoulder surgery
Jim Trotter says the 49ers aren’t into Deshaun Watson but outlines an unlikely scenario in which that changes
On Tuesday, Jordan Schultz shockingly reported that the San Francisco 49ers were among teams planning to meet Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, who is seeking a trade. The New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Brown and Atlanta Falcons appear to be in the mix to acquire the three-time Pro Bowler, who missed out in 2021. Several longtime reporters have shot down the 49ers’ involvement, including Matt Maiocco, Peter Schrager and Albert Breer. San Francisco did not meet with Watson. NFL Media’s Jim Trotter also chimed in on Wednesday, saying the 49ers are not entering the Watson Sweepstakes. However, the reporter added that there might be
49ers, Jets most interested in CB Stephon Gilmore, according to report
According to Connor Hughes and some of his colleagues at The Athletic, the San Francisco 49ers and New York Jets are probably the “most interested” in stephon Gilmore, the soon-to-be free agent’s cornerback. The Las Vegas Raiders are also believed to be interested in the two-time first-team All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowl defenseman. Improving cornerback position for the 49ers is expected to be a free agency priority. San Francisco may be waiting to see if they can acquire Gilmore for a small discount after making deals elsewhere by other top cornerbacks. The three teams in Stephen Gilmore are
