49ers News: Brock Purdy Postpones Surgery Due To Persistent Inflammation In Elbow

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero gave an update on Brock Purdy, who was scheduled for surgery this week. Purdy visited Dr. Keith Meister, who recommended that Purdy delay his surgery due to persistent inflammation in his elbow.

Both sides plan to meet again in early March. Per Pelissero“all signs continue to point to a UCL repair that would get Purdy ready for the 2023 season.”

dr Jeff Mueller, who we referred to earlier and who is a Physical Therapy Physician, had this to say about Purdy:

Corresponds to what we knew:

It’s a bad UCL tear that is still too infected to be operated on 3.5 weeks after the injury. Postponement to about 4.5-5 weeks. The severity of the injury makes sense given the number of consultations Purdy received in deciding between UCL Repair and Tommy John/Recon.

No good or bad news, just confirming what we knew about a bad tear. They’re optimistic about a repair, but actually they won’t know until they get there and do the surgery to see if the tape is fixable.

The good news is: The original surgery date of 22.02. brought Purdy to 6 months 19 days through week 1.

The move to early March puts him ~4.5-5 weeks post-injury and still 6.0+ months from DOS to week 1 (if he gets the fix, not TJ).

Despite other reports, this should not be taken as “good news” in the direction of a repair.

like dr Mueller notes above, Purdy could still technically be ready for the season, but that is if he doesn’t have Tommy John operate on him. Normally you don’t delay a repair.

We will provide updates as more details come in. I make an appointment to see Dr. to speak to Jeffrey Dugas of Andrews Sports Medicine. He is the doctor who performed a UCL repair on Nick Mullens and said he can speak to the effectiveness of the surgeries and potential recovery timelines.
